उल्टा खेल संसार स्यों
पेखे नैनी मोउ
चरण भयो आकाश को
सर नीवै खड़यो
उल्टा नक्शा संसार को
पेखे नैनी मोउ
खायी मार्गः बहु चले
ऊंचे विरले कोउ ।

Mind is where attention is.

दिमाग हमें संसार के साथ जोड़ता है। सोया हुआ ये दिमाग में नहीं होता - संसार से जुड़ा हुआ नहीं होता। उस समय हमारा अस्तित्व ही नहीं होता (शरीर कर के) - हम अपने मूल में समाये होते हैं। उस समय बुद्धि रुपी तलवार अपने म्यान में होती है। जागते ही बुद्धि रुपी तलवार बाहर आती है - दिमाग से जुड़ती है - सोचती है या समझती है। ये देखती है - सुनती है - संसार के साथ जुड़ती है। दिमाग में आकर संसार से जुड़ती है।

The brain attaches us to the world. In sleep however it is not in the brain - not attached to the world. That time we have no existence (at body level)- we are settled in our heart. That time the sword of intellect is inside its sheath. As soon as we wake up that sword of intellect comes out of the sheath - connects with the brain - either is involved in thinking or in understanding. It sees - it listens - these attach it to the world again. Entering the brain; it attaches with the world.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਬੈਰੀ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
AG - 1299

गुणों और अवगुणों की ही लड़ाई है - अंदर की लड़ाई है बाहर की तो है ही नहीं। अगर अंदर न सुलझे तब ये बाहर भी आ जाती है। घर की लड़ाई अगर न सुलझे तो बाहर चली जाती है।

इसलिए लड़ाई तो अंदर ही है हमारे - झगड़ा चित और मन का है। जिसने यह निपटा दिया उसका बाहर कोई झगड़ा नहीं - जिसने नहीं मिटाया उसका अभी बाहर झगड़ा है। जिसने बाहर निपटाया है उसका अभी अंदर नहीं निपटा। जिसने अंदर निपटाया है उसका बाहर अंदर दोनों जगह मिट गया।

The battle is between virtue and vice only. It is the fight inside of us - it’s not outside. If it is unresolved inside; then it shows up on the outside. If fighting at home is not resolved - it spills on the outside.

That’s why the battle is in us only. It is between the conscience and the mind. The one who has resolved that; has no enmity outside. The one who has only resolved it on the outside has not settled it on the inside. The one who has settled it inside has resolved it both inside and outside.

अंतरात्मा की आवाज़ के आगे अपने मन-बुद्धि का आत्मसमर्पण हो जाना ही भक्ति है।

To surrender in front of the voice of conscience is Bhakti (devotion).

तृष्णा लोभ की माँ है।

Craving is the mother of greed.

—

जिसका ह्रदय में निवास हो जाए वही पुरुषा (~ विवेकशील) है।

Those who reside in the heart are Human (~guided by wisdom).

ਏ ਮਨ ਚੰਚਲਾ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ AG - 918

चतुराई में प्राप्ति नहीं होती। तभी विद्वानों को प्राप्ति नहीं हुई। जिस ज्ञान का अहंकार है उसे चतुराई कहते हैं। जो ज्ञान प्रतिक्रिया कर जाए - अहंकारी बना दे वह चतुराई होती है फिर। हेरा फेरी वाली दलीलें चतुराई है। अक्ल चाहिए भी (~ चतुराई चाहिए भी) पर समझने के लिए - न कि समझ की बात को नकारने के लिए।

Cleverness does not yield the Truth (the ultimate wisdom). That is why the religious scholars and academicians have not obtained it. That knowledge of which it becomes Egoistic - is cleverness. That knowledge which effects a reaction (as side-effect) - makes one egoistic; is cleverness. Manipulated arguments/ pleas (unscrupulous intentions) are cleverness.

Intellect is needed (~ loosely - some cleverness is needed) but to understand (where dishonesty is) - not for discarding a thing that makes sense.

जो दवाई काम न करे उसे छोड़ दो - जो ज्ञान माया की भूख खत्म ही नहीं कर रहा उसे छोड़ दो। गुरबाणी / वेदबानी में से खोज लो - कि भाई गलत तो नहीं समझ ली।

That medicine which doesn’t work; discard it. That knowledge which doesn’t extinguish our hunger for material (~ and reduce worry) ; should be discarded. Research (khoj) from within Gurbani / Vedbani - that it is not understood wrongly.

सारे संदेह तो तभी दूर होते हैं जब मन और चित एक हो कर रहें। उसके पहले तो मोटी मोटी बातें ही समझायी हैं - कि जो धन इकठा कर रहा है वह यहीं रह जाएगा। कि सारा दिन जो तू काम करता है - संसार के पीछे सारी ज़िन्दगी लगा दी इसका एक रत्ती भर भी तेरे साथ नहीं जाना। अगर यह बात इसके समझ में आ जाये - फिर यह पलटा खा जाता है। बाकी की शंकाएं तो फिर दूर होतीं हैं।

All doubts are only then cleared when mind and conscience remain in oneness. Before that only some basic things are explained. That the wealth it is accumulating; will stay here. That the whole day that you work - spending entire life running behind the world- not an iota of something of this will go with you. If it understands this from the depths- then it turns around. All other doubts are only then removed.

गुरबाणी / वेदबानी खोज का विषय है पढ़ने का विषय नहीं है। हमने जो इसे पढ़ने का विषय बना लिया यह बड़ा भारी दगा किया है। पढ़ना चाहे ठीक है पर सिर्फ पढ़ना नहीं है - पढ़ कर खोजना है। जो इसे ध्यान से पढ़ कर विचार लेगा उसे राह मिल जाएगा।

Spiritual knowledge is a subject of discovering; not a subject of simply reading. That we have made it just enough to read it; is being highly deceitful (to ourselves & to its purpose). Reading it is necessary but not just for reading - discovery had to be the goal. The one who will read it with attention as well as share & dialogue the meanings it conveys; will find the path.

मन का सिर अहंकार है। इस सिर की क़ुरबानी दिए बिना प्रेम भक्ति नहीं की जा सकती।

The head of the mind is ego. Without severing this head - the devotion in love (constantly walking on spiritual knowledge); cannot happen.

ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਜਗਤ ਕੋ ਲੋਗਨ ਕੋ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨ ॥ Dasam Granth- 59

सिखी और ही बात है। सिखी का सम्बन्ध शरीर के साथ है ही नहीं। जैसे मर्ज़ी कपड़े पहन लो। फरीद सिख है - फरीद की बानी है इधर - कबीर की बानी पढ़ते हैं हम। वह तो कोई आज जैसे सिखी रूप में नहीं थे। पांच ककारों की बात अलग है - वह एक वर्दी है। वह अलग निशानी है। पर अगर बिना आत्म ज्ञान की सीख लिए सिर्फ रूप को सब कुछ बना लेना तो डूब जाना है। इसी की निंदा करी हुई है गुरबाणी में।

Sikhi is something else. Sikhi has nothing to do with the body. Whatever clothes one may wear. Fareed is a Sikh - Fareed’s bani is in AdiGranth. Kabir’s bani is in the AdiGranth. They have not been in the attire what sikhi is today.

The 5-Ks are about something else. That is a uniform. It is an identity on outside. But without receiving the knowledge of the soul (Atam-Gyaan) - only if outside appearance is made everything - that is a complete drowning (of what it actually is). This has been criticised in Gurbani.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ॥ AG - 273

असल में गुरबाणी / वेदबनी मन की खुराक नहीं है - मन की खुराक तो माया है। मन की खुराक नहीं है यह तभी तो मन इधर की ओर जाता नहीं - बल्कि यह चित की खुराक है। मन कहता है खुराक उसकी है और कमाऊं मैं - मुझे क्या ज़रुरत है। तभी नहीं करता। दोनों की भूख अलग अलग हैं। यह तो मन को सब कुछ छुड़ा रही है।

In actuality, spiritual knowledge is not the nourishment for the mind - the nourishment for the mind is material. It does not draw energy from spiritual knowledge - that is why it doesn’t go in the direction of spirituality. This however; is the nourishment for the conscience.

The mind says that when it is not it’s nourishment - why should I make sacrifices to earn it. The diet for both are different. Spiritual knowledge is getting the mind rid of this that and another; which it doesn’t want to.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਅਮਰੁ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥ AG - 287

जिसने अमर होना है उसे ही नाम अमृत की ज़रुरत है। अगर नहीं ज़रुरत तो न पियो। पर ज़रुरत है - और कुछ लोगों को इसकी ज़रुरत हमेशा लगती है। जिसको ज़रुरत थी एक ही बात कान में पड़ते ही बेचैन हो गया। जिस दिन माया के रसों से मुँह मुड़ गया - रस कौड़े लगने लग गए - सच उस दिन ही मीठा लगने लगेगा।

The one who wants to be immortal (beyond the mortal body); feels the need for Naam (nectar of spiritual knowledge). If it is not needed, do not drink this nectar. But it is needed - at least some people always feel the need for it. The ones who needed it got restless even upon hearing one piece of wisdom. The day it starts turning its face away from the savour of material (all what we can see) - these start tasting bitter; that is the day truth will start tasting sweet.

जब मन मिल जाता है तब यह मग्न होता है असल में। जब यह मग्न हो जाता है तब संसार का दुख और सुख - हानि और लाभ - जन्म मरण - ये कुछ इसे नहीं असर कर सकते। संसार में रहते हुए भी इसे संसार का कोई लेप नहीं है।

मग्न निर्लेप होता है - बच्चा खेलता है मग्न हो कर। बस अपने आप से जुड़ा हुआ है संसार से नहीं जुड़ा हुआ। मग्न की अवस्था संसार से अलग कर देती है - सच की प्राप्ति फिर होती है।

When the mind is found (from the body); actually only then it gets totally engrossed. When it is totally engrossed (absorbed inwardly) then the worldly happiness and sadness, profits and losses and worldly birth and death - all do not affect it. Even staying in the world it still not plastered with worldly.

Absorption (with minding the mind) keeps it detached - as if a child playing completely engrossed and totally attached to itself & not the world. The state of engrossment separates it from the world - then truth is attained.

ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਵਡਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਥੋਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥ AG - 547

ईसाई और इस्लाम मतें यह कहती हैं कि जब कोई अंदर भेद रखा हुआ है जिसके प्रति अंदर कोई पाप या गुनाह किया है - उसे सामने बोल कर मान लेने से माफ़ हो जाता है। मान लेना कि मैं गलत सोचता रहा और माफ़ी मांग लेनी - यह करना अत्यंत मुश्किल है। जितनी देर इस भेद और सच के बीच का पड़दा उठा नहीं देता उतनी देर सच से मिलना नहीं होता। मान लेना कि मेरी मति थोड़ी है पड़दा उठा देता है।

Christian and Islam ideologies say that if some secretive grudge or sin against someone is held inside of us - accepting it from the front will excuse that grudge or sin. Accepting that I was in the wrong - have been thinking wrong and asking for forgiveness; is rather a very difficult task.

Till the time it doesn’t lift the veil between that secret and the truth - it doesn’t meet the truth. Accepting that my thinking was little/lowly - lifts that veil.

ਪੜੇ ਸੁਨੇ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਈ ॥
ਜਉ ਸਹਜ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ AG - 655

संतोष में रहना ही बंदगी है भक्ति है। माला का फेरना भक्ति नहीं है - वाहेगुरु वाहेगुरु करना या राम राम करना भक्ति नहीं है - गुरबाणी / वेदबानी पढ़ना या गाना भक्ति नहीं है। गुरबाणी / वेदबानी को समझ कर अपने ऊपर लागू करना भक्ति है। जो विधि बताई है उसके अनुसार चलना ही भक्ति है।

To stay in contentment is to be in devotion - is to be in bandagi (bound by divine will). The turning of mala (rosary) beads - repetition of waheguru waheguru or raam raam or another name is not devotion- even reading or singing of spiritual texts is not devotion.

Understanding Gurbani / Vedbani / spiritual texts and applying it to ourselves; is devotion. Adopting the method that is explained and living it is devotion (bhakti).

सच के बिना मन ने नहीं थमना है। मन मंदिर तभी खड़ेगा जब सुर्ती स्तंभ लग जाएगा अंदर। सुर्ती स्तंभ बन कर मन को सहारा दे तभी तो मन खड़ेगा - जैसे कि मन एक तंबू है और जैसे ही सुर्ती-स्तंभ गिरा तैसे ही मन गिर गया।

In the absence of truth the mind is not going to stay upright. The temple-mind will only stand when the pillar of attention (constantly in spiritual knowledge) is established in it. When this attention-pillar supports the mind; then it can stand upright. Just like a tent - if the pillar holding it falls - the mind too falls to lower ground.

मनुष्य का मनुष्य पर विश्वास कौन सी चीज़ ने पैदा करना था - प्रेम ने। तो इतनी बेविश्वासी कहाँ से हुई । यह तब हुई जब गुरमति / वेदमाति (वेद / गुर = ज्ञान को प्रधान रखने वाला मार्गः) छोड़ कर और ही सोच धारण कर ली। प्रेम भक्ति त्याग दी - बुद्धिहीन हो गए।

What had to build the trust between one human and another - it had to be love (prem). Then how come so much distrust occurred. It happened when Gurmati / Vedmati (Gur / Ved = Knowledge); the path which kept spiritual wisdom at the forefront was discarded & another thinking (mati/soch) adopted. The understanding that would create love (prema bhakti) was relinquished; thus becoming completely ignorant.

ਕਾਸੀ ਤੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਧੁਨਿ ਕਾਸੀ ਜਾਈ ॥ AG - ८५७

जो बात ह्रदय से पैदा होती है वह फिर टिकती भी जा कर दुसरे के ह्रदय में है। उधर ही जा कर समझ आती है।

That talk which is born from the heart - also only rests in the others’ heart. It is understood there only.
