Want to know what my word of the year for 2024 is?

FLIRT!

Lol!

I know. I know.

It lacks substance. Weight. Gravitas.

So how did I get here?

At first, I thought it would be LEAD.

I use the word LEAD as part of my decision making process in my business: Does this opportunity present a chance to lead? Lead a group? Lead my community? Lead others to lead themselves?

It's a very effective guiding principle, but the word itself doesn't spark imagination or joy in my body.

It feels too heavy handed. Prim. Serious.

So I played around with the word MOMENTUM.

January can set us up to feel like we have to start from scratch and recreate the wheel. MOMENTUM, however, is all about building on what we've already created.

It encourages us to start slow.

No rush or hustle.

Just deliberate, confident and hopeful action.

I love MOMENTUM and will use this word as inspiration throughout the year.

But it still didn't spark the way I want to feel.

So how do I want to feel?

I crave lightness. Play, pleasure, laughter. Even whimsy.

For once, to not have to deal, cope, grieve, make do, get over, or pivot.

The word that came to mind was FLIRT!

Flirt with people. With my business. With life.

To me it's about being open. Ready to joke. To find the mystery, delight and quirkiness of being human.

To make space for things I truly delight in: nature, walking, drawing, art, dancing, journaling, yoga, plants, reading, writing and all my glorious friends, clients, and colleagues.

FLIRT.

Ta Da!

My word of the year is FLIRT!

It surprises even me.

Listen.

Life's always going to throw unexpected challenges our way. Many things are simply out of our control. But we can still define what we want, set intentions, and sashay in the direction of our dreams.

It wasn't a cold after all, it was Covid!

Thank goodness for an online business. I cancelled my clients to recover on the couch.

I was so tired all I could do was watch Friends reruns. The combination of being sick, Christmas time, and Matthew Perry's death, had me crying at any scene even slightly emotional. When Rachel's moves out so Chandler can move in...weep.

Time to get back at it...

Any other recovering perfectionists out there?

Let me tell you, I was the worst!

When I first started my business, I would plan everything out in excruciating detail: Content calendars. Elaborate follow up plans. Colour coded charts...

I thought I was being soooo productive until I heard someone describe my strategy as: "forever stuck at the whiteboard".

Ouch. Accurate.

I had to admit my inordinate amount of planning was producing very little actual doing (or clients!)

Planning was my safe space. No one could reject me or ghost me or criticize me there.

I was safe in my little bubble of coloured highlighters and sticky notes, but DUH! No one could hire me in my little bubble either.

I scrambled to learn how to ditch perfectionism. My mantras became: "Do B- Work" "Good enough" "Set a timer for 30 minutes, and when it dings, hit send no matter what"

I'm now an im-perfectionist. I get 'er done.

But here's the thing.

There are things I want to achieve in my business that require foresight and planning - ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO CREATING CLIENTS THROUGH MARKETING.

I can't effectively do this flying by the seat of my pants.

So I developed a loose plan: the 3 Step Marketing Plan.

It works for the over planner, the under planner, and the ones who just simply want to avoid any kind of marketing plan at all.

Step One: Deepen Your Relationships

Make coffee dates, get on the phone, have a virtual coffee chat. Tell the people closest to you what you're up to. Ask for help. I know this is a vulnerable thing to do, but it's the most effective way to get your message out there while you grow your business. Plus it's good for our mental health!

Step Two: Meet New People.

Networking is just hanging out with people in high ceilinged rooms, eating cheese, and trying to place where you know people from. You can do this! Plus there are so many more options to get to know new people that don't require nametags. Get out there!

Step Three: Social Media As Your Business Card

This is the place to continue the conversation with old friends, new people you've met, and connect to your community. It is not your first resort.

Let's talk about how much you hate marketing!

LOL!

I've heard it all.

"I hate social media"

"I don't know how to describe what I do"

"What if I get haters? Cancelled?"

"What if someone says I'm fat? Or uncaring? Or annoying?"

We know intellectually that to sell our services we have to market them.

But our bodies are screaming: "Nooooooo! I don't want to!"

So we either show up haphazardly with no plan; communicating only sporadically...or we over-plan with perfectionist fantasies of posting three times a day; ending up overwhelmed and not posting at all.

So what do you do if you're the face of your business, and people want to see you in photos, hear your story, and trust your brand to be reliable?

Find a middle ground between no planning and over-planning.

Set a very small goal for the week. So small that if your brain says: "that's not enough" you're on the right track.

Here's some ideas:

1. Invite one person for a 20 minute virtual coffee and during the conversation tell them about the last person you helped

2. Post a three sentence tip on Instagram and ask your followers if they've ever tried it

3. Email one person you recently met and let them know you're taking on new clients and describe the results your clients get

Start small and build slowly.

I'm not saying you're going to suddenly looooove marketing. But you might learn to not hate it. Baby steps!

Which one of these 7 decisions you need to make to grow your business trip you up?

1. Offer: What are you actually selling? How much is it?

2. Habits: What habits do you need to make to support you making a lot of offers? What's in the way of making them?

3. Messaging: What simple language explains the value you bring? How do you want to package your offer?

4. Marketing: Who needs it and can afford it? Where are 3 places to have conversations with your people about your offer? 

5. Vision: How do you want to play a bigger game to be seen, heard and take up space?

6. Sales: How will you ask for the business? What system do you use to get paid?

7. Delivery: How will you deliver your service or product and ensure your customers are happy?

The most common reason people don't sign up for coaching is: "I can't afford it right now".

Let's be clear.

I'd never suggest someone sign up for coaching if they're in financial distress. There are times when it really is too much money, and does not make sense to invest.

It is expensive...

And also worth it!

These three tools will help you create the change you want in your life:

MOVE YOUR BODY
When we talk about artists we refer to them as having a body of work. For you to create a new habit, a new business, or a new direction, you have to step into your body and move.

Walk - preferably alone and in nature (Or whatever way suits your ability and safety)

MOVE YOUR PEN
Journalling slows us down enough so we can see the sentences - the thoughts - in our minds. We can notice patterns, concerns, hopes and fears, and set intentions to change.

Write - preferably three unfiltered pages in the morning with pen and paper

MOVE YOUR MIND
Taking time to notice our breath each day grounds us in the present moment. We notice our thoughts and see that not all of them are useful or true. We can decide to create new thoughts we want to think on purpose.

Meditate - preferably a couple minutes a day of paying focused attention to the breath

Walking, writing and meditating will help you access your own unique ideas. They will calm your nervous system enough to move forward with clarity.

Move your body, move your pen, move your mind to quietly, simply and powerfully change your life.

I took Bear; all 135 pounds of him, to get a dog bath.

He took one look at the tub, and leveraged his front paws and weight to push back: "I think not. If you want a bath so bad, you get in. I'll wait in the car."

I was sweating and pulling with all my might: "C'mon, you stubborn goofball."

One of the staff saw my struggle and came to the rescue.

She sat calmly with a bag of treats and patiently coaxed him up the stairs; one by one, ever so gently. When he was at the top, she threw a handful of the most potent smelling sausages into the tub, and he couldn't resist jumping in.

I could make this story about selling, and the power of offering people what they want in a gentle, persuasive way.

But what struck me after I profusely thanked her, and suggested she should start a business that uses her particular talents with animals, she said: "That's the plan. Someday..."

I told her: "Listen. I work with entrepreneurs and business owners. If there's one thing I would recommend it would be to start now. Don't wait until it's perfectly planned. Do it now. Be willing to do it badly at first. Make mistakes and learn."

You're not going to wake up and magically be confident, certain, and sure of yourself.

You're never going to have it all figured out in advance.

There's never going to be a perfect time.

Someday is today.

Just begin.

Business owners generally looooove the service they've created.

They know it's helpful, healing and beneficial. They know once their client tries it, they're going to get amazing results.

But, when they realize they actually have to SELL IT...damn, things fall apart.

"I hate sales"

"I don't want to be pushy"

"I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable"

They're picturing pushing their service on someone who really doesn't want it. They're visualizing convincing someone to buy who thinks what they do is a waste of time. They're imagining how hard it's going to be to get a naysayer to say yes.

All of this feels icky, icky, icky.

So they either avoid selling, or they focus their marketing on trying to convince skeptical people to become clients.

Not a good sales strategy!

Try this instead:

✍️Write your content to the people who are already a yes

📈Pitch to the person who knows they need what you're selling

📢Speak to the people who believe what you do is valuable

Can you feel the slight but important shift in your focus and energy?

It makes the world of difference for how your message is received.

Marketing and selling is waaaaay more fun when you believe there are people who can't wait to hear more about what you offer!

The amount of conversations I have with business owners who really, really don't want to show up on social media is staggering.

I don't want to be annoying.

I don't want to get judged or criticized.

I don't want to waste time putting in effort if no one is going to like my posts.

I don't like the way I look and sound.

I don't feel ready unless I have my grid, branding, and posts planned, batched and set to drop at the perfect time.

I get it.

The first few times I posted, I felt like the whole world was watching and waiting to pounce: "You're doing it wrong. Who do you think you are? You're too old, inarticulate, and inexperienced to belong in this space"

Yikes.

Social media is a challenging space. It can be harsh, judgemental, and unsafe - even more so for people in the BIPOC or LGBTQ2S+ communities.

Your first priority is to make choices that work for you.

If you do choose to use social media for business, but still struggle with the personal motivation to show up, try this:

Create your own personal mission statement for social media. Reflect on your values, goals and politics. You get to create the intentional set of rules you want to live (and post) by.

Ask yourself:

How can I lean into being the face of my business?

How can I create more know, like and trust with potential clients?

How am I creating a welcoming, beautiful, safe space for clients to easily engage with me?

Am I recognizing the privilege I hold if I'm white, able bodied, and straight, for showing up as myself?

Do I want to accept the responsibility of being an example for what is possible for others?

How can I balance privacy and wanting to get my brand known?

Remember: you’re the one in charge. It will feel lighter and more doable if you take the time to decide for yourself how you want to show up, what you want to talk about, and how often you post.

Are you playing a supporting role to everyone else around you?

Making sure they shine? Making sure they realize their dreams? Making sure they get what they deserve?

It's time to be the main character of your own life.

"But I can't be the main character. My life's a mess. I'm all over the map. I don't even know what I want"

Hold on.

Have you seen the movie, "It's Complicated" with Meryl Streep having an affair with her ex played by Alec Baldwin?

At the beginning of the movie Meryl's character says to a couple celebrating their anniversary: "You two have led an extraordinary blessed life. For as long as I've known you, you've managed to always somehow do everything entirely right."

She then skulks off uncomfortably while her ex sidles up to his new young wife played brilliantly by Lake Bell.

Here's the thing.

The movie is NOT about the woman who has led a blessed life and done everything entirely right.

Hell no.

The movie is about the complicated, slightly unhinged woman making questionable life decisions by sleeping with her ex and getting high with Steve Martin!

She's the one we're rooting for!

She's the one we love who's messy, funny and stalking her therapist with pastries.

Sure, she's also super rich, and the whole plot is a fantasy for divorced women, but you get my point.

Main characters have obstacles. They have enemies. They have self doubt.

They're main characters because they don't give up until they win the race, learn the dance, get the law degree...

Conjure your main character energy.

You’re Elle Woods in the bunny suit standing in line with the computer in your arms.

You’re Rocky in the meat district punching cows.

You’re Baby learning how to dirty dance.

You’re going to get to the end no matter what.

You’ll fail. You’ll fall down. You’ll break down.

So what.

You’ll keep going.

You won't give up until you have what you want.
