Have you been catching the new videos? If you haven’t seen them yet, they are all available on my Youtube channel under the playlist Vejpoesi - the title of my new album (it means Road Poetry in Danish). The Danish connection started in 2017 when Jonathan Byrd (hard-core American troubadour / road dog) was kind enough to share his connection in Denmark and in short order I was on a plane to Denmark and a 10 date tour with The Sentimentals. I have a special chemistry with these guys and we’ve been plotting how to get them over this side of the pond for years, so the upcoming (Ontario only… alas) shows are a bit of a special occasion and I really hope that those of you who like my live work will be able to attend. We head out in two weeks and will be covering clubs, theaters and performing arts centers. My new album Vejpoesi is out today! Yeehaw! It’s always a great thrill to release a new recording because it means that all the work and planning, the mixing, the artwork, the thousands of emails and phone calls have finally paid off. Here it is! “Vejpoesi” (pronounced vai'pōˈsi ) is Danish for “Road Poetry”, which I thought was a fitting title for a record that is very much taken from the road. Side One - is a live-off-the-floor session with my friends The Sentimentals, recorded over two days in May of 2022 at The Maskinhallen in Northern Denmark, when lockdown restrictions were just starting to ease and I was itching to get back to my life as a touring musician. Side Two - is five songs selected from a live concert at The Mule Spinner in Hamilton Ontario - recorded by the late-great Bob Lanois and his partner in crime, Glen Marshall. Mixing these tunes was part of my in-captivity lockdown homework and let me just say that mixing live tracks is very challenging.I’m eager to read your comments and hear your feedback. I was introduced to The Sentimentals in 2017 through the open-hearted generosity of US songwriter / guitarist - Jonathan Byrd ( great guy and serious road-dog). I had been following JB’s travels on Instagram and saw that he was touring through Denmark…somewhat enviously, I messaged him and asked if he would share his contact with me. 48 hrs later I was on a Zoom call with MC Hansen discussing the logistics of a 10 date tour of Denmark with the acclaimed trio. What started as a typical ‘solo artist with backup band’ has blossomed into an enduring collaboration and friendship between us. The Road Poems- Tour is Stephen Fearing & The Sentimentals first tour outside of Europe and will feature songs drawn from our debut recording “Vejpoesi” (more on this later) and from the repertoire we have been drawing from for the past few years including our 2022 headline performance at The UK’s Shrewsbury Festivals.

A man called Wrycraft, who had a wonderfully warped sense of humour and a fearless ability to drop in a tasteless joke and make you laugh despite yourself.… gleefully and skillfully politically incorrect at the right (and the wrong) time.… My favourite way to interact with Michael was late at night, I would call from behind the wheel on some long drive under the stars and talk about everything and nothing and laugh and listen and be heard. This song, taken from The Unconquerable Past, very much sums up my collaboration with the “great” Danes. As MC put it, “It's not folk or rock or country or whatever. It's a little of everything”. I sense a bit of the late great Jesse Winchester in the melody and some late-period Eric Clapton in the arrangement. I’ve played this song on almost every stage I’ve played since writing it and it has become a fixture of my live shows. A song that goes all the way back to 2009’s The Man Who Married Music, it became a duet with Patti Loveless on Blackie and The Rodeo Kings’ 2011 Kings and Queens ( Deluxe ) and since we first performed together, I have loved playing it with The Sentimentals. Like many of the songs on The Unconquerable Past, this tune is very much a meditation on the passing of time, the ebb and flow of relationships and the memories we carry with us as we grow older and roll down the road of our lives. The tune has an interesting arrangement and demands a sensitivity and focus from the band to really capture its essence. On February 17th 2020, I found myself soundchecking at legendary Dutch club Meneer Frits (Muziekgebouw Eindhoven) in Eindhoven, at the rag-end of a lengthy European tour with Danish trio - The Sentimentals. The great Danes (!) and I had spent the last month or so working as a quartet in support of my then brand-new album - The Unconquerable Past, we were well greased and full of mid-tour piss and vinegar. I had arranged to film and record this particular show, knowing the venue felt good and thinking that we’d be in good shape after some 21 shows scattered across The UK, Germany, Denmark and Holland. What I didn’t know was that this would be one of my last gigs with The Sentimentals (or anybody else) for more than two years, and that mixing the audio from these live performances would become part of my lockdown-homework.The tracks themselves were recorded by my friend and Engineer / Producer Ankie Keultjes van Meurs, and thankfully most of the video editing was done on the fly by videographer Hein Kuiper. I hope you enjoy these snapshots of that night with The Sentimentals. In hindsight, it was definitely “the calm before the storm”. Tomorrow is the start day of this video series.

Alberta Tour Dates Announcement! Sometimes it's a whole lot easier to travel solo - 1 guy, 1 guitar. After the crushing disappointment of having all the @blackieandtherodeokings tour dates postponed, I knew that I had to do something positive to counter the negativity and was lucky enough to be able to book some shows in Alberta.
