The SHS co op students completed the PEACE program. This initiative promotes awareness of elder abuse, understanding how and why it happens, signs and symptoms of it and how to recognize it. It also focuses on the link between a healthy work environment and how to avoid care giver burn out. Finally they learned strategies to deescalate situations that may lead to elder abuse and neglect.

Congratulations ladies!

Hello this is Kaylee. This is my myth buster. My myth is that I thought dementia patients do not remember recent events but recently I was proven why this was a myth. One of the residents with dementia have a hard time remembering where their room is, what time period it is, and especially who some people are. The other day though, I went over to say hello to them and they remembered me briefly. They had asked me where they have seen me before because I looked familiar to them.

Hello I'm Kaylee from the co-op program. My experience at the Nashwaak Villa so far has been a huge learning curve for me. I have gained interaction skills that I have not had before and also basic skills such as making beds. I have built many relationships with the residents, one being Shirley. She is kind hearted, funny, and always puts a smile on my face:)

School is back in! Today we welcomed our first co op student for this semester, Austin Graves. The staff and residents of Nashwaak Villa in Stanley and Teachers at SHS recognize the importance of Intergenerational relationships as well as the benefits of hands on and experiential learning in a "real" job environment!

The villa recently got a pet cat named Pickles. Today we (Brittany, Bailey & Tiffany) went in for a visit and took Pickles around to see some of the residents! Pickles is currently pregnant and expecting her kittens in about two weeks!! The residents love her and we loved getting to see the residents again now that co-op is over!

Today is intergenerational relationship day so we put on a presentation at the Villa to tell our stories of intergenerational relationships that we have experienced throughout our coop program. These are some pictures from todays presentation and some intergenerational relationship pictures as well. We are very lucky to have gotten to know these residents and cannot thank the staff at the Nashwaak Villa enough for letting us do our coop program here. Also, to Ms. Lardner for being an amazing coop teacher!

Leah Cain is a registered dietician who visits once a week. Her duties include monitoring weights and the nutritional status of the residents, and special diets like diabetics. She also gives education sessions to the staff. One day we helped her do an inservice on making “salad in a jar.” We had fun!

Yesterday we had the opportunity to chat with an Occupational Therapist OT who works for the Extramural Program (EMP.) She described this program as “bringing the hospital to peoples homes”. It’s a great program because people can get out of the hospital more quickly and be looked after by nurses, physio therapists and occupational therapists like Trish. She is responsible for things like fitting residents for wheelchairs, solutions to prevent skin breakdown and getting special utensils to eat with and do daily care. Thank you Trish for taking time out of your day for us!

The OutReach program has really shown me what I want to do for my career. On two occasions I was able to go and work with Melinda Hine, and one of her clients Guy Douglass. I really enjoyed it and decided I might really like to do home care in the future.

Today was Narrative day at the Nashwaak Villa. The Stanley High School Wellness class has been meeting with the residents at the Villa every Wednesday for an hour. This gave the students an opportunity to form Intergenerational relationships. After all the time spent together, each group put together a story to tell about the residents life. The rest of the groups will be presenting next Wednesday, June 3rd.

Narrative Program
The Grade 11 and 12 Wellness class at Stanley High School are taking part in a Narrative program with the Nashwaak Villa. Each group is partnered with a resident and spends an hour with them each Wednesday interviewing them about their life.
Once completed, a slide show is made for each resident. It will be full of pictures of them throughout their life, music they enjoy, and their stories they have shared with us. Narrative programs like these are used in many long term care facilities and are great for the residents because it helps them feel connected to others through the telling of their stories.
A narrative environment improves the overall well being of residents, staff and families through validation of experiences.

Today, Wednesday May 27, Betty van Oostwaard, Merle Sparkes, Jean Lyons and Marjorie Scott's narratives will be shown. Next Wednesday, June 3, Lloyd, Laura, Patsy, and Gail's narratives will be shown.

This is a photo of me with Betty.

Snozelen Rooms
Snozelen is a combination of 2 Dutch words, meaning ‘to snooze’ and ‘to doze’. As a concept, it is a form of therapy designed to gently stimulate the primary senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell without placing intellectual demands on the individual. They were used first as a treatment for autistic children.
The Snoezelen Room is a form of Sensory Stimulation
The room is designed for agitated, confused and distressed residents, especially with dementia and having sun downing behaviors.
There is evidence of great successes in this program showing residents going into the Snoezelen Room completely agitated and by the time they leave they are calm. There are portable Snoezelen Rooms.
When "Nancy" visited the Snozelen Room at the Villa, she said “that’s the most beautiful room I’ve ever seen!”

In this course they learned about the prevalence of elder abuse and neglect, the factors that contribute to it and how to recognize and report it. They also heard about the importance of a healthy workplace culture, the challenging work involved in caring for people with dementia and how care giver burnout can lead to elder abuse. Congratulations ladies.....well done!
