Who created the first generating wind turbine?
James Blyth.
This Scottish academic is credited with building the world’s first wind turbine in his front yard and was used to power his holiday home in .
The 10-metre-high structure was the first of its kind to be built in July 1887. It would only be in 1951 that the first commercial facility, a utility grid-connected wind turbine would be operated in the UK’s Islands.

What is Scotland’s greatest man-made wonder?
The Forth Bridge.
This is a cantilever railway bridge located in the Firth of Forth in , Scotland.
Designed by two English , construction started in 1882 and it was completed in 1890. It has a total length of 8,094ft or 2,467 metres and spans 1,709 ft.

What is the largest wind turbine in the UK?
The Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm.
It was the first windfarm to be built in and has 30 turbines which are 115 metres high, with a capacity of 90MW of power. Split into 6 rows of six turbines, each a distance of 700 metres apart, they occupy a total area of 10 kms2, with three operational wind farms.
All three combined can produce, enough electricity annually to power more than 400,000 UK homes.

Is there such a thing as a rotating lift?
Yes, the Falkirk Wheel.
Located in Scotland, this is considered as the world’s only rotating boat lift. It connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal.
The wheel raises the boats 35ft in the air and allows for transit between two waterways in just 5 minutes. It uses only 1.5kWh for each rotation.
Opened in 2002, it now has over 500,000 visitors annually, making it is one of Scotland’s busiest tourist attractions.
