As I re-integrate into society after a few weeks on tour, I’m here to remind you that Season 3 of the Podcast is in full-swing. A pleasure to have Paul Langlois as our most recent guest. Find it wherever you listen to Podcasts. Next episode coming early December sometime. Will give fair warning. Thanks for tuning in, friends.

Paul Langlois joined the Tragically Hip in 1986. Over their 33-year career, they won 17 Junos, were appointed by the order of Canada, inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and saw Nine of their albums reached No. 1 on the Canadian charts. Remaining active musically with The Paul Langlois Band, their latest album, Guess What was released in July 2023.
My interview with Paul Langlois for The Northern Report Podcast is available now wherever you listen to podcasts. Probably.
Paul Langlois The Tragically Hip
On December 12, 1996, The Tragically Hip stopped at Maple Leaf Gardens on their Trouble at the Henhouse tour. I had just turned 13, was a massive Hip fan and headed to one of Canada’s most glorious buildings to see my first concert. My Dad’s pal Mike was Johnny Fay’s drum tech so we got to the rink early and Mike showed me the stage, backstage and the racks of guitars to the side. I’d never seen anything like it in person. It blew my mind.
It was a great show. We got the full treatment and access. I’ll never forget how heavy the bass and drums hit me as we stood on the floor in the “henhouse” section while the band launched into Courage (for Hugh MacLennan).
It’s a warm memory from a season in our lives that was short on such moments. The Hip was the soundtrack. The band graciously signed this drum head and secured a lifelong fan out of me
So with that, I’m here to tell ya that the next episode of TNR Podcast is comin’ your way Wednesday with my guest, Paul Langlois. It’s a good one, too.
Paul Weber was on the road and in the taverns, bars and honky-tonks for 6 nights a week, 50 weeks a year from 1975-1996 before settling down in Maryhill, ON as owner/operator of the Commerical Tavern. We talked about all of that and more in the latest episode of TNR Podcast.

Been a long time, friends and unfortunately, I'm here with some somber news. I was saddened to learn of Al Hooper's recent passing. The East Coast Ambassador had a long and fine career in Country music. Al was kind enough to sit down and share his story on the Podcast back in July 2021.

Coming November 14.
It’s a long story but for now I’ll say it was really cool assembling the Spare Parts band for this Roy Payne penned gem. Some vintage “lost” Canadian Country & Honky-Tonk.
Featuring:
Chris Dunn - Guitar
Peter Kadar - Keys
Paul Kelly - Bass
Ralph MacDonald - Harmonica
Jay Nowicki - Guitar
Mike Weber - Pedal Steel
Doug Yuel - Drums
Recorded by Jamie Sitar
Mixed & Mastered by Wade Mosher
Art/Design courtesy of the Toronto Archives + Dan Russel
For my money, Roy Payne is one of Canada’s great songwriters. An unsung hero in the field of hardcore Honky-Tonk, back when infrastructure for this kind of thing actually existed in our nation.
If I’m being honest, the initial inspiration behind starting the Pod was hung on hopes of tracking Roy Payne down for an interview. I remain unsuccessful despite various attempts to reach him. Along the way I’ve procured even more albums from his impressive catalogue for my personal collection and this one here quickly became a favourite. Maybe you’ll like it, too…

Look out for a new episode of The Northern Report Podcast, tomorrow with my guest Skinny Dyck.
Among other things we discussed his new EP, Palace Waiting, the importance of an albums running order and why he ignored this crucial detail, his smash hit success song, Dreamin’ + what constitutes a “full artistic effort”.
Hear all of that and a little bit more, including the world premiere of a beautiful country music song from Skinny’s upcoming EP tomorrow wherever you listen to two losers having a conversation.
As I continue to rest my failed hopes and dreams on to this young man from Calgary, I invite you to give the new video from Carter Felker a spin.
My final column in the Honky-Tonk Times is centred around Carter. Filled with unapoligetic and deserving praise of his songwriting and new record, Even The Happy Ones Are Sad.
Carter was the most recent guest on TNR Podcast, back in May [find that wherever you listen to Podcasts] and though I’ve departed the magazine, I hope to conduct and release more interviews this Fall & Winter.
In local news, Carter will be here in Winnipeg for 2 shows on September 24 & 25. More on that soon…

I love this record. Carter Felker writes and sings about the s**t most of us are afraid to. Congratulations on the release.
My new record “Even The Happy Ones Are Sad” is available over on for the next while, soon on all platforms. Check the link my bio. I try my best to make songwriting and artistic output a major priority in my life because I enjoy it but In this day and age, self promotion and doing all the jobs comes with the territory. Being a procrastinator can be a major detriment. I’m learning as I go, so i appreciate you baring with me. Give it a spin, come see me and the trio across the province the next two weeks and give someone you care about a call.
