Today, we come together to remember and honor our missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples. +

🕊️ Red Dress Day is a painful yet powerful reminder of the ongoing crisis and calls for solidarity and action.

Far too many Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people in Canada become victims of violence. Indigenous women make up only 4% of Canada's female population, yet 16% of all women murdered in Canada between 1980 and 2012 were Indigenous. In 2017, 24% of female homicide victims in Canada were Indigenous women and girls.

💔 It's time to MAKE IT STOP.

As we reflect on potential ways to support staff, we return to policy; having a comprehensive, up-to-date Leave Policy provides a vital structure of available supports for staff that require time off across a spectrum of both Sick and Special Leaves, this also includes domestic violence.

Did you know that the Province of Manitoba Employment Standards updated Domestic Violence Leave to Interpersonal Violence Leave in 2021? ❓🤔 Interpersonal Violence Leave expands upon the Leave’s scope by encompassing domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking as defined in the Domestic Violence and Stalking Act, C.C.S.M. c. D93.

Throughout this month we’re reminded that, “We’re all 5 minutes away from something”, it’s a phrase often spoken at Morning Star, to us it means, anything can happen to anyone at any time. According to ShelterSafe.ca, “Domestic violence will affect more than 2 in 5 women in Canada”, and as leaders, it's our responsibility to stand up against it in support of our staff.
