Deadline: July 16th, 9am. Don't miss it!
Everyone: meet Steph!!! Steph Wobensmith (they/them) recently joined our team as a Gender Affirming Care Navigator (are you as excited as we are?!🎉)
Steph is a trans-masculine genderq***r person living in unceded Algonquin territory. Originally from Philly, they are excited to use their professional background in client advising, system navigation, and peer support to make a positive impact in their role assisting people with accessing gender-affirming healthcare. Finding and creating spaces that foster q***r and trans communities have been crucial for them in their own journey as a q***r non-binary person, and they hope to bring that same energy to their work at Planned Parenthood Ottawa. As a drag King, their love of sequins, glitter beards, and inflatable “air guitar” solos allows them to feel pure q***r and trans joy every time they have the opportunity to take the stage.
Steph's role will focus on providing emotional and system navigation support for folks seeking gender-affirming care in Ottawa, ensuring they feel informed, supported, and advocated for. Stay tuned for more information about some of the new resources they will be offering!
Y'ALL, we are SO excited to welcome Mariam Dakdouki (she/her) to the Planned Parenthood Ottawa staff team! Mariam is our new Options Line Coordinator, a role focused on providing emotional and system navigation support to community members about their s*xual and reproductive health and ensuring everyone feels informed, supported, and advocated for. Mariam is fluent in English, French, Arabic, and Creole, and brings immense expertise in frontline support, policy development and health sciences. See a lil Q&A with Mariam below!
Q: Why are you passionate about s*xual and reproductive healthcare?
A: Because it is essential for the well-being and autonomy of all human beings! Access to comprehensive and compassionate care helps people make informed decisions about their bodies and lives, and fosters a healthier and happier community. As a survivor of gender based violence, I know first hand how PPO’s care can help to transform someone’s life and empower them to reclaim their sense of self.
Q: What are you most excited about in your new role at PPO?
A: I'm most excited about joining a team that is dedicated to delivering supportive, non-judgmental, patient-centered care. PPO's commitments to respect, understanding, and compassion align strongly with my own personal values. I’m looking forward to meeting more members of our community, and working to make sure that every one of them receives the best care and support possible!
Please join us in welcoming Mariam by dropping some encouragement in the comments!! 🎉
We were honoured to stand in solidarity with other reproductive rights activists on Parliament Hill today in opposition to the March for Life.
We will always work, march, and shout for the right for the bodily autonomy of every single person in our community. Abortion bans do not just restrict reproductive rights, they put pregnant people’s lives at risk.
Every day we fight against misinformation, coercion, stigma, and discrimination. Every day we work to support people without insurance who are faced with paying thousands out of pocket, or who are forced to travel for hours or out of province, to access abortion. Nobody should have to face such significant barriers to such important healthcare. Nobody should have to face discrimination and coercion within our healthcare system, or at home.
Together we can build strong families, strong communities, and strong movements. Together we have the power to create a world where everyone has access to equity-driven, culturally safe s*xual and reproductive healthcare.
Their message is clear—but so is ours.
Abortion saves lives!!!

🌍🌈 It's ! 🌈🌍
At PPO, we proudly champion the power of pronouns as an integral part of s*xual health education.
Through our educational programs and community outreach, we strive to ensure that every student and community member knows the power of pronoun recognition and respect. Our workshops help students understand pronouns and use affirming language for different bodies, challenge gender stereotypes and the idea that s*x is binary, build a trans-inclusive understanding of how a pregnancy happens, learn to use consent language in a q***r-affirming way, and learn skills on how to have conversations about communicating your trans or q***r identity.
Using correct pronouns is not just a polite gesture; it's a profound acknowledgment of someone's identity. Let’s make our community more affirming for everyone, one pronoun at a time. 🏳️🌈✨
For countless parents, the early stages of pregnancy are marked not only by hopeful anticipation but also by an unspoken apprehension. While societal norms may advise parents to keep the news under wraps for the first months, this caution can lead to isolation, especially during the heartbreak of a loss. Amid these complexities, we stand for open hearts, shared experiences, and collective healing.
Recognizing that the pain of losing an infant transcends words, we aim to offer a safe and nurturing environment for sharing. We understand the depth of this hurt and are committed to being a shoulder, an ear, and a source of information. In our supportive spaces, you're never alone.
Planned Parenthood Ottawa stands with all those who've experienced this profound grief. We recommend the following resources:
PAIL Network for bereavement support and community connection.
Butterfly Run Ottawa's Resources, which offers a list of vital supports in the Ottawa region.
Empowered Counselling, for specialized therapy centered on pregnancy and infant loss.
CHEO, for resources and support on grief and bereavement for children and families.
Additionally, our Options Line remains a direct line for anyone seeking guidance, resources, or a compassionate ear. Together, we navigate the intricate landscape of grief, ensuring no one walks this journey alone. Call out options line weekdays from 12-4 pm at 613-226-2334 ext. 101.
As we recognize the intersection of World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day, we want to shine a light on the intersection of housing, mental health and reproductive justice. Our perspective extends beyond individual causes; it delves into the profound interplay between safe, accessible, and affordable housing, mental health services, and reproductive justice.
🏠 Secure Housing: A Pillar of Well-Being
In Ottawa, a growing number of individuals face housing instability, impacting not only their physical circumstances but their mental health. Safe, accessible, and affordable housing is a fundamental right that nurtures both stability and physical and mental well-being. By advocating for housing initiatives, we cultivate an environment where everyone can thrive, and raise themselves, their families and their communities.
💡 Mental Health and Home
Within our community, mental health challenges are a systemic issue that affect many. Unstable housing conditions exacerbate these issues, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break. Prioritizing secure housing paves the way for emotional freedom, while accessible mental health services offer essential support to those navigating housing instability. By erasing stigma and ensuring access to care, we champion community well-being.
🌟 Reproductive Justice: Shaping Futures
Reproductive justice lies at the heart of our mission. In Ottawa, access to s*xual and reproductive healthcare and education is paramount, providing individuals with the resources to make informed decisions about their bodies, health, families, and lives. The connection between reproductive justice, secure housing, and mental health creates a comprehensive framework for a stronger, safer, more inclusive community.
By championing safe, accessible, and affordable housing, advocating for mental health services, and upholding reproductive justice, we can uplift our entire community.
From July to October, we've seen a surge in complex cases through our options line. These are not just numbers; they are individuals with stories and unique challenges - from navigating insurance or trying to access a safe abortion amidst intimate partner violence, to the overwhelming emotions tied to youth pregnancy and the sometimes distressing side effects of birth control.
Every call we receive reminds us of the pressing need for accurate evidence-based information, compassionate support, and guidance. Our commitment to being there for every caller is unwavering, but we need your help to ensure we can keep wait times down.
By donating, you directly empower our mission, ensuring that every voice on the other end of the line finds solace and solutions. Your generosity helps us in our quest to be the resource people need during their most challenging moments.
Consider donating at ppottawa.ca/donate. No amount is too small. Together, let's ensure everyone knows they are not alone in their journey. 📞❤️
Today, we observe the , reflecting on a significant part of Canada's history. We're located on what is traditionally known as the Algonquin territories, so called Ottawa. To show our respect and commitment today our staff are actively participating in events, walks, and speeches to remember and support those deeply affected by the trauma of ongoing colonization and the residential school system.
We want to emphasize the findings and recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. It's crucial to understand that the health challenges Indigenous folks face today are deeply intertwined with both historical and ongoing policies, including the likes of residential schools, the foster care system, and land displacement.
At Planned Parenthood Ottawa, we're continuously working to address these healthcare disparities. We aim to offer services that are not only accessible but also respectful, culturally competent, and aligned with anti-colonial and anti-oppressive principles.
We encourage everyone to stand in unity with Indigenous communities today and every subsequent day. Here are a few local events happening around the city you can attend:
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation will host a series of virtual lunch and learn sessions throughout the week.
Visitors at the Canadian Museum of History will be invited to join the conversation on truth and reconciliation on Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1.
Several events will be held in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the Beechwood Cemetery. On Saturday, September 30, a short film will be screened at the Beechwod National Memorial Centre’s Sacred Space. Following the screening, visitors can participate in a guided Reconciliation Tour and attend the unveiling of the Children’s Sacred Forest at 2 pm.
Ottawa Public Library staff have also put together book and film lists that you can read, watch and learn from throughout the year.
🌍 Every corner of our world sees local activists, driven by determination, fighting to ensure safe abortion and abortion access for everyone, regardless of gender, age, or socio-economic status.
The international movement's strength is visible in many recent victories: from decriminalization of abortion care in countries like Argentina, India, and Ireland to the establishment of safe access buffer zones in parts of the UK. We've also seen the powerful stand of young leaders, bringing innovative advocacy and fresh perspectives to the front lines.
‼️ However, as we see a concerning rise in divisive and harmful anti-abortion and anti-2SLGBTQIA+ rhetoric on our own doorstep, it's a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant and united in the global fight to ensure safe and accessible abortion for all.
At Planned Parenthood Ottawa, we continue to contribute to this mission by providing comprehensive s*xual and reproductive health education, services, and advocacy right here in our community.
This , we stand in solidarity with the global community in calling for:
🌍Global decriminalization of abortion.
↔️Expansion of safe abortion access.
💪🏼Protection and empowerment of abortion care providers.
📚Implementation of comprehensive s*xuality education.
🏳️⚧️Inclusivity in abortion care for all gender-diverse individuals.
Let's amplify the stories of resilience, solidarity, and victory this International Safe Abortion Day! Share your story, join a local event, or support organizations like PPO, leading this crucial charge!
✊ We rise, evolve, and adapt, proving that each challenge only makes our commitment stronger.
As we mark Planned Parenthood Ottawa stands at the forefront, working to create a world where everyone has access to contraception education and options.
💚Accessibility First: by distributing safer s*x supplies we’re ensuring that protection isn’t a privilege but a right.
💚Contraception Counseling: With so many contraceptive choices available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Our free counselling sessions are tailored to provide clear, compassionate and evidence-based guidance and information.
💚Breaking Down Barriers: by collaborating with pharmacies, providers and other medical professionals, we’re removing the red tape around billing and insurance, making birth control more accessible and affordable.
💚Education is Key: Our workshops are more than just talk. They provide evidence-based information that improves confidence and skill-building around types of birth control, communication, pregnancy, consent, and s*xual health. Resources like our comprehensive birth control booklet and interactive birth control website can help anyone get the information they are looking for.
💚Preventing Reproductive Coercion: We're shedding light on harmful reproductive coercion behaviours, like destroying, hiding, or physically removing birth control methods. By raising awareness and educating the community, we aim to help individuals recognize, prevent, and stand against coercive behaviour and focus on building and practicing reproductive autonomy.
📣Your Voice Can Amplify Change!
We urge you to join us in this fight. Let's call on our local and provincial leaders and champion the cause for free and accessible contraception across Canada. Write to your MP and call for free birth control across Canada. Find a link to the Project Empowher letter template in our bio and send yours in solidarity today.
