Managing surface water on your property can reduce the likelihood of basement leaks and make for a better gardening experience.
The minimum recommended gradient of the surface adjacent to your home’s foundation is 6 inches for the first 10 feet. That is a 5% incline. Depending on soil conditions, you may want to increase that slope to be more effective. Rocky/sandy soil drains more readily than clay-based soils. Watch for pooling and make adjustments as needed.
Ideally, garden beds will be slightly elevated above the surrounding soil grade. This will prevent water from pooling in the garden beds and the over-watering of your plants. There are also many plans for raised or enclosed garden beds, and kits at building supply stores for assembling raised beds. This is especially helpful for people that may have mobility issues.
Make sure provisions for drainage are present to prevent oversaturation of those garden beds.

If your home’s roof experiences some shade in the summer, those shaded areas may encounter some algae, lichen, or moss growth. Apart from being unsightly, these growths can, over time, damage the surface of your roof shingles and shorten their useful service life.
If you choose to remove the growth, be gentle. Excessive abrasion will damage the stone grit on your asphalt shingles. That grit protects your shingles from the damaging UV rays of the sun. While some shingles are being produced with a zinc component in the stone grit to discourage plant growth on your shingles, that protection may wane over time.
A more sure-fired way to combat such growth is the installation of zinc flashing just below the roof’s ridge cap. When rain washes over the exposed surface of the
zinc flashing and runs down the shingles, it will deposit enough zinc to discourage algae, lichen, and moss growth.

If you live in a part of Canada that does not have abundant natural gas distribution, you may be using furnace oil to heat your home. If that is the case, you will have an oil tank somewhere on your property, inside or adjacent to your home. Here are some things of which you should be mindful.
Firstly, the insurance industry has heavily influenced the installation standards for oil tanks. As costs of claims related to leaks have risen, the standards have improved considerably. But, if you have and older installation, it probably does not meet the most recent standard. Check with your insurance company to determine if you have coverage for oil leaks and what you can do to continue protection.
Secondly, inspect your oil tank annually. If the metal tank is located at the exterior of your home, it will be more vulnerable to corrosion and leakage. In cold weather, moisture inside the tank will condense and, water being heavier than oil, it will sink to the bottom of the tank and begin the corrosion process. If you observe visible corrosion at the bottom of the tank, do not touch it; that rust may be the only thing preventing a leak. Instead, contact your fuel supplier for an inspection.
Oil leaks are serious and expensive to mitigate. Monitor your tank regularly.
