Yesterday, when faced with the prospect of sweeping the floor or making more shavings … I put a rather nondescript blank on the lathe.
It had some nice crowns showing, but looked kind of blah until I got it round! I decided to keep the outside vertical to make the most of the grain, add a concave bevel, and just dish out the inside.
When I applied the finish, everything happened!
It’s so much fun when the wood dictates which way it wants to go!

For the first time in almost five years, I’ve made a piece of furniture!
We bought two stellar spalted maple slabs from the now closed Northdog Woods about three years ago, and finally got tired of moving them around the garage.
They have everything that we were looking for - bookmatched slabs, lots of curly grain, killer spalting, and minimal need for epoxy!
Top is finished with a combination of Grand Finishing’s Finishing Oil and Hardwax Oil.
The base is my own design, made from ebonized poplar ( thanks to my friend Bob Shanklin for the Quebracho powder!), and purchased from , my go to wood supplier for the last 40+ years!
Nice to know that I still know what I’m doing, even though it takes me much longer!

Over the last four years, I’ve been steadily decreasing the scope of my woodworking, from custom kitchens and furniture to live edge to charcuterie boards to turned bowls, and now hand carving, and steadily going from machine tools back to hand tools, where I started 40+ years ago!

You can turn bowls up to 12” in diameter, and spindles up to 16 1/2” long, and reverse if you are left handed, and for easier sanding. A great lathe for turning custom pens and other accessories.
