This blog post was written by Violet-Rose Pharoah. Violet-Rose is a student in the Community Leadership and Social Change Program at Capilano. When I signed up for the Community Service course (CLSC 103) I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew that the course would build on the other Community Leadership and Social Change diploma courses I had taken, yet I was intrigued by what the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom would be like. Hi folks. It's time for a quick Facebook privacy lesson!
If you'd like to be "Friends" with someone (like us) but don't want to share all your Facebook activity, here's how you do that:
First, become friends (with us).
Now click on "Friends" over at the left side of your page. Next, click on "+Create List" and give it a name, then hit "Enter". Now you can "Add Friends". Add us here. You can add other people or groups too, if you want to treat us all alike. This will give you have a list that you can control differently from your *regular friends* ;-)!
Now you're going to change your privacy settings. Click on the lock icon at the top right hand of any page. Choose "Privacy Checkup". Under "Future Posts", set it to "Custom" and choose not to share with the list you just created. You can choose to share a specific post later, in all different ways - but the automatic setting will be the one you set now. Now do the same for your "Profile", if you like. If you have time, check the list of "Apps" you've authorized to access your Facebook account and delete any you no longer use.
Now you have a more secure page AND you get to be friends (with us)!
Thanks for reading. Let us know if this was helpful!

What is your relationship to power? Power is a key issue for almost anyone working for a healthier, more just society. Often activists focus on changing political or other dominant power structures. But many of us have not taken the time to understand our own relationship to power.
