We are thrilled to share our experience from the recent Architects, not Architecture event in Munich. Sky-Frame proudly supported this inspiring occasion with our esteemed local distribution partner, Edwin Roth Metallbau.
The event featured insightful talks by Dr. Christine Lemaitre, Dietmar Eberle, and Max Dudler, who shared their journeys, influences, and intellectual biographies rather than discussing their renowned international projects. This unique approach offered a deeper understanding of the architects' work, providing a truly enlightening experience.
Architects, not Architecture brings to light the personal stories behind the architectural masterpieces, allowing us to see the human side of the profession. This unique perspective creates a sense of connection and understanding. We are already looking forward to the next edition of this event in Berlin in the fall of 2024.
Thank you to Edwin Roth, Markus Knass, and Fermín Tribaldos for their collaboration and to Tim Dornaus for beautifully capturing the event.
ETH architect and designer Stephan Hürlemann has achieved a great deal in his career to date: major architectural projects, design drafts for renowned companies such as Vitra or de Sede, and installations such as "Piece of Sky" for Sky-Frame. Now, in a time of great crisis, Stephan Hürlemann wants to achieve more. He is now working in various collaborations on projects close to his heart. We meet him in his studio in Zurich-Albisrieden.

In this villa, inside, you are also a bit outside. Cabinets, bathrooms, balustrades, and other elements are added as separate 'furniture' to a steel and glass structure. The austere, almost futuristic architecture contrasts nicely with the leafy surroundings. And can more or less dissolve into it thanks to the reflections on the glass.

This mixed-use project redeveloped the site previously occupied by the Sporting d’Hiver building next to the Place du Casino in the heart of Monte Carlo. The old building block provided little public access through the site. Hence, one of the project's aims was to increase permeability significantly. Introducing a new pedestrianised central street was the principal urban move to an ensemble comprising a series of mixed-use pavilions providing residential, retail, office, cultural and conference facilities. This key location in Monte Carlo is reasserting its historical role in the Principality's economic, social and cultural development. The elegantly curved shape of each pavilion enables the front facade to be maximised, providing extraordinary views and abundant natural light. Light wells between the pavilions allow daylight to filter into the landscaped courtyards adjacent to the conference facilities below ground. The redevelopment's design is centred on ground-level public access to create an enhanced sense of place in this central part of Monte Carlo. The re-landscaped design offers 30% more public space, breathing renewed life into the quartier. The new retail street provides generous connectivity and is animated by rich landscaping, casual seating and vertical planting on the residential pavilion facades.

Perched on the Malibu coastline, added elevation on the first level of this beach house accounts for predicted rising sea levels, elongating the existing structure. The design emphasises the present views of the site, allowing each space to take advantage of the unique qualities of the oceanfront home while natural light courses throughout each level. Sitting over 16ft above sea level, tiered terraces frame two stacked volumes with vertical exterior fins to create structural depth. Raised windows and ceilings expand the space and frame the beach views, while a combined kitchen, dining and family room create an open floor plan. The entryway focuses on a warm, inviting space that opens up into the larger main floor’s vast ocean views and carries natural light through the second floor to create an airier, alluring home that extends well beyond the beach below.

Discover the Schedlberg, a Bavarian Forest gem transformed by architect Peter Haimerl. Mixing preservation with innovation, Haimerl revives old structures, weaving history into the future. Inspired by mossy granite blocks, he reimagined the 1839 wooden block dwelling, integrating concrete blocks into its framework. Preserving weathered shingles and raw granite walls, the exposed concrete bridges are old and new. Large glass surfaces invite nature, while unique windows and doors add character. Inside, raw and original spaces intertwine, offering captivating views and perspectives. With three bedrooms and a layout echoing its heritage, the Schedlberg is a testament to masterful architectural storytelling.

Meet "Rag Doll," a private house renovation in Knokke, spanning 390 m². The homeowners grappled with choices — modern or classic, city or countryside, presenting a snapshot of their dualities and uncertainties. The unexpected rationality of the process led to a desire for a substantial basement. Preserving the registered house involved bracing it, creating a unique solution: a fully transparent ground floor, a sophisticated 'glass house.' This transparency harmonizes with the cottage above, showcasing a captivating duality — the protected cottage and the exposed lower level. A subtle interplay, much like the clients' contrasting preferences — city and countryside, renovation and new construction, house and minimalism — reveals a nuanced architectural composition.

Nestled in the Finnish Archipelago, Villa Alva is an extraordinary summer retreat. Balancing sustainability, subtlety, respect, openness, and modernity is a testament to architectural finesse. The design aimed to seamlessly integrate the breathtaking landscape into the house while respectfully harmonising with the island's topography. The challenge was to blend the island's traditional forms with modern, contemporary architecture. Embracing the principle of "less is more," the architectural response presents a classic, highly restrained pitched-roof house crafted in solid wood. To the north, it echoes Scandinavian characters with classical box windows. Opening generously to the south with fully retractable corner glazing leading to the terrace, it blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, expanding the 100m² summer house into infinity. The interior layout prioritises spatial experience, optimising for openness. Two inserted, non-full-height boxes within the open pitched-roof space house individual rooms, each offering an additional gallery area. The parent's bedroom box, featuring exposed concrete, seamlessly integrates with the living space through a steel-glass folding door, housing the kitchen as an oversized central island. In contrast, the entire interior merges seamlessly with the adjacent terrace, serving as a bridge to the surrounding landscape.

The classic alpine ski lodge concept is being questioned increasingly in the context of climate change. Alpine retreats nowadays extend their periods of use to the whole year and must also provide much more design and equipment than the former rural log buildings. Those who hike in ski resorts off-season - and increasingly also in winter due to the lack of snow - are often surprised by the out-of-place buildings that seem stripped of their function amidst the green sprouting nature. The modern mountain cabin, on the other hand, is multifunctional, combines sustainability with modern technology, and blends in perfectly with its surroundings in the best-case scenario.

The Casa G is built mostly in naked concrete and glass. The structure uses Sky-Frame frameless, sliding windows, one of which spans an impressive 35m, and the entire living room looks out towards the water and the mountains. This cleverly accentuates the overall sense of clarity and design simplicity. The result is an almost invisible home that blends into the land, where you can enjoy the tranquillity of the landscape.

Explore the contemporary mountain cabins in the Austrian Alps by Dominik Aichinger and designkollektiv. These cabins redefine the classic ski lodge, embracing sustainability, modern technology, and seamless integration with nature. The sleek, purist design features Sky-Frame's frameless glass fronts, blending seamlessly with delicate wooden slats. The interior follows the same principles, offering a cosy retreat with lowered room height and stunning views. Embrace the changing seasons with soft natural tones that mirror the surrounding landscape. Discover the raw beauty of the surroundings reflected in the carefully selected materials – wood, metal, and stone. The minimalist aesthetic extends to the structurally effective elements crafted from black burnished steel. The iconic steel staircase connects living levels, revealing an independent apartment below. The second building, slightly offset, offers three apartments for architecture enthusiasts. Eggerlicht's carefully selected luminaires add a touch of elegance, contributing to functional lighting. The Buckingham Road project features two gable forms connected by an entrance hall and a landing, creating a seamless flow between the spaces. The house includes a family space, playroom, lounge, an office (concealed behind a James Bond-esque bookcase), four bedrooms, a games room and a gym. The prominent use of brick is complemented by glass, concrete, and timber inside and outside the property. Unconventional approaches such as stepped brick piers and brickwork soffits were employed to frame the entrance, while enlarged window openings with outer planes of brickwork provided relief and character. To maximise daylighting and extend the living spaces into the garden, larger glass areas were incorporated at the rear of the house. This includes a two-storey void over the dining room, a corner-opening pocket door leading to a covered veranda with a steel-lined circular roof light, and adaptations of the stepped brickwork and soffit detailing found on the front elevation.
