The vision that comes from spiritual insight completely transforms the perception of who we are, what this world is, and what our relationship to it is.

Monoism is a doctrine that reality is ONE single principle in which all things are at one with and are identical to another and are also identical to the ultimate reality that is their source. Therefore, monism is a belief that only one Supreme Being exists. Monoism denies the existence of a distinction or duality in a particular sphere, such as that between matter and mind, or God and the world. The most popular form of monism is probably physicalism, the idea that only physical stuff exists. There is no such thing as a soul or an abstract object independent of physicality. There is also neutral monism, which holds that there is only one kind of substance, but makes no claims as to its nature. So all the souls of existence are unified in ONE Reality and the whole of the physical universe.
Having this concept in mind, if we observe the phenomenal world, which is subject to change, it seems to us that it is comparatively unreal (either having no reality at all, or having only a lesser reality).
The Upanishads can support both these concepts. The world is considered to come forth from the ultimate source and to have that ultimate source as its fundamental essence. The link between each entity in the universe and its source is therefore profound one, but can be viewed very differently.

Existence is both reality and pure consciousness. For anything to be “known”, we have to assume that there is a reality that makes that knowledge possible. Existence or pure Being seems to become diverse, but it is the ultimate Reality of all things, the “things” only being of an apparent reality. Thus “I” as a perceiver am really pure consciousness, and “that” which I perceive is also pure Consciousness. Thus I and that are really the same, and cannot be said to exist apart from that essence of sameness, in any real or ultimate sense. Thus the non-dualism of all things is established. Reality is then something that exists throughout all existence.
