Some new sketches reflecting on family relationships. The holidays can be tricky being together with our most beloved people who sometimes can be the ones causing us the most pain.

May you experience many joyful and peaceful moments during this holiday season and find time to do what is nourishing to you🌟🕯️

Offering a Playful Painting workshop to some of the retreatants and nuns of Plum Village France was as much joy for me receiving as it was giving.
There is also a photo of me shovelling compost at the Happy Farm and of the beautiful grounds.

‚Checking Out‘ (40x60in/102x152cm) Private Collection

I was very pleased when this painting from my 2020 ‘Inside Out’ collection sold through the Rental and Sales program two years ago. But where it went and who the buyer was stayed a secret to me.

Well, the mystery got solved at this year’s TD Art Gallery Paint In when a very nice man cycled up the hill and exuberantly introduced himself to me as a happy collector of my work. He searched out my booth to meet me, look at my new work and show me a 📸of ‘Checking Out’ on the wall of his Victoria house.

I felt quite touched by his enthusiasm to connect; it is always a great treat to know where a piece of art finds its permanent home and what it means to the people living with it💚💛😻

“Westcoast Flavour” got damaged a little during transport to it’s new forever home so Me had to cycle there 🚴‍♀️ and do some on site repairs — complete with prosecco offering 🥂 and licks from puppy “Daisy”🐶

SOLD — ‘Lizard Man’ turned out to be the most inquired about painting at the recent Paint-In. So when it sold I wasn’t too surprised, despite it being my least recent painting on display.

People were curious about the inspiration behind it — which by the way is not reflected in the title. (My daughter came up with that one spontaneously when she first laid eyes on the piece🤣).

Like a lot of my work ‘Lizard Man’ is about humans relating to each other and the many ways we undermine meaningful connection, often unintentionally, as we do for instance by habitually turning to our devices even when loved ones are close.

It looks great on the wall of this Victoria condo. Thankful to the collectors for purchasing and then sending this pic right away🙏👌🤓

The third photo is showing ‘Lizard Man’ in 2020

What is Beauty?

I asked myself this in a new context after having a eureka moment on my bike yesterday.

Cycling by a property where a house has recently been demolished, I noticed a stand of bright red flowers in the far end of the yard against the backdrop of dark earth and dots of green grass. It bewildered me to see them in this quantity, this luster and in this location. Something was off.

“Jeez!” my mind literally exclaimed, “these ain’t flowers, it’s construction gear!” You must think, how can she mistake orange mesh plastic fence used to control traffic around temporary hazards lying spread out on the ground for blooming flowers???!!

But this isn’t where I am going. Remarkable to me is not my eyesight limitations. I am fascinated by how this realization did a 180 on my feelings. From joy to disappointment, from appreciation to dislike in milliseconds!

The same visual, yet two different stories completely changing my experience profoundly! So does that mean there is no factual objective beauty?

Is it simply based on the narrative our minds create around a look or and object?

Can I make myself find the construction fence attractive and release happy endorphins that way?

Is every phenomenon we encounter essentially beautiful if I only meet it without prejudice?

Is beauty a question of the individual mind’s storytelling or is there an evolutionary inheritance of what feels soothing, calming and joyful to us humans — particularly when it comes to the perception of environmental beauty?

I am being nerdy, I know, but this fascinates me. Wanna hear the questions popping up in your head — or answers you might have to my questions….Much appreciate everybody’s wisdom!

It is always such a treat to receive pics of my paintings from collectors🏠🤩🙏

This one is a large abstract from an earlier collection titled ‘Westcoast Flavour’ (48x60in/122x152cm). Doesn’t it look nice in this elegant Westcoast home?!?

Today is National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a good day to share with you some of the books by Indigenous authors I have been reading in the past 24 months while working on my collection.

I can recommend each and every one of them for different reasons, but if there would be only one every non-Aboriginal Canadian should read, I believe it is the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Summary. I find the impact of learning about the historic context of the residential school system, indigenous suffering and colonial mindset most comprehensive . And the report is very accessible in the sense that it is written in plain language with many first-person stories by witnesses and survivors.

It made me aware of some eurocentric views I myself carried with me when I immigrated 25 years ago and how to transform them.

What indigenous authors are you reading? Would love to get your recommendations!

Swipe until the end to see the inspiration to this new painting…Did you guess right???

My work usually is not derived from outside imagery, but this one definitely very much so. It is a riff on Henry Matisse’s beautiful painting “La Danse” from 1910. I admire Matisse’s work and also his resilience in the face of illness: when his body did not allow him to paint anymore he kept creating by doing cut outs which he arranged into paper collages.

I wanted to make the homage obvious in the title, that’s why I named it “Mélange Matisse” (acrylic on canvas, 24x12x1.5in, available at Artwrk https://www.artwrk.ca/gabriela-hirt
