Plant diversity is the key to a healthy gut. 😊

Hi Friends! I enjoyed a 2 week social media vacation, the longest break I’ve taken in years. It was refreshing, and honestly -- overdue.

Now I’M BACK with a 🔥HOT🔥 lil’ PRO TIP for y’all:

70% of the immune system resides in the GUT.

Yup. You read that right.

70%!!!

If you pulled out your microscope and zoomed in, you’d see a single layer of cells that separates the immune system from 38 trillion gut microbes. This layer of cells is like a screen door between a party in your home and a party outside.🎉 The microbes and immune system are deeply intertwined.

The immune system requires a delicate balance. You want it fired up to eliminate invading pathogens, but without taking it too far and invoking the nuclear option -- systemic inflammatory response. (That’s what we see happen in people with severe COVID.) You ALSO need to maintain tolerance to avoid autoimmunity and allergic reactions. So… how do we keep the immune system just right?

Our gut microbes. One way our gut microbes shape our immune system is through short chain fatty acids like butyrate. These guys do the tough work of fixing the lining of the colon, reversing the damage of dysbiosis. SCFAs reduce inflammatory signals like NF-kB, IFN-gamma, and TNF-alpha. They even communicate directly to the immune system through T regulatory cells! SCFAs can promote both immune responses AND immune tolerance. So basically they’re like Bob the Builder and his entire team— “Can we fix it? YES WE CAN!” 🙌 🙌 🙌

The immune system then conjures Samuel L. Jackson: “I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.”🎯

What it boils down to is this: When we take care of our gut microbes, they take care of our immune system. 🙌 When we don’t, immune dysregulation may ensue. 👎

We NEED a healthy immune system.
And to get there, we NEED a healthy gut.
And to get both, we need SCFAs from fiber.
They’re better than a Royale with Cheese.
