The last two weekends students completed their Research Seminar course! ✨

The MBF Research Seminar is usually taking place in the second semester and is encouraging students to take their first attempts at writing their own research paper. The subject of the seminar contribution should be on an issue of current academic interest and may be related to the Master's thesis, i.e., students may research a specific aspect of their Master's thesis in greater depth.📖

To foster the exchange of ideas, seminars are concluded by a joint research retreat abroad, which this year took place in Dornbirn. Besides presenting their findings and discussing the researched ideas students also took place in a team-building activity - Outdoor Escape Room. 🤝

Many thanks to our Professors for offering interesting topics to our students and for giving them valuable insights along the way! 🙌

Besides Europe, our students also had a chance to discover Asia, during their “Asia Compact: Private Equity” course in Singapore!

The course offers a unique opportunity to get exposure not only towards the Private Equity industry in general but in particular with regard to Southeast Asia and its Emerging Markets. Students covered such subjects as investment process, structure and deal dynamics of buyouts, key market trends in Southeast Asia and the investors' perspectives on PE funds. This Asia Compact course took place at the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia (SGI-HSG), the local institute of the University of St.Gallen in Singapore.

Special thanks go to Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkoetter for teaching the course and sharing his knowledge with our students

Our students visited London and Frankfurt during the semester break for block seminars.

Students have discussed various quantitative financial modelling case studies and coded their solutions during the course “Quantitative Portfolio Management” at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main.

Combined with various student presentations, this course has provided an overview of advanced, state‑of‑the‑art approaches in Quantitative Portfolio Management.

Big thank you to Michael V. for sharing his knowledge with our students!

The course, offered as part of the MBF curriculum, enables a better understanding of the unique features of insurance processes and practices specific to the London Insurance Market which is one of the leading insurance and reinsurance markets in the world.

Special thanks go to Alexander Alabaster, Joel Pergande, and Adrian Champion for sharing their experiences with our students and Assistant Professor Dr. Despoina Makariou for leading the course!

Another thing that makes the MBF programme so unique, is the community that it builds. Each year we see extremely motivated and ambitious people that inspire each other and build connections and friendships for life. 🤝

We are extremely proud to see students like Zachary Matteucci (class 2022), who even after graduation want to come back as our alumni to share their knowledge with the next generation of the MBF. 🧑‍🎓

During this seminar, students worked in small teams on a real work project, provided and supported by Credit Suisse, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), UBS, Zürcher Kantonalbank and Fidelity International. In the MBF we encourage our students to be open-minded and learn about finance from new perspectives. Through different courses, they gain unique skills and broaden their horizons, which in the end allows them to find their path in the finance industry.

A great example of how this proves successful is the story of Richard Papp, co-founder of FLIT Invest and our MBF alumni (class 2017).

Do you want to know how our Master’s programme helped him to find his path? Do you want to discover what makes MBF special and what should our students keep in mind? Then watch the video below!

Just last week our students had a chance to participate in a Commodities course in London! 🇬🇧

The course focuses on commodity finance and economics and is taught by Zeno Adams, an academic, and Bernd Brommundt, a practitioner at bp in London. Students are therefore offered a balanced mix of the theoretically and practically relevant aspects of commodity markets. 🛢

During the first sessions at the University of St.Gallen students learnt more about hedging and speculation, commodity pricing, and the impact of commodity index speculation on food and energy prices. In London on the other hand they shifted towards practically relevant topics such as the structure of a crude oil options book, physical commodity trading, and the structuring of commodity contracts. 📊

Going back to the integration days with our new MBF intake...😏

They did not only have a chance to take part in the event organized by Credit Suisse in Zurich, where they learnt more about building their carrier path in the banking industry but also take part in the workshop conducted by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Kernbach “Design your future”. 📚

We want to thank both Credit Suisse and Prof. Dr. Sebastian Kernbach for their contribution to the integration days!

Congratulation to the new students for their work on the integration days’ case studies and we hope that the first week of the semester is going well for all of you! 🥳

It is officially the start of an Autumn semester! 🍁

We are very excited about our curriculum and the events that we already have planned for our students.
A warm welcome goes to our new MBF intake, we hope your first semester of the programme will be a great experience! 🏆

We wish you all a successful semester! 🥳

We are not slowing down the tempo and we come to you with another great success of HSG and MBF students! ✨

MBF student Kilian Gerding and Rasmus Schraut made first place in this year’s Southeastern Hedge Fund Competition and received a scholarship award of US$ 10,000! 🏆

Kilian and Rasmus proposed a trading strategy that systematically harvests volatility risk premia in commodity markets. Both convinced a jury of U.S. hedge fund professionals with their innovative approach, high risk-adjusted performance, and their sound risk mitigation. With their strategy, they surpassed other teams from Yale School of Management, Duke University, and the University of Texas. 🎓

27/08/2022

Weiqi (Loraine) Liu, an MBF student, received this year’s STARR fellowship. 🎓

Starr International Foundation Scholarship Fund is aimed at highly talented, foreign-language students with a recognized, foreign Bachelor's degree who are pursuing a Master's degree in the English-language programmes. ✨

The grant in the amount of CHF 20 000 is awarded each year to students with outstanding academic performance. Our warmest congratulations go to Weiqi and we wish her further success! 🏆

In this year’s Financial Times Master in Finance pre-experience ranking the MBF was ranked in 14th place, just after the Bocconi University’s programme!

Even though this time we didn't hold to our long-standing 6th place, we congratulate all the Universities on their work and we hope that their devotion to education was appropriately rewarded 🎓

We continue to work hard to reflect our economic fundamentals: well-educated graduates receiving top job placements, earning attractive salaries in the financial industry, and enjoying an excellent reputation among employers and colleagues. We hope to see the results of that in the 2023 Financial Times Ranking! 📚

MBF students among the top in prestigious M&A competition! 🏆

Patrick Aoun, Karol Ciesluk, Henrik Larsen and Michael Sakowski (the “Excel-erators”) achieve 2nd place out of over 150 teams in this year’s Harvard case competition! Congratulations! 🥈

The Global Case Competition at Harvard (GCCH) is the most renowned and largest global M&A case competition.

In this year’s edition, teams took the role of buy-side advisors for Japanese video game producer Bandai Namco on whether they should acquire Games Workshop, the leading British hobby miniatures and tabletop battle games player. The “Excel-erators” from HSG recommended that the producer goes forward with the acquisition, arguing with a strong strategic fit, attractive standalone valuation and potential for synergy realization. 📊

They attribute their success in the Harvard case competition to the rigorous curriculum of the MBF programme, as well as their practical learnings from internships in consulting, private equity and investment banking.

We congratulate you and wish you the best of luck with your future plans! 👏

With the Autumn semester starting soon we look back at some of our students' achievements. 🏆

An example of such is the fact that an MBF student team was chosen as one of 16 out of 77 best teams who made it to the final round of the 2022 Kellogg-Morgan Stanley Sustainable Investing Challenge! 🌳

We are very proud that our students are influencing the world of Sustainable Finance. Congratulations to Samuele Tamanza, Severin Koch, David Matern and Elias Hegner on your work on "Black Soldier Flies Convertible Minibonds"! 🪰

We would also like to thank Dr. Martin Nerlinger for supporting the team during their journey.
