String art or string heart rather, 😉 piece done by our friend and talented local artist with our beautiful Humble Grey Barn Boards 😍
A recent change of heart motivated me to remain open until further notice.
So to help those shopping for reclaimed wood, I've put together three important tips to follow.

Add warmth and elegance to your kitchen by incorporating reclaimed wood.

Sometimes less is more. A well designed space using the right amount of barn wood will forever add warmth and timeless ambiance to your modern home or business.
We supplied this beautiful reclaimed range hood for customers in Chelsea Quebec 🇨🇦
Early on my Humble Barn journey, I set out to one day offer my own line of reclaimed wood flooring. I was inspired by who mastered the art of creating gorgeous reclaimed wood floors! It took me 7 years to get there but it was worth the wait!
We installed this one for my dad before he past away. It was one of his dying wishes ♥️ He loved reclaimed wood so much! He even hung some boards up on the wall around the house. Not part of an accent wall or anything like that, as single art pieces.

This was just sent to me. It's always nice to receive positive feedback from my customers 🥰
Check out this beautiful Sun Burst board!!
Humble Barn's official name for this gorgeous barn board colour.
And check out the rust on this perfectly weathered board, isn't that amazing? 🤩
Sun burst coloured boards are found on only about 10% of barns. There's an actual science behind why that is. It took me a few years to figure out why 🤔
More on that later..
Stay tuned!! 📺
A bit like sculpting, finishing fireplace mantels is a work of art. At least that's how it feels to me. There's something very meditative about the whole process and the outcome is often incredible. I buffed the soft grain layers down on this gorgeous pine beam giving it an aged but smooth look. Subtle yet absolutely mesmerizing 😍🤩
What finish did I use? A blow torch to char the wood "Shou Sugi Ban" style 🔥 then applied a minwax finish then buffed it with a cloth buffing wheel.
I think I might start finishing a few here and there. I just really enjoy doing it.
Would you want a Humble Barn mantel finished by Matt?
Whenever I stood in front of a barn looking up at big weathered pine barn boards like these, I knew it was going to be a good day!
Although the lighter grey boards are more sought after, the darker grey and sun burst boards are my favorites!
If you look closely, you can still spot the circular saw marks on some of the boards. This barn was around 140 years old and back then around the 1880s, boards were sawn with a massive circular saw.
Humble beginning. 8 years ago feeling very grateful for the new shop, slowly bringing in some of our boards inside. Prior to its construction, we stored everything outside. I remember our first year having customers come pick out boards outside, some days in the rain ☔. Having the shop was definitely a huge upgrade to our retail experience. What a trip! 🙏🏻

Some of the coolest builds and installs were designed following our customers ideas. This was one of those ideas.
I designed the bottom of these faux beams to taper off as if they were recessing into the ceiling as a solution for not having a wall to butt into on the kitchen side. I really like how they turned out!
Still my favorite mantel I've done 🥰
I'm not a woodworker by trade but I figured I could use an orbital sander pretty good so I gave finishing mantels a try and boy oh boy did I love every moment of it! 🤩🤩🤩
I did a few of these carving style mantels and really like how they turned out.
What do you guys think?
Like it or pass?
Make no mistake, dismantling barns can be dangerous work. Having worked in safety conscious environments prior to launching Humble Barn, I approached each barn prioritizing safety. Not much good if someone gets injured or dies 😵
The weight of some beams is enough to crush you and if the nails don't get you, a come-along just might! We've had some close calls but luckily with careful planning we minimized serious injuries.
Keep looking up and don't forget to admire the beauty but most importantly, remember to have fun!

There's not a tractor more fun to drive than this 1949 Ford 9N go cart! 🚜💨
This beautiful little tractor was the first American built tractor to incorporate a three point hitch system that revolutionized farming and replaced the horse in the field.
It's a piece of history that is worth saving so I had it restored mechanically. It's maybe not museum worthy but would look good as a lawn ornament!! 🤗
Scott Adamson .sign.co is a true artist and a local treasure!
He's created some of the nicest signs in our area and I was lucky enough to have him create our Knotty Creek Lumber Co. Sign! ❤️
Knotty Creek Lumber Co. Is a fictional company but one that pays homage to my parents who allowed me to launch Humble Barn on their property. The shop is surrounded by the actual Knotty Creek that runs behind it.
I have some ideas as to where this beautiful sign might end up but time will only tell!
Stay tuned my friends ⚡
We took this beautiful but dangerous barn down in Lanark County 5 years ago.
Figuring out how to take a barn down safely was a challenge I took on when I started Humble Barn. And with the help of my crew, we were successful at doing just that and became experts in our own field of work. (no pun intended).
This was one of my favourites aspects of the business. It was challenging every time but very rewarding and it taught me so much about how these barns were built and I gained an appreciation for the amount of work that went into building these beautiful structures. My passion for reclaimed wood only grew stronger because of it.
All aspects of reclaimed wood tell a story of our past but it can also tell a story about our future and the future we choose to leave for our children and grandchildren. Because every time we use these products we are participating in saving our precious planet by reducing our carbon footprint and that's something that I will always be passionate about! ♻️
Knowing our tools are going to good people and will be put to good use makes letting them go that much easier!

He's a talented woodworker from Ottawa and possibly the hardest working guy I know!
He also has great content so be sure to give him a follow!
Enjoy your new shaper Tim!
When life gets tough things get put on hold and for me, that felt like an eternity. The last couple of months I've started feeling really good and I'm getting back to my passionate and enthusiastic self again and that feels amazing! 🥰
Today I'm biting into life like I did that apple while taking a couple barns down 7 years ago in Lac Sainte Marie Québec 🍎
L❤️VE!!
Making better choices to be the best version of me! Let's go!! 💪🏻🙏🏻
Another pic from the disposable camera reel. I drove out to Manitoba with my brother and a friend in the summer of 1999. My family on my mother's side is from Manitoba and we went for a two week visit at the end of July and beginning of August. (Harvesting is a special time to be in the prairies). I also met my wife there a few years later and where our son was born. So Manitoba has a very special place in my heart ❤️
The drive from Ottawa is particularly beautiful. I lost count as to how many times I've done that drive but I've enjoyed it every time! 🌎🇨🇦
I loved everything about taking our first barn down in 2015 in rural Ontario just I outside of Ottawa. It reminded me so much of my time spent on the farm. It was familiar and comforting. Looking back, I'm not sure I would have started Humble Barn without my experiences in Manitoba. It's a beautiful province and I'm blessed and thankful for my family that makes Manitoba all the more special! 🥰
Side note: For those viewing this post on Instagram, I added the song "Jet Airliner" by The Steve Miller Band. I discovered Steve Miller while in Manitoba and whenever I hear any of his songs it brings me right back to South West Manitoba! Enjoy! 🎵
One of the nicest home upgrades you can do is having ceiling accent beams installed. They add so much character and value to a home ❤️
We built and installed this one for a beautiful home by west of Ottawa 🇨🇦
