How much do you know about Duchenne muscular dystrophy? In recognition of World Duchenne Awareness Day on September 7, we are shining a light on this genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. ๐Ÿ”ต DMD is a rare disease and affects approximately 1 in 5,000 male births. ๐Ÿ”ต Because the DMD gene is located on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects males. ๐Ÿ”ต Mutations in the DMD gene lead to alterations of a protein called dystrophin. In healthy individuals, dystrophin helps keep muscle cells intact. ๐Ÿ”ต Symptom onset is in early childhood and typically first affects muscles in the legs. As DMD progresses, the heart and respiratory muscles degenerate as well. ๐Ÿ”ต There is no cure for DMD (yet). But medications help slow down the progression. ๐Ÿ”ต Thanks to advances in health care, life expectancy is increasing and many young adults with DMD live into their 30s. ๐Ÿ‘‰ When it comes to DMD research, there is still a lot of work to be done. Every day scientists are learning more about degenerative muscle diseases like DMD, how to treat them and how to potentially prevent them altogether.
