190 years ago, the British Parliament’s Slavery Abolition Act came into effect, initiating the process of freeing enslaved people across the British Empire, including Canada.

Today, as we commemorate Emancipation Day and reflect on the dark legacy of slave trade and its enduring impacts on Canadian communities, I encourage everyone in to uplift and listen to the stories of Black Canadians.

Our government is committed to combatting systemic anti-Black racism and discrimination in all forms and is reinforced by our extension of the UN Decade for People of African Descent until 2028 and our new Anti-Racism Strategy.
