Purple purple and more purple.

I HAVE mentioned this before but one of my all-time favourite books is called, The Secret Lives of Colour , by Kassia St Clair. It is a look at all kinds of colour, some extinct, some incredibly subtle, many you have NEVER heard of. In the Purple chapter she lists Tyrian purple, Orchil, Magenta, Mauve, Heliotrope and Violet. And don’t get me started about the production values. It’s full of all the colours she talks about.
Just amazing. But I digress. Here are some of my fave purple stones.

Green with Envy
I am drawn to green stones because the range of colours is so amazing. But I can also pair them with purple and orange stones in my jewelry with equally fabulous results. And yes there is a bit of blue here and there but it just keeps things interesting.

What’s WITH my attraction to FORDITE anyway?

It is so many things. The complete randomness of the material. The industrial origins. The simple fact that I am repurposing something so weird.
What can I say? I just love working with the stuff!

The Colour Blue
I think the first stones I bought/found/collected were blue.
It makes total sense as I grew up in Arizona.
And yes some of these stones could be called green but
work with me here, they live in the box marked “Blue.”

What is a Variscite three way?

Sounds just a little kinky doesn’t it? OK, so I have probably been on
my own just a bit too long.

Anyway, it’s a NECKLACE silly.

A wise person (and you know who you are) suggested that I make some horizontally inclined pieces because not everybody wants a long necklace. Some people have shorter torsos and they like a more compact piece.

Well here you go.

You can wear it three ways.

AND Variscite is apparently a relatively rare phosphate mineral. And it is occasionally mistaken for turquoise. I love the play between the green and white. It is strung on black rubber tubing.

Who doesn’t love kayaking/ paddling?

I was convinced to buy a kayak during the Pandemic by a wonderful, wise, & inspirational friend. I bought mine at Freedom Kayak in Caesarea, Ontario. What a fabulous place to buy a kayak. It is staffed by truly knowledgeable people & provides great service.

Such an enjoyable way to spend a few hours and I have made so many new friends. You should try it!

Rubelite pendant with Moonstone beads & Amethyst Drusy pendant

The centre stone in this piece is actually a faceted bead. I love the shiny geometric contrast of the pendant stone against the irregular Moonstone beads. I have a friend (you know who you are Lucy!) who loves, loves, loves Moonstone and this reminds me of her.

The bail on this other pendant reflects the crystaline, crunchy irregular surface of the Amethyst Drusy stone. I find these colours very magical. I am a sucker for all things Drusy!

Don Diego and I are truly happy to announce that my beautiful studio space in Goodwood, Ontario will be a SITE on the 2023 Uxbridge Studio Tour! September 16 & 17. Mark your calendars. We are site #4.

What is this? A colander full of beads!

Am I crazy? My beads were dusty so I washed them.

Then I had to dust the display too. Oh how I treasure these lovelies! There is so much colour here it makes me dizzy.
My husband once said, “He who dies with the most beads wins!” What a guy.

Ruby in Fuschite Why do I love these stones?

I love making jewelry that incorporates complementary colours. And pink and green ARE just that, complimentary colours meaning they reside on opposite sides of the colour wheel.
This stone is called Ruby in Fuschsite and it belongs to the mica group.
Apparently Fuschite is named after the German chemist and mineralogist Johann Nepomuk von Fuchs. Who knew?

I see a rose trellis in the larger piece. The colours remind me of spring.

When is Beige NOT boring?

Here are two new pieces hot off the bench.

On the left is Peanut Wood from Australia. I love the faceted surface and how those geometric shapes play against the round white areas on the stone.

The heart shaped stone is Suwannee River coral. Can't get enough of those spirals!

Can You Make Jewelry With Coal?

There once was a lady from New Brunswick who brought me a bucket of coal.
Sounds kind of like a limerick doesn’t it!

The coal was textured and neat looking but very soft and basically melted when I tried to cut it with my saw.

However I persevered and came up with these nifty looking, sort of Goth- ish pendants.

Just don’t wear them in the shower!

What's New From the Bench?

Two new pieces.

Crazy Lace Agate, a neat V- shaped stone with some gnarly crystals and an open back. Love it on a chain.

AND 3 sweet pieces of Chrysocolla Drusy in a crescent shaped pendant. A birthday prezzie for my Sis. I love the colour of these stones. They LOOK like Turquoise but they are NOT!

When I moved back to the Uxbridge area nearly four years ago I decided I wanted to support local artists. One such artist up cycles & recycles fabrics and zippers and all manner of shiny objects into TINY PERFECT pins.

I barely wear pins but THESE I cannot resist. I even had some mounted and framed so I can enjoy them on my way up the stairs in my home. I give you .

WHO KNEW YELLOW COULD BE SUCH A NEAT COLOUR?

I think yellow is an underappreciated colour. My wonderful Sister-in-Law gave me an amazing book about colour called The Secret Lives of Colour, by Kassia St Clair, which is full of fascinating stories about colour. It is also spectacularly produced.

Ever heard of Lead-tin yellow? Gamboge? How’s aboot Orpiment? I rest my case.

This year it seems that the less I plan, the MORE things happen. I usually have ONE sales event per year, which is the Uxbridge Studio Tour taking place on Sept. 16 & 17.
