One of the bigger mistakes people make when going into China, not understanding that acceleration of learning is not the same as understanding the market.
Be careful of throwing your principles away just because you get some access to information in the market!
Here I bring up a case that I was thinking about this morning because it's still really relevant.
With the Chinese New Year coming once again, we are once more visiting the topic of boxes and presents! So, wanted to share a bit of a gift box I received. This is an important part of the experience if you are going for the premium market. And for some products, it can feel like the box is more important than the gift itself!
Ningbo seafood time! Ningbo is specialized in what is called 小海鲜 or small seafood. It is a lot of natural flavors with vinegar and salt as dominating flavors. There are fewer and fewer authentic restaurants, as larger chains and shopping mall dining is starting to talk over.
I have started to keep a list of the best seafood restaurants in Ningbo, just to know where to go :D
The craft beer market really has become something interesting here in China. Going from non-existent to now almost every city having its own beer brands. Just a few years ago your options were limited to the major brands that are all light lagers. But now you have a large range! I have tried anything from Coffee-beer to light apple beer, it's a lot of fun and a lot of things going on. I expect this trend to keep growing and keep moving forward! Cannot wait to see what the future hold for beer in China!

Something that everyone says is obvious, but very few really follow. And may get burned on.
Is something I think this picture represents well, as many companies we talk to see the market as a single entity and consider people to generally be the same or very similar. But the variation in culture, lifestyle, and all aspects of life is incredibly big, and the variation is something that always amazes me.
We always recommend that the first thing you should do before starting is to understand the people. It does not matter how much money you put into a marketing entry if you do not know who you are talking to.

Just remembering the mountains in Jiangxi province, got to go there last year. Absolutely amazing place. Hope to get to do some more exploring around China soon. There is still so much left for me to explore here.
The coffee market in China is going through an interesting transformation, not only is coffee growing in popularity, but it is moving towards higher end. Before coffee really was something that only was in instant cheap form, and this is in large still the case. As instant and convenient is dominating, but craft, experience, and enjoyment are growing fast! As the number of cups per year is growing and is now about t 1/100 of European countries, while the cost per cup is growing at a high rate! People are paying more and more for experience and quality, and the consumer is becoming more and more educated about coffee.
I am ready! Launching the week with some Sunday Japanese BBQ and Baijiu! This way I will be ready to conquer the week ahead!
I can't help to feel a bit proud of the team doing their best to try to learn about the Nordic culture of skiing. After a few hours of work we were able to get everyone down the hill 😁 And from my point of view that was a real success!
With the Chinese market exploding outside of the major cities... I wanted to ask, how many cities do you know in China?
I've always felt tea ceremonies are something special and fun experience. But it also shows a important part of marketing to China, you need to create a experience around your product not only putting it on the shelf.
In our never-ending quest to create amazing experiences we visited a packaging factory and got to see the box, Jack Ma sent out. This really innovative packaging, but we are seeing more and more people are moving toward making packaging a part of the experience not just something that holds the goods.

More Vegans in China? 🥬🥦
There are an estimated 15 million vegans in China now! Before these groups were usually connected to religion or culture, but with a health surge from T1 and T2 cities this is becoming a trend.
Having tried a lot of Vegan food in China I have to say I love the approach! Not trying to imitate meat, but creating a totally new taste experience!
With China hitting 24.9% of global retail sales in 2020, we are moving to a point that you need to keep an eye on the China market regardless if you enter or not.

The important part when you are selling beverages in China, especially alcohol is that it's going to be displayed differently. This is from a hotpot shop in Shanghai and you can pick your beverage by yourself. Although it is a mix between behind the bar-style like in Europe, the different way drinks and in fact all goods is displayed in China is very varied. And you should have a packaging and to handle many diffrent situations.
Just a view from my walk last night, there is a strong development here and you are starting to get mixes that you would not have before. 少其小吃 is a cheap fast food store, next to a McDonalds that before was not seen as cheap food. You see more of these established brands branching out to catch an ever-growing middle class.
Sparkling water that just boomed in China! When it first you could not get anyone to drink it... but with aggressive advertisement pushing it to all stores possible. Now there is nowhere you cannot get it.
This advertisement is in central shanghai next to Gucci and LV stores. 😝

Making your drinks pair well with Chinese food is a real art. We are enjoying some blueberry wine with Sichuan hot pot!
Someone that is an expert on this is coca-cola! Who would like to learn more about making your product a part of the Chinese meal!
Eating habits are an important part of the customer experience when it comes to food. Got some Swedish cake for my friends kid and he had no idea what to do, but seem to be enjoying it anyway.
However, most consumers are less flexible and you should adapt to fit into their lifestyle and/or teach how to consume the product. 🎂

Launching a new size of their coca-cola from 500 ml to 680 ml. to be able to include both 6 and 8 in the volume! As number both sound and symbolize different things its important to use some and keep away from other.
