Soapstone Carvings by Ron Leach

I am self-taught in the art of carving, and while I have been carving stone for over 40 years, I am always learning more about it. I began as a woodcarver, but was drawn to soapstone, feeling that this material offered strength and a certain amount of permanence in a “throw-away” world. I enjoy the challenge of producing a carving that will showcase the grain and strength of each individual stone. Over the years I have experimented with different types of stones, as well as different methods of combining stone with other materials, adding new dimensions to my carvings.

I have been involved in many art and craft shows, from North Bay to Windsor, and my sculptures now reside in over two dozen countries around the world. In addition to creating my art work, I also enjoy sharing my experience and expertise with others, having taught many students at schools in the Muskoka area over the years, as well as adults in a variety of locations. One of my delights is to have former students come to show me carvings they have made and to share what is going on in their lives. I participate in about a dozen Art and Craft Shows each year, and truly appreciate the opportunity to meet potential clients and share my art. I am blessed to be able to make a living doing what I enjoy most!

My work studio is next to my cottage on the Kahshe River, near Gravenhurst, which is accessible only by water, and so is not open to the public. I work there with my wife, Jeanette, from spring until the winter snows come. I get inspiration for my carvings from nature, and from the shape and configuration of the stone, and I sculpt the stone into various animal, bird, or abstract forms. The carvings are then hand-polished and finished by my wife and myself.
