LET'S TALK VITAMIN A TODAY

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is good for healthy vision, skin, bones and other tissues in the body. Vitamin A often works as an antioxidant, fighting cell damage, but it also has many other uses.

There are two types of vitamin A. Preformed vitamin A, also called retinol, is found in animal products. Good sources are fortified milk, eggs, meat, cheese, liver, halibut fish oil, cream and kidneys. Pro-vitamin A is found in plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). The most common type of pro-vitamin A is beta-carotene, a carotenoid that produces dark pigments in plant foods. Beta-carotene can be found in these brightly colored foods:

-Cantaloupe
-Pink grapefruit
-Apricots
-Carrots
-Pumpkin
-Sweet potatoes
-Winter squash
-Dark green, leafy vegetables

WHY IS OBESITY NOT A GOOD THING???

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. It is defined by body mass index (BMI) and further evaluated in terms of fat distribution via the waist–hip ratio and total cardiovascular risk factors.

Obesity often results from taking in more calories than are burned by exercise and normal daily activities.
Obesity occurs when a person's body mass index is 30 or greater. The main symptom is excessive body fat, which increases the risk of serious health problems.

The mainstay of treatment is lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE ENOUGH SLEEP EACH NIGHT?

A good night’s sleep is incredibly important for your health. In fact, it’s just as important as eating healthy and exercising. Unfortunately, there’s a lot that can interfere with natural sleep patterns. People are now sleeping less than they did in the past, and sleep quality has decreased as well.

A good night’s sleep is also important for helping your body function at its best. Healthy sleep can help your body better regulate blood sugar levels, keep your immune system functioning properly and even improve your heart health by decreasing stress.

Sleep also helps you function effectively throughout the day. A lack of sleep can make you less productive at work, make it take longer to complete even basic tasks and even decrease your reaction time – leading to preventable mistakes.

The NATIONAL SLEEP FOUNDATION recommends:
- 8 to 10 hours for teenagers between 14 to 17 years;
- 7 to 9 hours for people between 18 to 64 years of age;
- 7 to 8 hours for people above 65 years

WHAT IS IMMUNODEFICIENCY?

Immunodeficiency disorders prevent your body from fighting infections and diseases. This type of disorder makes it easier for you to catch viruses and bacterial infections.

Immunodeficiency disorders are either congenital or acquired. A congenital, or primary, disorder is one you were born with. Acquired, or secondary, disorders you get later in life. Acquired disorders are more common than congenital disorders.

Taking Steroids regularly is one of the commonest causes of acquired immunodeficiency.

Your immune system includes the following organs:

-spleen
-tonsils
-bone marrow

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HYPERTENSION(High Blood Pressure) AND PHYSICAL EXERCISE:

Blood pressure is the force that a person’s blood exerts against the walls of their blood vessels. This pressure depends on the resistance of the blood vessels and how hard the heart has to work.

Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. It can lead to severe health complications and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and sometimes death.

Regular physical activity — such as 150 minutes a week, or about 30 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by about 5 to 8 mm Hg if you have high blood pressure. It's important to be consistent because if you stop exercising, your blood pressure can rise again.

If you have elevated blood pressure, exercise can help you avoid developing hypertension. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels.

Some examples of aerobic exercise you may try to lower blood pressure include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing. You can also try high-intensity interval training, which involves alternating short bursts of intense activity with subsequent recovery periods of lighter activity. Strength training also can help reduce blood pressure. Aim to include strength training exercises at least two days a week. Talk to your doctor about developing an exercise program.

WHY YOU HAVE TINGLING SENSATIONS IN THE FEET

Tingling in the hands and feet is often associated with other symptoms like pain, burning, or numbness in the hands and feet.

These type of sensations commonly reflect damage to the nerves in the area (neuropathy); because these are peripheral areas of the body, the term peripheral neuropathy is used to refer to this type of symptom.

Peripheral neuropathy has a number of causes and varies in severity among affected people

- Vitamin deficiency: vitamin B1, B6. B12, E
- Calcium deficiency
- Diabetes,
- Kidney disease
- Liver failure
- Pregnancy

- Toxins (arsenic, thallium, mercury, antifreeze)
- Alcoholism, and
- Infections

It is adviced to always talk to your health care provider once you start noticing this sensation on your feet.

HEALTHY EATING FOR A HEALTHY WEIGHT : Diet and Weight Loss

There are many ways to lose a lot of weight fast.

Healthy eating is one of the best things you can do to lose weight and prevent or control health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.

Low carb(carbohydrate) diets are effective for weight loss and may be easier to stick to than other diets.

Most people lose a significant amount of weight on a low carb diet, but the sp*ed depends on the individual. Low carb diets also improve certain markers of health, such as blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

DEALING WITH DEPRESSION: Understanding Medications

If someone you love has depression, you may wonder how you can help. You may even experience a range of difficult feelings of your own, such as worry, disappointment, and anger. THIS HOW YOU CAN HELP A LOVED ONE WITH DEPRESSION, WHEN IT COMES TO MEDICATIONS.

Many people with depression take medication, if not several. One practical way you can help them is by educating yourself on how the medication works, what the side effects are, and knowing signs to look for that would indicate the treatment is not working or that your loved one has stopped taking a medication (i.e., withdrawal symptoms).

You can also help them remember to refill prescriptions, keep their pills organized, make sure they are taking their medication as prescribed, and reassuring them that they are not "crazy" for needing to take it.

WHY MOST CANCER PATIENTS GET TO DEVELOP ANEMIA.

A significant number of people with cancer also have anemia. Why is it so? What is the relationship between cancer and anemia?

The cause of anemia could be the cancer itself or one of its complications. In general, cancer patients’ red blood cells wear out faster than normal and are not replaced as quickly as they are needed. Cancer can slow down the body’s ability to make new red blood cells or interfere with the body’s ability to used stored iron.

These are the 2 ways that explain cancers associated with anemia:

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIABETES MELLITUS?

Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases that result in high blood sugar. The hormone insulin moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored or used for energy. With diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does make.

Untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs.

There are a few different types of diabetes:

1) Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas, where insulin is made. It’s unclear what causes this attack. About 10 percent of people with diabetes have this type.

2) Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body becomes resistant to insulin, and sugar builds up in your blood. This is very common in obese and physically inactive people.

3) Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar is higher than normal, but it’s not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

4) Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar during pregnancy. Insulin-blocking hormones produced by the placenta cause this type of diabetes. Some women return to normal blood sugar level after delivery but for some women, the high blood sugar persists.

A rare condition called diabetes insipidus is not related to diabetes mellitus, although it has a similar name. It’s a different condition in which your kidneys remove too much fluid from your body and you tend to urinate several times.

WHAT IS IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA AND WHY IS IT COMMON?

Iron-deficiency anemia, the most common form of anemia, is a decrease in the number of red blood cells caused by too little iron.

Without sufficient iron, your body can't produce enough hemoglobin, a substance in red blood cells that makes it possible for them to carry oxygen to the body's tissues. As a result, you may feel weak, tired, and irritable.

About 20% of women, 50% of pregnant women, and 3% of men do not have enough iron in their body.

The solution, in many cases, is to consume more foods high in iron.

The picture below gives examples of iron rich food.
