Hidden beneath the picturesque city of Lucerne, the Sonnenberg Tunnel is not just any tunnel.🇨🇭 Constructed between 1971 and 1976, this 1,550-meter-long (5,090 ft) marvel served a dual purpose: a bustling motorway 🚗 and a massive nuclear fallout shelter ☢️, ready to save 20,000 souls from any disasters. 💪
🚪With blast doors weighing a staggering 350 tonnes and a 7-story cavern filled with life-sustaining facilities, it was a Cold War titan designed to withstand a 1 megaton nuclear explosion just a kilometer away.💥
🛏Though it faced logistical challenges and underwent a capacity reassessment, the Sonnenberg Tunnel remains a testament to Swiss ingenuity and preparedness. Today, it stands as a historical relic that you can explore.🔍

The introduction of gunpowder in the 14th century indeed revolutionized military fortifications. Prior to this, medieval castles and city walls were primarily designed to withstand siege tactics like battering rams and scaling ladders. However, gunpowder-based weapons, such as cannons, could easily breach these traditional stone walls.
As a result, engineers began to adapt their designs. They lowered walls and extended them into broad, sloping earthworks, known as glacis, which absorbed and deflected cannon shots more effectively than vertical stone walls. This design also made it harder for attackers to position their cannons close enough for effective fire.
The star fort, or trace italienne, was a new style of fortification that emerged during the Renaissance, characterized by low, thick, sloping walls and bastions projecting outward at each corner. These bastions allowed defenders to cover all external walls with crossfire from cannons and small arms.
One of the most significant early examples of gunpowder changing fortress design was the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The city’s massive walls, which had stood for over a millennium, were finally breached by the Ottoman Empire’s powerful cannons.
In Western Europe, the Italian engineer Francesco di Giorgio Martini was among the first to propose circular or polygonal fortresses to better deflect cannon fire. In England, King Henry VIII constructed a chain of coastal artillery forts to defend against potential invasions.
By the end of the 16th century, the medieval wall was no longer seen as a viable defense against a well-equipped army. Instead, these fortifications became platforms for displaying power or were repurposed for civilian use.

Linear celebrates a new contemporary luxury aesthetic – light, minimalistic spaces that appear to be effortlessly, almost instinctively exceptional.
Adam Slaby, architect of the Linear model states: “Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art was a great source of inspiration for Linear. In creating
this Oppidum, we selected beautiful materials that stand up to the most” intense scrutiny and discreetly, effortlessly tell their own story.”

The Toblerone line is a fascinating piece of Swiss history. During World War II, the Swiss authorities constructed this 10-kilometer-long defensive line made of concrete blocks known as “dragon’s teeth.” The line was built between Bassins and Prangins in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. Its primary purpose was to prevent tank invasions into Swiss territory.
Now, here’s the intriguing part: the 2,700 concrete blocks that make up this defensive line have a shape remarkably similar to that of the Toblerone chocolate bar! Yes, you read that right—the iconic triangular peaks of Toblerone inspired the name for this line. Since its construction, the Toblerone line has been left to nature, and a hiking trail now follows its route.
One of the most well-known fortresses along the Toblerone line is the “Villa Rose” in Gland, which has been transformed into a museum and opened to the public. So next time you enjoy a piece of Toblerone, remember that its name is linked to this unique defensive structure in the Swiss landscape! 🍫🏔

The Romans, known for their engineering prowess, constructed forts across their vast empire. These forts served as strategic outposts, dotting frontiers and territories requiring a permanent military presence. While not designed for prolonged attacks, they provided safe havens for soldiers, storage, and records.
Over time, Roman forts adopted a standardized layout: rectangular with rounded corners, protected by palisades, ramparts, and ditches. Larger forts housed entire legions, while smaller ones were temporary accommodations during campaigns. Nearby settlements (canabae) sprang up around them, bustling with trade and life.
Strategically placed along frontiers like the Danube and Rhine, Roman forts prevented incursions. Imagine soldiers patrolling walls, watching over wild lands. As the Roman Empire evolved, many forts transformed into medieval castles. Local lords adapted these sturdy stone structures, turning them into symbols of power, chivalry, and intrigue.
Next time you visit a castle, remember its roots in disciplined Roman legions and their strategic forts.

You find yourself in a magnificent space, with ceilings soaring almost five metres overhead, decorated with opulent hand-crafted glass chandeliers and custom-made furniture and laid with fine-grained, solid wood flooring. It’s hard to believe you’re deep under the ground, surrounded by thick layers of reinforced concrete – especially when you catch the scent of fresh flowers from the inner garden. Welcome home. You have truly arrived.

Switzerland has built a network of about 360,000 bunkers and shelters to protect its population from nuclear attacks or other disasters, varying in size, location and age, depending on their purpose and capacity. Some are hidden in plain sight, such as under the federalpalace or the Zurich Opera House, while others are secluded in the Alps or in motorway tunnels. The oldest bunkers date back to the 1940s, when Switzerland feared a possible invasion by the Axis powers, and the most recent ones were built in the 1980s, during the Cold War era. Today, Switzerland still maintains its bunker network, but also focuses on other aspects of civil protection, such as prevention, preparedness and resilience.

This illustration shows a part of the greatwall of China, which is the longest and oldest defensive system in the world. It was built during the Qin dynasty (221–207 BC), which unified China under a centralized and authoritarian government. The wall was constructed by connecting and extending the existing walls of the previous states, such as Qin, Zhao, and Yao. The wall was meant to prevent the invasions of the nomadic tribes from the north, such as the Xiongnu. It is also a display of the power and ambition of the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, who ordered the construction of the wall and many other monumental works, such as his mausoleum with the terracotta army.

The phrourion was a common type of military settlement in ancient Greece, especially in the border regions and the colonies. It served as a watchtower, a defensive outpost, and a base for troops. The phrourion was usually built on a hill or a mountain, and surrounded by walls, towers, and ditches. Some examples of phrouria are the ones at Amphipolis, Pydna, and Potidaea.
The cyclopean walls of Mycenae are among the oldest and most impressive examples of ancient Greek fortifications. They are named after the Cyclopes, the mythical giants who were said to have built them. The walls are made of massive boulders, some weighing up to 120 tons, that fit together without mortar. The walls enclose an area of about 30,000 square meters, and include several gates, such as the famous Lion Gate. The walls protected the palace and the royal tombs of the Mycenaean kings, who ruled over a powerful civilization that flourished between 1600 and 1100 BC.
