We have another Board Member Spotlight! This week we want to introduce our Membership Convenor: Shannon!📚 Read more about Shannon (and Nox) below.

Name: Shannon Raynard

Position: Membership Convenor

Hobbies: Reading, crafting

Why did you join NSLA? I had been working in libraries for a few years and had just moved into a Management position. I realized that making contacts with library people outside of my own organization would be very helpful and at the same time, the previous Membership Convenor reached out to me and told me that she thought my attention to detail would make me a good fit for the position based on her experience with me doing statistics.

How long have you been on the NSLA board? I joined in Fall 2021.

What area of libraries do you work in/is your favourite? Public Libraries! Okay, all libraries are a wonder, but working in public libraries has given me an appreciation for the amazing work being done to fill the needs of communities through our institutions and it makes me proud of what we do as library people.

One piece of library wisdom: One book at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time, everything will somehow get done as long as you have a good team around you.

Any pets? Let’s see them! I am currently trying to convince my husband to get a second cat since we lost one last May, but here is our one current cat, Nox.

Photos from Nova Scotia Library Association's post 28/02/2024

We want you to meet some of our Board members. We're starting with our amazing Treasurer Kristel! Read more about Kristel below.📚

Name: Kristel Fleuren-Hunter

Position: Treasurer

Hobbies: All sorts of crafting (making jewelry, knitting, crocheting), kickboxing, and looking after my assorted critters.

Why did you join NSLA? I showed up at the AGM and NSLA needed a treasurer.

How long have you been on the NSLA board? A little over four months but I have been on the board in the past as a Conference Convener and a Professional Development Convener.

What area of libraries do you work in/is your favourite? My role is children’s services librarian but managing a busy branch takes up a good chunk of my time. I do enjoy meeting people from all walks of life. The library is never boring.

One piece of library wisdom: Be prepared for pretty much anything.

Any pets? Let’s see them! Roxie (dog), Rosie (cat), Lemon and Franklin (two disabled ducks who live in my house), Sadie, Bean, Latte, AJ, and Spike (rabbits), plus a little flock of East Indies ducks who do not live in my house.

The Canadian Library Challenges Database | Centre for Free Expression 23/02/2024

We want to highlight an important tool for week!📚

The Canadian Library Challenges Database provides access to challenges libraries have faced to items in their collection, and to displays, programs, room usage, and computer access. For each challenge, the database provides information about the challenge, including (1) the item, the nature of the objection, and the requested remedy; (2) (where available) the record of the review of the challenged item undertaken by the library; (3) the library's response.

Visit the Canadian Library Challenges Database for more information:
