Sharing my thought process on how I decorated my home to reflect my personality and my love of color.
I have pieces that have been with me for some time that are near and dear to my heart and some more recent pieces.
My end tables had a previous life. They are actually Ethan Allen night stands that were custom made in the 1940's for a couple in NYC. I acquired them at an antique shop located on Agricola Street in Halifax in 2009. I did use them as Night Stands in a flat but am now using them as end tables in my living room. I love all the storage, essential for a small space! These, coupled with an antique solid Maple Tea Wagon from the 1930's my mother aquired second hand in 1948 for $15, I chose a wood TV stand in keeping with the other warm wood tones. Although the woods are different rather than matchey matchey, they all 'get along', including the maple wood shelf under the oval glass coffee table. You will have to use your imagination a wee bit as I could not get it all in the photos.
I then paired my blue velvet sofa with gold and sienna accent chairs. I also added oversized, luscious down~filled toss cushions in greys and subtle golds to add some luxury to the sofa. The area rug and artwork came later mimicking the colors of the seating while adding additional colors to add even more contrast and pop. For the patio door coverings I chose a two-tone grey that blend well with the light grey walls so as not to compete with the colorful and bold personality of the living space.
Other art pieces and accents slowly made their way into the space adding more interest and splashes of fun.
With my kitchen Island being black & white, I paired my round glass dining table with low, black, velvet chairs then added a colorful, handpainted bureau for extra storage and then popped in a couple of fun, red counter stools. My side bar across from the dining table that holds extra dishes, table linens and precious tea cups gifted to me, was originally purchased and used as a shoe and boot cupboard in a foyer of a previous house.
I then went into my tickle trunk and brought back to life some old, stately lamps, also black, now showing off atop the side board and the end tables in the living room...adding some sophistication and a touch of elegance, if you will.
My entry houses a very functional, black hall table sitting below an original artpiece by a local artist depicting Halifax Historic Properties with the Morse Tea Building peeking over at it. Love having a little piece of Halifax Heritage to enjoy at home.
At the end of the day, I love walking through my front door and taking in all the color, history, labour and love that made this my home sweet home. 🏡
