Squeezing in a photoshoot of our Eco Silk Scarves and newly arrived Cambodia Bombshell Casing Jewelry this evening. Spanish Banks - one of my most favourite places in the world to hold a shoot. is our awesome photographer as always. Love working with her. daughter Sophie so kind to volunteer her time once again. And awesome friend Janet also volunteering to share her professional modelling talent with us. That was a fun and efficient shoot. Photos coming soon. Oh and I threw in a few photos of the beautiful scenery this evening❤️

Shero - that is what Grand Chief Cathy Merrick was. She was a source of wisdom and unwavering commitment to her people. She passed suddenly today and the world lost a great woman and leader.

I love gardening. I enjoy to find and creat new recipes incorporating the food that I grow❤️ This week I am harvesting my juicy plump Patty Pan Squash and making up a bunch of Yukon Gold Potato and Squash Tortes. This are in the foreground. I keep my onions in our Marigold Beehive shaped baskets you see in the background. Fruit kept in our one of a kind, handcrafted Sari Remnant Baskets. I love storing my veg in beautiful Marigold baskets. ❤️

Poppy envy😊. Every year a neighbour a block up and over from me has a field of poppies growing and spreading along half a city block on the side of her home. And every year I admire it. This year my friend Barb gave me a handful of seeds from her late father’s garden - those giant California Poppies. Dream come true. Hope they take in my garden and spread like my neighbours. Flower love❤️

Visiting the Historic Centro at Mexico City is a must. The historic center of Mexico City (Spanish: Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México), also known as the Centro or Centro Histórico, is the central neighborhood in Mexico City. The Zocalo is the largest plaza in Latin America. It can hold up to nearly 100,000 people.

Churrería El Moro is a restaurant serving churros and hot chocolate in Mexico City. The original 1935 location is on Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas near the Metro San Juan de Letrán in the Historic center of Mexico City. This is the location we visited. Like a step back in time. Old school❤️. The menu is simple—churros, eight types of hot chocolate, and the consuelo, an ice-cream sandwich with coiled churros on each end. We had coffees, churros and the ice cream sandwich which had homemade ice cream. No visit to Mexico City is complete without tasting these delectable sweet treats.

Museum of Anthropology Mexico City is spacious and so well done. National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropologia) contains the world’s largest collection of ancient Mexican art and also has ethnographic exhibits about Mexico’s present-day indigenous groups. I could have spent many more hours there. Interesting exhibits that are well lite and laid out. Well done and worth the trek!

While in Mexico City this week, I have been seeking out businesses that embrace fair trade and found this nice shop called Fabrica Social. The last photo is of a card on which they explain the distribution of cost: Every $100 pesos of your purchase
at Fábrica Social goes here - and then then the breakdown. There is a significant cooperative presence especially in the handicraft sector and particularly focusing on woman. ❤️

Currently exploring Mexico City and while I wanted to travel light, I still wanted to look nice for restaurant and museum entrances. Dresses are always great for the heat but most important, honourable mention goes to the Eco Silk Marigold Collective scarves made by the very first coop we partnered 12 years ago. I’m wearing the “Hanoi” style - a burnt orange silk and cotton blend (called Ginger on our webstore). These scarves are perfect for travel as they dress an outfit up right away and take little to no space up in your bag. ❤️

Daughter Sophie and I are in Mexico City enjoying culture, art and food. We joined a Walking Tour exploring the area we are staying - Roma Norte. Within a few blocks I saw a number of signs and graffiti and murals all about Save the Planet. There is green everywhere in this very walkable area of the city. I think people everywhere understand how important our green spaces are and efforts toward promoting saving the planet is. While as citizens we dont make policy - we can definitely drive the motivation by making art and speaking up and voting for elected officials who do have that power. Go Mexico Green!

Hey Team The Bee's Knees- my dear friend Dianne Whelan has a screening of her film500 Days in the Wild at St Johns at dates below. It’s a personal story of a woman’s journey but also a love letter to Canads and its diverse beauty of nature. Right up your alley. Go see it! And share it around please. Many thanks. Let me know how you liked it. 🙏🙌

Well it took a few weeks but I’m set up now in my home office. Thanks to help from Ford and Sophie. My angels❤️

A short word about our Jute Tote bag program that we are so proud of - because of the styling, quality and group we work with. This group is long established and located in rural Northern Bangladesh. They create our beautiful market and picnic totes as well as our Kantha Aprons. Everything handcrafted to perfection.

Women artisans play a significant and important role in the day-to-day operations as well as directly participating in business decisions. Women are able to work at the production studio as well as being able to work from home where they can care for children and elders - and work at the same time. I really relate to this because it is how I have worked for a lot of my career - for exactly the same reason.

Mother’s Day is coming up and if you are looking for a functional, quality and beautiful gift to give - consider one of these totes. We appreciate your support at our online store❤️

One of the side benefits of owning a business is all of the interesting people you meet. Retail customers at markets and my previous shop and wholesale customers. Lorna who is the owner of Bodacious Lifestyles Boutique was one of my very first wholesale customers - that was 13 years ago! She has become a valued friend and long standing customer. In the face of the work and risk owning a small business - friendships like this ease the way. Grateful for her friendship and her continuous patronage. That was a nice cup of chai and a great visit!

Well that’s a wrap! Our last box moved out today. Bittersweet as it was a lovely space but it’s time to move on. Our retail studio was built and created by a gathering of awesome friends and family who generously gave their time. We had 3 good years in a bricks and mortar location but times are a changing and we are too. We continue to sell online to be sure to check us out there. Most important: sign up for our newsletter and stay in touch. We update once or twice a month through our newsletter and let you know if events we are participating in and markets etc. Special thanks to my daughter Sophie and her wonderful partner Ford, for all of their help building and then Decommissioning that store. Their willingness, positive attitude and elbow grease was a huge part of making it all happen on both ends. I am eternally gratful❤️

Hand woven in Bangladesh, the “Bee Hive” storage or decorative basket is made from Water Hyacinth. This aquatic plant is found almost everywhere in Bangladesh. Not is considered highly problematic because it grows fast and it blocks the waterways. The pulp of this plant is used to make paper and the dry stems to weave baskets. A genuine Fair Trade ecological product. Available instore but can also calculate shipping and advise. 11 1/2” tall and 6 1/2” top opening diameter. Enough room to place your hand right in. I store onions, garlic and ginger root in mine. Practical and looks so stylish in the kitchen. $48 regular price - 20% off for the month of February - $38.40.
