Today is the 100th year anniversary of Mabel Hubbard Bell's death.

Wife, mother, businesswoman, trailblazer, and humanitarian are only a few of many wonderful words that can be used to describe Mabel Hubbard Bell.

Mabel dedicated countless hours toward the betterment of society, and the communities around her, specifically the village of Baddeck. Her work extended across many scopes as she founded the Young Ladies of Baddeck Club, the first Montessori school in the country, and the Parents Association of Baddeck, which led to the founding of a national Home and School Federation.

These are only a few of Mabel’s many accomplishments. At Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, we’re proud to highlight the legacy left behind by Mabel Hubbard Bell -- her impact on the community of Baddeck extends across generations and continues to be felt today.

It is Women's History Month! Mabel Hubbard (1857-1923) was born into a rich, well-connected Massachusetts family. Her life and destiny were profoundly affected by deafness caused by scarlet fever at age five. She married teacher of speech and the deaf Alexander Graham Bell in 1877; the couple's touching and lively letters bear witness to a lifetime of loving companionship. It was on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where much of Bell’s work after the telephone was accomplished, that Mabel left her own legacy. When his work with large kites led to thoughts of powered flight, she encouraged him and four young collaborators to set up a formal organization and financed the group with $35,000 of her own money, thus becoming the North American aviation industry’s first backer.

Always involved in community life, Mabel established one of the first Canadian women's clubs, "to stimulate knowledge and promote sociability" and raised money and rallied support for a local library on Cape Breton Island.

One hundred years ago today, Alexander Graham Bell died at home in Baddeck, surrounded by his family, at the age of 75.

To honour his life, Mabel Bell organized a procession, insisting everyone wear light colours, and curated a program of AGB's favourite songs, poetry, and hymns.

"Under a wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die
And I laid me down with a will."
- Robert Louis Stevenson's "Requiem"

He is buried at Beinn Bhreagh, overlooking the Bras d'Or, where so many of his dreams and experiments took flight.

Tonight, at the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, we open our third season of The Bells of Baddeck, commemorating the legacy and life of Alexander Graham Bell. We are honoured to be a part of this celebration and bring this story to life!

Limited tickets still remain for tonight's opening, and are on sale for the remainder of our run - August 2nd through to August 20th.
