MY FIRST HARMONICA was a gift from a Canadian soldier based in Lahr, Germany. I was backpacking Europe in 1981/82 and found some work at the army base as a short order cook. It wasn’t long before my travelling partner and I found ‘our people’ there. Jerry L Sollows was one of them. When my friend and I were leaving Germany to travel south to the Mediterranean and North Africa, he gave me the harmonica you see in the photo. I was always picking it up and foolin’ around on it during our jams. He said to me as he put it in my hands, “You better know how to play that thing when you come back up north!” The well-worn, long since retired harmonica resides on my piano next to my coveted photo with Koko Taylor.
Hope I didn’t disappoint you Jerry, but I think I’ve finally figured out how to play that tin biscuit!

April 30th, International Jazz Day carries a broad message of coming together, globally. Jazz is not just a style of music, it is all of that and more. A welcoming and decades old movement about unity, and dissolution of invisible boundaries. An invitation to embrace variety, spontaneity, and the human condition. Music - the universal language.
