🌐 E-invoicing Update in the EU 🇪🇺

The European Parliament and Council voted the Directive 2014/55/EU on electronic invoicing in public procurement on 16 April 2014.
E-invoicing is on the rise across Europe, with countries adopting obligations that affect taxable entities in national B2B transactions. Initiatives like ViDA ("VAT in the Digital Age") and the Council Directive proposal have propelled e-invoicing forward. However, there are delays as EU countries hesitate to introduce national e-invoicing rules that might evolve with ViDA. Taxable entities now have time to adapt to e-invoicing while waiting for clearer parameters.

🇩🇪 Germany: A draft proposes e-invoicing from 01.01.2026 for domestic B2B transactions. The EU Council has authorized Germany to proceed, making this change likely.

🇧🇪 Belgium: Plans for e-invoicing have hit a roadblock as consensus on a tax reform package, including e-invoicing, remains elusive.

🇫🇷 France: The introduction of e-invoicing for large companies, initially set for July 2024, is postponed to address concerns. It may roll out gradually, possibly from 2028.

🇵🇱 Poland: Obligatory e-invoicing for (almost all) B2B supplies starts on 1 July 2024, with invoices transmitted via a state system.

🇷🇴 Romania: After initial plans, Romania is set to introduce broad e-invoicing following EU Council approval.

🇪🇸 Spain: E-invoices may become mandatory for all cases requiring invoice issuance, but specifics are yet to be determined.

🇮🇹 Italy: Italy was the first country to implement eInvoicing and make it mandatory for all domestic B2B transactions for the sales of goods and/or provision of services. Since January 2019, VAT-registered businesses have issued e-invoices, aiming to combat tax evasion. The scope expanded in July 2022 and will further grow in January 2024.

Pros of E-invoicing: Efficiency, automation, scalability, security, fiscal audit benefits, time-saving, and lower environmental impact.

Cons: Software costs, staff training, tight schedules, storage expenses, and the need for electronic credit notes for corrections.

CSRD: New Sustainability Reporting Rules Unveiled

Starting January 1, 2024, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is poised to revolutionize reporting standards for large EU companies. These changes will impact how businesses disclose their sustainability practices and initiatives.

The CSRD's primary aim is to redirect investments toward more environmentally friendly technologies and sustainable practices. This directive sets the stage for a more transparent and eco-conscious business landscape.

The scope of the CSRD is substantial, extending its reach to over 50,000 companies across the EU. Within this number, approximately 15,000 companies in Germany alone will be affected. If your business falls within these categories, it's essential to be prepared for the upcoming changes.

In a significant development, the EU Parliament has reached an agreement on a new standard for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure. This will apply to companies that have adhered to the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) and will come into effect from the 2024 financial year, with reports published starting 2025.
