Italy adds 3.5GW of new PV capacity in January-September 2023
·
·
According to the latest data from Italy's national energy agency GSE (Gestoredei Servizi Energetici), Italy added more than 3.51GW of installed PV capacity in the first nine months of 2023, and by the end of September, its cumulative installed PV capacity reached 28.57GW.

Italy's national energy agency, GSE, reported that between January and September 2023, a total of around 280,000 systems were connected to the Italy grid. At the end of September 2023, Italy's cumulative installed PV capacity amounted to 28.57 GW, with around 8.44 GW of the new capacity coming from rooftop PV, and the remaining 16.61 GW from ground-mounted plants.

In the first nine months of this year, about 46% of the new installed capacity came from residential PV installations, while recent growth has been driven by the commercial and industrial sector (C&I) and utility-scale projects of more than 1MW in size. Regions with the highest share of newly installed capacity include Lombardy Region (649 MW), Veneto Region (486 MW) and Emilia-Romagna Region (361 MW).

Italy is one of the most important PV energy markets in Europe, with great potential and room for growth. Over the past decade, the Italian PV market has experienced rapid growth and development, becoming one of the global leaders in the PV sector. The Italian PV market has benefited from government support and incentives, including favorable tariffs and subsidy policies, which have attracted a large number of investments and projects. In addition, Italy is blessed with favorable natural conditions, including abundant sunlight resources, which makes PV power generation in the country a very promising potential for power generation. Driven by the development of renewable energy and emission reduction targets, PV energy will continue to play an important role in Italy.

France adds 2.2GW of new PV capacity in January-September 2023
·
·
Between January and September 2023, France added a cumulative 2.2GW of installed PV capacity in the first nine months of 2023, according to the latest data from the French Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (ADEME). By the end of September 2023, France's cumulative installed PV capacity reached 19GW.

France's Agency for the Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) reported that about 2,229 MW of new photovoltaic (PV) systems were connected to the French grid in the January-September 2023 period. Compared to the same period last year, France installed 1,923 MW of new PV capacity in January-September 2022, an increase of 15.9% year-on-year, with new PV capacity reaching 2.4 GW for the whole year of 2022, and 3.27 GW of new PV capacity expected in 2023. In the third quarter of this year, 803 MW of new PV systems were deployed in France, compared to 699 MW in the same period last year.

In the first nine months of this year, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Grand Est regions accounted for 68% of all new installed capacity. They are the regions with the highest installed capacity, accounting for more than 72% of France's total cumulative grid-connected generation at the end of June. Meanwhile, the total installed capacity of solar projects applying for grid connection in the queue has increased by 27% since the beginning of the year to 21.4GW, including 5.4GW for which grid connection agreements have been signed.

The picture for the French PV industry is positive, but there are some challenges. Positive aspects include the French government's policy support and long-term planning, which provides a stable policy environment and market expectations for the development of the PV industry. However, the French PV industry also faces a number of challenges. There is still room for improvement in PV power generation technology, and technical challenges related to energy storage and distribution networks need to be overcome. Overall, although the French PV industry is developing positively, it still needs more technological innovation and market development to continue to promote the development of the industry.

OeMAG, the Austrian government's energy agency, has allocated a total of 121,000 incentive contracts for 2GW of solar and 646MWh of storage in 2023 under Austria's Renewable Energy Extension Act (EAG). This compares to a much lower figure in 2022.OeMAG allocated 90,000 rebate contracts for 2,060MW of PV systems and 31,000 rebate contracts for batteries totaling 646MWh.

“Our various sources of financing are the basis for the achievement of the desired climate goals and support Austria's continued progress on the path away from fossil energy," OeMAG said in a statement. To achieve this goal, OeMAG also promotes the development of hydropower, wind power as well as biogas and biomass. Currently, more than 110,000 systems in Austria supply the agency with green electricity. In addition, generation forecasts and schedules are created daily for around 20,000 collective agreements and more than 90,000 market price agreements.

According to the latest statistics released by Austria's PV energy agency OeMAG, Austria's cumulative PV power generation capacity reached 4.2GW by the end of 2022. In 2022, Austria added about 1.4GW of installed PV capacity, with most of the new PV installations benefiting from the support of rebate programs.

Austria has made certain achievements in PV development, with its PV installed capacity growing and a series of policy support measures taken by the government. In particular, the development of distributed PV systems has made an important contribution to Austria's electricity supply. In addition, Austria's PV poverty alleviation programs and technological innovations have also made positive efforts for sustainable development. Although the installed PV capacity in Austria is relatively small, with the increase in demand for renewable energy and the promotion of technological progress, the prospect of PV development in Austria is worth looking forward to.

Recent data from Brazil's energy regulator Aneel shows that installed capacity in Brazil's distributed PV sector (including all PV systems under 5 MW) reached 24 GW by the end of Sept. The passage of the Distributed Generation Law drove a rush to install distributed PV projects in Brazil, spurring growth in installed capacity. Since April, Brazil has deployed an additional 4GW of distributed PV capacity. However, the third quarter of this year saw the first signs of market contraction.

In the first nine months of the year, developers connected around 5.79GW of new distributed generation PV systems to the Brazilian grid, slightly lower than the 5.99GW in the same period last year. The majority of new connections in Brazil in 2023 took place in the first quarter, amounting to 2.75GW, compared to 1.5GW in the same period of 2022.From March to June, a further 1.8GW was added, which is unchanged from the same period in 2022. In the third quarter, 1.2GW was connected, down from 2.4GW in the same period in 2022.

In 2022 and 2023, most of the new distributed PV installations in Brazil will come from residential customers, who contributed 4.5GW of the 7.1GW total capacity in 2022, and 2.8GW of the 5.9GW total capacity by mid-October this year.

The reason for the contraction of the distributed PV market in the third quarter may be due to a number of factors. First, the Brazilian government may have experienced some lag in promoting the distributed PV power sector. Second, the development of distributed PV power generation has been affected by the policy environment and market competition.

However, the potential of the distributed PV power sector in Brazil is still huge. The light conditions across Brazil are ideal for PV power generation, and a large number of residential customers and enterprises will still invest in and adopt distributed PV power generation systems in the future. In order to further promote the development of distributed PV power generation, the Brazilian government will provide more incentives and preferential measures in the future, strengthen market regulation and standardization, and provide a more stable and reliable environment for investors and users, so as to promote the development of renewable energy and reduce the dependence on traditional energy sources.

Global installed PV capacity to reach 1,183GW by 2022
·
·
·
According to the Trends in Photovoltaic Adoption 2023 published by the International Energy Agency (IEA), by the end of 2022, the global solar industry will have more than 1,183GW of installed PV capacity, 65% of which has been added in the past five years.

Last year, global installed solar capacity reached 235.8GW, with countries in the IEA's PVPS program, including the United States, China, Germany, Australia, and several other industry-leading countries, accounting for 78% of the world's cumulative total, or about 927.5GW. By the end of 2022, the cumulative total installed capacity in other markets that are not part of the IEA's PVPS program will be 256GW. Among these countries, India accounts for one-third of the installed capacity with 79 GW, while Vietnam has an installed capacity of about 18.5 GW.

China remains the largest country in terms of installed capacity, with new PV capacity reaching an unprecedented 105.5GW in 2022, with a more balanced contribution from centralized and distributed systems. As of last year, China's total installed capacity reached 414GW, accounting for 45% of global installed capacity.

The U.S. is the second largest PV market, with a cumulative installed capacity of 141.6 GW. However, due to a combination of factors, such as increased emphasis on new domestic manufacturing investments and grid-connected backlogs, the U.S. will see only 21.1 GW of new installed capacity in 2022. although installed capacity in the U.S. utility sector declines from 17 GW to 12.5 GW in 2022, the residential market sees an increase in installed capacity compared to 2021.

India came in third with 18.1GW of installed capacity, up from 13GW the previous year, for a cumulative total of 79.1GW. Brazil installed 9.9GW of solar capacity last year, increasing its total to 23.6GW. Spain added 8.5GW in 2022, bringing its cumulative installed capacity to 29.9GW. the study also looked at all of Europe. In addition to Spain, Germany (7.2GW), Poland (4.9GW) and the Netherlands (3.9GW) are the main markets in Europe.

Going forward, the PV industry is expected to continue its growth momentum. As technology advances and costs fall, PV power generation will become more competitive. Government support and policy promotion will also facilitate the development of the PV industry. Meanwhile, people's increased awareness of environmental protection and demand for renewable energy will further boost the application of PV power generation. It is expected that the PV industry will continue to expand in the future and make a greater contribution to the global energy transition.
