“Pulling Together", a limited edition print available in paper and canvas by NL artist Ted Stuckless. This artwork is dedicated to those families who participated in the resettlement or “centralization” program beginning in 1954 in Newfoundland. While some families floated their homes on water, many waited until winter to pull their house across ice to their new communities.

On July 1, 1916, the Newfoundland Regiment suffered immense loss on the battlefield of Beaumont-Hamel in France during the Battle of the Somme. The story of the Newfoundland Regiment in WWI is a dramatic one, long and filled with heroic victories. It came to an end on this day in 1916.

801 fighting Newfoundlanders left the trenches and tried to smash through the German lines. They encountered significant machine gun fire and only 68 returned to answer roll call the next morning. An entire generation was wiped out in minutes. Today, we remember their supreme sacrifice, bravery, and valour.

To Greener Pastures, a print by NL artist Ted Stuckless, measures 15 x 23.5 unframed ($50); 24 x 32.5 framed ($199).

In the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, there were efforts to close down many remote outport communities in Newfoundland, which the government considered non-viable, and move people to bigger communities which had more services and which would provide people with “more opportunities”.

The provincial government provided small amounts of money to encourage people to leave their tiny, remote settlements.

A common scene in areas around the province was to see houses lifted from their foundations and moved across the sea to their new locations in the larger communities. This print is dedicated to their memory.
