Dear friends,

Do you want to make some changes in March? Do you want to start your day with a clear mind and happy mood?

The Wildrose Sangha’s morning online practice probably can help you to achieve this.

WHAT IT IS
Morning practice is 30 minutes long. The session begins with audio muted as we listen or sing in our own space the morning chant. We then move directly into a silent sit. Three bells bring us back to the room and to the active listening of a poem, prayer or short reading from the facilitator.

HOW TO JOIN
Enrol through our list-serve on our website to get the zoom link.

We will have an outdoor walking meditation at the beautiful Confederation Park in NW Calgary from 12 noon to1:00ish pm MST, 24/2/2024 Saturday. Everyone is welcome to join (no registration is required). Please bring shoes and clothing appropriate to the weather.
**We will meet at the Rosemont Community Association parking lot, adjacent to the park. We'll all form a group so it shouldn't be too hard to spot the sangha.

We will also have an online practice of the 14 Mindfulness Trainings, specifically #5: Compassionate, Healthy Living at 9 am on Saturday, 24/2/2024. For this 1-hour session, we will sit in meditation, read the training, and reflect through writing/drawing and group sharing.

Dear Respected Thay and Noble Sangha,

Please join us online tonight for a special Monday practice as we gather to commemorate the transition of Thich Nhat Hanh to an ancestor.

As you may have seen, the official ceremony to mark Thay, our dear teacher, as an ancestor in his root lineage and in the Plum Village sangha took place last night in Hue, Vietnam.

Tonight, through singing, meditation, readings and group sharings we will reflect on how we are a continuation of Thay—and many ancestors, blood, land, spiritual.

HOW TO JOIN
Join our list-serve through our following website

The Sound of the Rising Tide 28/01/2024

The Wildrose Sangha gathered yesterday to honour Thầy's Transition to Ancestor.

We are the lay disciples and children of Thầy!

We hear Thầy from his poem: A Teacher Looking for His Disciple. https://www.parallax.org/mindfulnessbell/article/poem-a-teacher-looking-for-his-disciple/

We want Thầy to hear us from the song too: The Sound of the Rising Tide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CSkKrNYb54

Thầy, we vow to live mindfully, so we are still meeting you every minute and every second in our mindful breathing and mindful walking as you shared in many Dharma Talks.

"People live as if they are dead. But if they know how to breathe mindfully and walk mindfully, they are resurrected. Resurrection is a practice. If Jesus Christ could do it, then we human beings like him can also do it. Jesus is the son of God and also the son of men and a child of the Earth. We are also the sons and daughters of men and children of God. We can always come back to life by practicing awakening, mindfulness.

From a state of forgetfulness you pass into a state of mindfulness in just a few seconds by making a mindful step or taking one mindful in-breath. Then the miracle of resurrection happens. Resurrection is not a belief or a dogma; it is a practice. Learning how to breathe mindfully, walk mindfully, eat mindfully, drive mindfully; we become awakened people, alive people, and we have the chance to live deeply every moment that is given us in our daily life. We do not live as dead people anymore."

Oneness

The disciples of Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay) often create songs out of his beautiful poetry. Here is a new song based on Thay's poem Oneness, sung by Sister Chanh Niem, with guitar by Sister Luc Nghiem and cello by Brother Phap Linh. A touching moment during Thay's Memorial Week.

“This Christmas, if you buy and bring home a Christmas tree to decorate, remember that your ‘true home’ is not found outside yourself, but it is right in your own heart. We do not need to bring home anything for us to feel fulfilled. We have everything we need right in our heart. We do not need to practice for many years or to travel far to arrive at our true home. If we know how to generate the energy of mindfulness and concentration, then with each breath, with each step, we arrive at our true home. Our true home is not a place far removed from us in space and time. It is not something that we can buy. Our true home is present right in the here and now; if only we know how to return and to be truly present to it.

The other day, Thay was reflecting on what message to send to his friends and students abroad so that they can practice, so that they can be like Jesus or be like the Buddha. Thay then wrote this calligraphy: ‘There is no way home, Home is the way.’

The means and the ends are not two separate things. There is no way to return to our home. Our home is the way. Once we take a step on that path home, we are home right in that moment. This is true to the practice of Plum Village. There is no way to happiness, Happiness is the way. Recently, Thay also shared in his Dharma talk that, ‘There is no way to nirvana, Nirvana is the way.’ Every breath and every step has the capacity to bring us right back to our true home, right in the here and now. This is the fundamental practice of Plum Village. This is the message that Thay wants to send to his friends and students during this Christmas season. If you want to send a holiday greeting to your friends and loved ones, you can also send this message. If you can practice it truly, then sending it will have a deep meaning; but if you do not practice it, then the message will have little substance.

Let us all enjoy our practice of coming home this holiday season. Let us truly be at home within, and so become a home for our loved ones and all our friends.”

A gatha on 'Waking Up' by Thich Nhat Hanh

Gathas are short verses that we can recite during daily activities to help us return to the present moment and dwell in mindfulness. Using a gatha doesn’t require any special knowledge or religious practice. Some people like to memorize a favorite verse that they enjoy coming back to again and again. Others like to write the verse down in a place they are likely to see it often. Further, those who are inspired to do so are invited to create their own gathas to support their practice in specific situations.
