Press Release: Canadian Museums' Instagram Account Permanently Banned in the Midst of Promoting Cultural Awareness and Education
Vancouver, Canada – October 6, 2024
It is with deep frustration and concern that we announce the permanent closure of Canadian Museums’ official Instagram account. This sudden action, taken by Instagram, followed our response to a comment from Hamilton Civic Museums—a simple exchange that aimed to foster cultural dialogue and collaboration. Our message highlighted the importance of sharing Canada’s rich history and the need to amplify voices engaged in educational and heritage-related initiatives.
This decision by Instagram is not only an affront to our team but an offense to Canada’s cultural, educational, and historical landscape. At a time when cultural awareness and unity are more vital than ever, the unjust termination of our platform silences not just Canadian Museums but the countless stories of our heritage, the indigenous voices we seek to amplify, and the future generations that will look to history for guidance and understanding.
Social media is meant to be a bridge that connects communities, encourages collaboration, and spreads knowledge. Instead, this action undermines the very spirit of openness and the collective mission of cultural institutions across the country. Canadian Museums remains committed to its mission of preserving and promoting the heritage of this nation, and we will continue to seek every available avenue to ensure this mission prevails.
To our partners, followers, and cultural institutions, we remain as dedicated as ever to fostering collaboration and celebrating our shared heritage. This incident will not deter us from continuing our work across other platforms, and we invite all Canadians to stand with us in protecting and promoting our national identity.
Instagram's decision goes beyond the silencing of a single account—it reflects a disregard for the cultural and educational endeavors that shape Canada's future. We urge the platform to reconsider its approach to accounts that serve the public good and reflect the values of inclusion, education, and cultural pride.
For more information or to join us in our efforts, follow us on our remaining social channels and reach out via our website. Together, we can ensure that our heritage remains accessible and celebrated by all.

CALGARY ZOO - Have you noticed anything different in the Pallas’s cat habitat? 👀
Last month, our Pallas’s cats swapped spaces in their habitat! As a solitary species, Pallas’s cats are only together for mating or for when a mother cares for her young. This move is an exciting enrichment experience for our male ‘Olaf’ and female ‘Pema’, offering new smells, sounds, and sights for them to explore! 😻
You can now find Pema on the left, closer to our wild boars, while Olaf is on right, closer to our red pandas. Stop by Exploration Asia to say hi!

CANADIAN WAR MUSEUM - Lectures: Alliance Warfare – Canada and the United States in Times of War and Peace.
Join us in marking this year’s anniversary milestones of the Second World War and the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The Museum is hosting the third lecture of its series about these watershed events and how they shaped Canada and the United States, key partners in the defence of the postwar international order.
Thursday, October 24, 2024
7 to 8:15 p.m.
Dr. Tim Cook, Chief Historian at the Canadian War Museum, will speak about the Second World War and how the experiences of Canadians and Americans during the conflict strengthened the Canada–United States defence relationship. He will explore issues of diplomacy, entwined wartime economies, and the defence of North America. The lecture is based on his new book, The Good Allies: How Canada and the United States Fought Together to Defeat Fascism during the Second World War.
Dr. Andrew Burtch, Historian, Post-1945 at the Canadian War Museum, will explain how the relationship between Canada and the United States has continued to grow and evolve, the two countries having remained allies and partners through the Cold War and in contemporary military operations.
Guests are also invited to meet the historians in the Museum’s Lobby from 6 to 6:30 p.m.
The lectures will be given in English, with simultaneous interpretation in French, and will be recorded. The recordings will be made available online and through social media.

BC LABOUR HERITAGE CENTRE - Q: When the government declared it was closing ________________ without making plans for the hundreds of residents with disabilities, the workers held a 22-day occupation.
A: The Tranquille Institution in Kamloops, BC
WORKERS TAKE OVER FACILITY FOR A BETTER FUTURE
A dramatic 22-day occupation of the Tranquille Institution began July 19, 1983. It was the first major event during Operation Solidarity. The government planned to close the institution and fire 600 union members without cause.
In response, the workers expelled managers and ran the facility themselves to continue to care for the 325 residents with significant physical and developmental disabilities who faced an uncertain future.
The occupation ended when the workers' demands were met with an agreement for their participation on a team to plan for the residents' future needs. The threat to fire the workers was retracted in collective barg*ining a few months later.

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**
**Meta’s Censorship Silences Canadian Cultural Institutions**
[Vancouver, Canada] – [September 30, 2024] – Canadian Museums & Heritage, our organization advocating for heritage preservation and cultural education, is deeply concerned about the recent censorship of our content on Instagram. Despite sharing valuable and informative posts about Canada’s rich history and cultural heritage, Meta has inexplicably blocked us.
This censorship not only undermines our efforts to promote Canadian culture but also deprives millions of users of access to important historical and educational information. Even though we adhere to company policies, maintain a safe and respectful environment, and amplify the voices of thousands of cultural institutions across Canada, META has continued to censor our content without providing specific reasons. This lack of transparency prevents us from addressing what we believe to be unjust or correcting any potential shortcomings.
We urge Meta to reconsider this decision and prioritize the dissemination of positive and uplifting content. In the meantime, we invite our followers to continue supporting us on our page and group, and we encourage you to subscribe to our YouTube channel. By early November, we aim to launch the Canadian Museums website, which will include an intranet exclusively for museums and heritage organizations—a groundbreaking initiative that is much needed in Canada. We will keep you updated with more news soon.
Thank you all for your attention and support.
