Artist Richard McGuire has been inspired by the noises, voices and sounds that came through the eleven windows of his house during the pandemic lockdown. We have prepared a soundscape - prick up your ears and develop a short comic from what you hear. With afternoon snack.

Born in New Jersey in 1957, Richard McGuire studied art at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, some
60 kilometers from New York City. "I was regularly between the two cities, as I sometimes worked in galleries during my studies," he says. "Of course, I couldn’t escape the graffiti that covered the subway trains. The art scene at the time consisted mainly of conceptual and performance art, and it didn’t seem as exciting as what was happening in the streets." Interview between Richard McGuire and Vincent Tuset-Anrès (2020 ongoing)

A lot of artists Cartoonmuseum Basel has shown in the last years, came together in the French capital to honour the Narrative Art. From our last exhibition for Dominique Goblet or for Catherine Meurisse in 2021, art works by Will Eisner we dedicated a show last year or Richard McGuire was also present whom our next exhibition is devoted. You can discover a lot of names from our programme in this group exhibition. And Chris Ware was honoured in France – stay tuned! Do not miss this amazing opportunity to see all those art works together in the heart of Paris.

Festival Central Vapeur 14
24.4.-19.5.2024
Coop Strasbourg Grand Est
Vite vite à la gare: Do not miss this festival in Strasbourg! Central Vapeur invited Dominique Goblet last year and she created ‘Les deux cercles‘ with the artist Nygel Panasco in 2023. The series from 2023 comprises drawings on the theme of womanhood, created in dialogue with French-Cameroonian artist Panasco. In this series, which is also where our exhibition poster’s motif came from, the figure of the majorette appears: a female leader who is often seen in Dominique Goblet’s oeuvre, symbolising the artist’s commitment to gender equality. And this Sunday you can have a walk through the current exhibition ‘Dominique Goblet. Abysses‘ at Cartoonmuseum Basel.
For the first time, a French city has been designated World Book Capital by UNESCO, for a period of one year from April 2024. That’s why the Central Vapeur festival and Les Rencontres de l’Illustration are taking place so late in Strasbourg. There will be exhibitions, concerts, professional meetings, workshops, mixes and drag shows in all kinds of venues. Amusez-vous bien!
✨ Your festival ticket from Strasbourg allows reduced admission to the museum in Basel! ✨

Dominique Goblet’s work revolves around the complexity of being a woman and of femininity in a male-dominated society. For years, the artist has been frequently meeting up with women, to have conversations while walking in
the woods. This artistic practice, which Dominique Goblet calls ‘Projet commun’, is a ritual in which her companions, who are all aged forty and above, tell the artist their histories and what they have experienced in their
lives. Each walk ends with a cleansing act, whereby the women undress among the trees, thus encountering their bodies anew in a poetic and sensual way.

Cartoon Sunday ‘Fibbing or lying?’, Sunday, 21.4.2024, 2pm–4pm
Lying is a skill. Your stories do not have to be true. This Sunday you can attempt on our workshop with your family and friends. It is all about storytelling. Register now and create your own comic the workshop is inspired by a work of Dominique Goblet. ‘Faire semblant c’est mentir’ (Pretending is Lying) is an unsettling and sensuous story that depicts Dominique Goblet’s childhood, along with the effects of the pressure and violence to which her alcoholic father subjected the family. Four separate but interwoven stories generate a multifacetedness and ambivalence, within which, different ‘truths’ collide.

Our Story
Comics, graphic novels, comics reports, cartoons, satirical drawings or animated movies have one thing in common: They are all drawings that tell us a story. The Cartoonmuseum Basel is the only museum and centre of excellence in Switzerland devoted exclusively to the art of narrative drawing. Its mission is to collect individual works, curate exhibitions and share knowledge about the genre. The museum contributes to the debate about the art of narrative drawing and about the social and political issues it addresses.
The museum grew out of its substantial collection of over 10’000 original drawings by renowned national and international artists. Today, the museum’s focus lies on carefully curated exhibitions displaying the works of a single artist or illustrating a specific theme.
Every exhibition is curated professionally and geared towards an international audience. The Cartoonmuseum Basel documents, promotes, teaches and challenges the art of narrative drawing. Our exhibitions focus on the artistic aspects of drawing, and on the creative process leading to a picture or a story. Visitors can explore different styles, traditions and artistic positions. All works are embedded in their historical or social context. The exhibitions cover a broad range of topics: from classical to contemporary works, from thematic exhibitions to monographic retrospectives. Related genres such as free drawing, illustration or animation are also within the scope of the museum. These contemporary genres attract younger artists and audiences.
The Cartoonmuseum Basel is actively liaising with other international museums, institutions and individuals working with the art of narrative drawing. Every exhibition is accompanied by a series of events such as lectures, talks and workshops. These events focus on a specific theme or the cultural and historical background of the current exhibition.
