We're excited to announce that our fresh, delicious carrots will be available in:

🛒 Red Deer: Tomorrow evening(May 17th)
🛒 Lethbridge: First thing Saturday(May 18th)

But hold your horses (and maybe don't feed them all to your pony😉); we only have limited carrots available, and demand will be VERY high!

We're harvesting our entire greenhouse crop, so we will be sold out for a few weeks until the field carrots kick in. 🌱

Rest assured, we are working diligently on a solution to harvest more greenhouse carrots in the future to ensure a greater supply during the shoulder season!

At Ruben’s Veggies, sustainable growing is a crucial feature of our work! We grow primarily greenhouse-grown food, an environmental method of growing that allows for the more direct use of resources. Here are some of our sustainability practices:

Irrigation Practices: Our greenhouses contain re-capture technology to obtain unused water and fertilizer. Any water and fertilizer not used by the plant is leached out of grow bags and captured using irrigation plumbing. We can then recycle this water and fertilizer. An open field may use 100-300 liters to produce 1kg of tomatoes, while a greenhouse like ours uses only 15 liters of water to produce 1kg of tomatoes.

Integrate Pest Management (IPM): Ruben’s is dedicated to a biological first approach to pest management. This means we introduce natural enemies to fight against greenhouse pests. Even in the root zone, we add beneficial mycorrhizae to prevent root diseases such as botrytis, pythium, and fusarium. There is a clear advantage to this program: we can limit our pesticide use to a minimal if any, use. In Holland, which extensively uses IPM, studies have shown that 75% of its tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers have no pesticide residues. In comparison to other countries, it has been found that 70% of fresh produce has pesticide residues.

Carbon Capture: Our greenhouses operate on a boiler heating system. During the day, we capture the fumes from the boiler to increase plant productivity. Burning gas for heat produces carbon dioxide(CO2); we provide this CO2 to the plants, which in turn produces oxygen. Advanced greenhouses can run even more efficiently! Greenhouses can be built with energy screens that retain heat in the structure and reduce heat loss through polycarbonate or glass coverings. A double screen in a greenhouse can save the farmer up to 50% of their energy bill. Modern greenhouses built with grow lights are installing a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit. The CHP will create electricity for the lights, which produces heat, which is then used to heat the greenhouse. Additionally, CO2 will also be a byproduct, which is then used for plant production.

The Local Advantage: Since we ship our product locally and directly to the consumer, we use minimal fuel. In addition, since our produce is harvested, packaged, and delivered in 24 hours, there is minimal cooler use. It has been estimated that a whopping 36% of all carbon emissions in the food system are due to transportation.
Waste reduction: Ruben’s is all about reducing waste! In the supply chain, 24% of food is lost on the farm. Usually, this is rejected produce or Canada No. 2 grade product that has low value. We package our No. 2 products in bulk(such as the tomato boxes or those giant bags of peppers). Another 10% of produce is wasted at the grocery store due to over-ordering. Grocery stores focus on consumer psychology in which an appearance of plenty increases long-term sales, even though it creates more waste. At Ruben’s, we focus on predicting quantities that will be purchased; that’s why we may sometimes sell out. Lastly, 14% of food waste is contributed to the consumer, and nearly half of that food waste is unavoidable. Since our veggies are so fresh, customers have a longer opportunity to finish them before they spoil.

Sustainable Packaging: Not only do we have sustainable practices for our greenhouses, but we also have sustainable practices for our sales methods! Produce packed with the Ruben’s Veggies logo(which is most of it) is 100% oxo-biodegradable. Oxo-biodegradable plastics contain metal salts that break down in an open environment. This shortens the degradation from centuries to months or a couple of years. Not to be mistaken for oxo-degradable, which uses additives but still forms microplastics.

Greens are now being harvested, and you can expect to see lettuce mix, living lettuce, kale, and Swiss chard readily available in the next few weeks. Herbs and Carrots will be popping up towards the end of the month! 🥬🌿🥕🌟

What made you want to be a farmer?
I’ve always been science driven and passionate about agriculture. Growing up my parents were always inspiration to be a woman in the farm-business. I was very fortunate that my family allowed me the opportunity to have a leadership position on my family farm.

What advice would you give to young women wanting to enter the agriculture field?
Farming is a super gratifying experience to be in. If you’re a woman that is driven by science, agriculture is a great industry to be involved with. From growing produce, to raising cattle, to marketing, and technology development: the opportunities in agriculture are endless. Intimidation is limiting and there is nothing inherently masculine about farming (it’s called mother-nature y’all). You just have to be a motivated and inspired person to succeed.

What challenges do women face in farming?
There are a variety of unique challenges for female farmers. There is a lack of representation of female farmers in leadership positions. The risk is also greater as women in traditionally masculine leadership roles are judged more harshly than men for mistakes made. Furthermore, more female farmers than their male counterparts are working off-farm while juggling child care. However, the incentive is greatly worth the challenges in my opinion. Being involved in agriculture is an amazingly dynamic and rewarding industry. My hope is that more farms involve women and provide the opportunity to be a leader in farming and recognize them for their contributions.
