JGC Basrah Refinery Upgrading Project has successfully completed, paving the way for a low-carbon path in future energy supply

On the 12th, the completion ceremony of the JGC Basrah Refinery Upgrading Project, undertaken by Morimatsu, took place at the Morimatsu Nantong Plant. JGC's Senior Executive Vice President / Basrah Project Sponsor, Mr. Satoshi Sato, JGC Executive Officer / Basrah Project Director, Mr. Nobuyoshi Mizutani, Morimatsu Group President Mr. Nishimatsu Koei, Morimatsu Group Senior Vice President / General Manager of Morimatsu (Jiangsu) Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., Mr. Sheng Ye, among others, gathered to witness the successful completion of this project.

The upgrading project of JGC's Basrah Refinery, from 151 pressure vessels to 99 modules, encompassing over 23,000 tons in total, established a solid foundation for successful delivery with Morimatsu's internationally advanced smart platform system and the dedication of a 2,000-strong highly skilled construction team. Upon implementation, the project will further enhance the production capacity of the Basrah Refinery in Iraq, improving the quality of refined products, thereby holding significant importance for environmental protection and efficient energy utilization. Simultaneously, the smooth delivery of the project underscores Morimatsu's top-notch manufacturing capabilities in the industry.

Mr. Nishimatsu Koei, President of Morimatsu Group, expressed in his address that the longstanding collaboration between JGC and Morimatsu acknowledges the close cooperation and concerted efforts during the project implementation. He emphasized the significance of this project's successful completion in reflecting the importance of international cooperation and innovative technology in addressing global energy challenges. On December 1st, 2023, Morimatsu (Jiangsu) Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Morimatsu Heavy Industry") and Sino-Korea Green New Material (Jiangsu) Limited (hereinafter referred to as "Sino-Korea Green") officially signed a contract for the core equipment of their EAA Phase I factory project. This signifies a significant milestone in the cooperation between two parties, as well as a breakthrough for Morimatsu in the field of ultra-high pressure equipment.

Sino-Korea Green New Material (Jiangsu) Limited is a joint venture established by South Korea's SK Innovation and Satellite Chemical, dedicated to the construction and operation of the EAA (Ethylene Acrylic Acid Copolymer) project. The current project construction scale is 40,000 tons per year and is located in the national petrochemical industry base in Lianyungang City. EAA is produced by the high-temperature and high-pressure free radical polymerization of ethylene and acrylic acid, and it has excellent heat sealing and tear resistance properties. It can effectively isolate air and water v***r and has outstanding bonding capabilities with metals, glass, etc. It is applied in various fields such as electric vehicle battery electrodes and separators, food, pharmaceutical packaging, photovoltaics, wire and cable, steel coatings, etc.
The production process of EAA presents significant challenges due to the high-temperature and ultra-high pressure conditions. The working pressure of the production equipment can reach several hundred megapascals (thousands of atmospheres), demanding strict requirements in terms of design analysis capabilities, material procurement and management capabilities, production and processing capabilities, and quality control capabilities for equipment suppliers. Morimatsu Heavy Industry's ultra-high pressure equipment has a maximum design pressure of 260 MPa, setting a historical record for pressure vessel manufacturers in China and even Asia.

Morimatsu Heavy Industry has always been driven by customer needs and a commitment to continuous innovation. With two major manufacturing bases in Shanghai and Jiangsu, it is one of the few manufacturing companies in China that holds both A6 and U3 certifications. The company has gained recognition from domestic and international authoritative institutions in the field of ultra-high pressure. On November 15th, 2023, Wanhua Chemical’s Meishan facility’s automatic roller hearth kiln (RHK) project ceremony was grandly held at our Nantong Plant. This event signifies a new milestone in our deep collaboration with Wanhua Chemical in the lithium-ion battery field, expanding new areas and directions of cooperation for both parties.

The roller hearth kiln (RHK) is the core equipment for calcining ternary cathode materials, with various components such as the kiln body, double gates, exchange chamber, exhaust piping, automatic feeding system, drive system and automated temperature control system. The calcination process for ternary materials has two stages: thermal decomposition of lithium sources and ternary precursors in the heating zone and high-temperature solid-phase reaction in the constant temperature zone. Calcination temperature, time, atmosphere and material loading per bowl are key parameters affecting the performance of ternary materials during calcination. It took more than 300 days and nights of relentless effort to develop and manufacture this new production line, which reflects Wanhua Chemical’s deep trust in Morimatsu, exceptional collaboration among the R&D teams and the support of Korean technology, all contributing to this successful collaborative framework.

The automatic roller hearth kiln (RHK) for ternary cathode materials is an innovative outcome of our cooperation with Wanhua in the lithium-ion battery field. We jointly developed some of this equipment’s technology with Wanhua, aiming to advance the application and development of new kiln furnace technologies and inject fresh vitality into the lithium-ion battery industry. The successful delivery of this project signifies our relentless pursuit of technology and innovation with Wanhua and lays a solid foundation for our deepened cooperation in the field of lithium-ion battery furnaces.

Pengerang, 7 November 2023 – Morimatsu International Holdings Company Limited and DIALOG Group Berhad today held the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of their joint venture company, Morimatsu DIALOG (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. facilities in Pengerang, Johor Darul Ta’zim, with an investment value of approximately USD 60 million to further grow the one-stop engineering and fabrication services to serve both local and international customers.

The ceremony was officiated by the Menteri Besar of Johor YAB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Mr. Hirotaka Kawashima, Executive Director of Morimatsu International Holdings Company Limited, and Tan Sri Dr. Ngau Boon Keat, Executive Chairman of DIALOG Group Berhad. With the expansion estimated to be completed progressively by the first quarter of 2025, the 18,245 m2 facility will mainly consist of module production workshops equipped with modern workplace amenities and infrastructure. This will support Morimatsu DIALOG in meeting the demands and opportunities in the region and beyond while contributing more opportunities to the state’s job market. In his speech, Johor Menteri Besar YAB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said, “This newly expanded facility will be able to support the overall growth of Pengerang and continue to be a preferred investment destination. This is in line with our wish to attract high-quality and value-adding investments into the State.” “I am also happy to note the newly expanded facility will create job opportunities with a projected additional employment of approximately 500, bringing the total number of manpower to 650,” added Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

PGT is a South Korean company that manufactures precision chemical products such as raw material medicines, cosmetic additives and special paper dyes. In 2022, it achieved sales of 40.1 billion won and profits of 3.4 billion won. As early as April of last year, they attracted a “Series C” investment of 36.2 billion won and signed a 95 billion won lithium battery electrolyte production investment agreement with Jeollabuk-do·Gunsan City in January this year.

In August 2022, PGT began contacting Morimatsu Heavy Industry. Building a LiPF6 unit overseas coincided with Morimatsu’s development strategy. After several negotiations and 10 months of in-depth research and consultation, the contract was finally signed smoothly. At the signing ceremony, Morimatsu Heavy Industry CEO Sheng Ye said that Morimatsu and PGT are not only the relationship between suppliers and owners, but also long-term development partners. We hope that our relationship will continue to develop and jointly promote the development and progress of the power battery industry globally.

With the continuous expansion of the power battery market and the maturity of production technology routes, Morimatsu Heavy Industry relies on its experience and advantages in continuous process design of chemical industry products to develop continuous production processes for products such as lithium hexafluorophosphate and bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide lithium. Morimatsu has a long history of cooperation with JGC and this project is the largest refinery project order received from JGC in Morimatsu's history, marking a major milestone. The project includes 151 units of various types of pressure vessels, 99 modules (total tonnage of approximately 23,000+ tons). The first batch of modules are planned to be delivered one after another from the end of May 2023.

The upgrading of the Basrah refinery will add a new catalytic cracking unit with a processing capacity of 34,500 barrels per day, a reduced-pressure distillation unit with a processing capacity of 55,000 barrels per day and a diesel desulfurization unit with a processing capacity of 40,000 barrels per day on the land near the existing Basrah refinery plant, which will expand the refinery's capacity while also further improving the quality of refined products, and by narrowing the gap between the supply and demand of Iraq's domestic petroleum products In addition, the country's dependence on imported petrochemicals is being continuously reduced. In addition, the oil products produced by the modern refinery will meet international environmental standards, which will have a significant impact on environmental protection and energy utilization in the long run. The project will also lead the structural optimization and capacity adjustment of Iraq's refining industry, and put it on the fast track of prosperous development of industrial modernization, digitalization and advancement.

As a provider of modular solutions for multiple industries, Morimatsu Heavy Industry has invested large number of personnel in the peak period of the project, and adopted the advanced international digital intelligent platform system for the whole process of construction and project management. 01 100以上のスマート工場の建設が深く発展
スマート工場はデジタル化、ネットワーキング、インテリジェンスなどの新技術を総合的に応用し、製品の開発と設計、生産製造、倉庫保管と物流、および運用とメンテナンスサービスなどの段階と深く融合し、生産の機械化、プロセス自動化と管理情報化の特徴を備えている無人化あるいは少人化の新型工場である(工場、生産ライン)。

Empower Green Energy Industry to Write A New Chapter of Morimatsu Modular Solution for A Leading Biofuel Company in Canada

At the beginning of 2023, Morimatsu (Jiangsu) Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. made a good start. A leading renewable chemical and biofuel technology company in Canada awarded Morimatsu the contract for modular bioethanol fuel pant in Quebec, Canada.

The plant utilizes green hydrogen and oxygen produced by electrolysis to convert excess hydropower capacity of Quebec into the value-added biofuels and recycled chemicals. The technology company’s proprietary thermochemical process enable the carbon and hydrogen rich in unrecyclable wastes and wood wastes that are landfilled or incinerated to be recycled. In addition to giving “a second life” to wastes, the plant will increase the supply of alternative fuels to boost the production of biofuels in Quebec, thus enhancing its leadership in renewable energy and innovation. After the completion of the project, the plant will be capable of processing 200,000 ton of unrecyclable wastes and wood wastes and produce about 125 million liters of biofuels and renewable chemicals.

Since 2017, Morimatsu has been working with the technology company and awarded multiple key equipment orders for core process devices, and has heavily involved in pre-design phase of the project, assisting the client in completing plant design and making final investment decisions through Morimatsu's extensive international modular project design and construction experience. Thanks to long-term communication and cooperation between project teams of both sides, the client highly fully recognized Morimatsu’s project implementation capability and rich international project experience, and finally decided to award Morimatsu the most important contract for the whole plant modular assembly of the entire project.

The project in Quebec is also the first demonstration device of the advanced biofuel production technology that is planned to be promoted on a commercial scale worldwide by the company. The client expects to build a long-term global strategic partnership with Morimatsu based on the successful delivery of this flagship project. In addition to the winning project, the technology company invests in new projects in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. Its proprietary advanced clean chemistry technology fits perfectly with the current global concerns of carbon emission, renewable chemicals and energy, and contributes to achieving carbon emission peaking and carbon neutrality as soon as practicable through industrial applications in related fields.

実践を通して本当の知識を取り、真実を求め実務に励む
ー2023 森松大学リーンベンチマークセミナー

森松はこれまで5S管理及び提案改善の実践と文化構築に取り組んできたが、事業規模の継続的な拡大及び各生産拠点の相次ぐ操業に伴い、さらに5S管理手段と提案改善活動を通じて、生産段階における8つの無駄を低減する必要がある。新年度の着工にあたり、森松大学は課外リーン生産、実地研修課程を実施した。

「リーン生産」は米国の生産管理専門家が長期にわたり日本のトヨタ自動車の生産管理を研究してまとめた生産方式であり、現在の世界で最も先進的で競争力のある生産方式であり、基本思想は人間本位であり、企業が改善を通じて、すべての浪費現象を根絶し、最小の投入で最大の利益を生み出し、企業製品の品質を高め、コストを下げ、利益を増やし、企業のコア競争力を高める。

今回の課外研修の目的:
1. ベンチマーク企業を見学し、改善の方法について洞察する
2.5Sの改善と管理レベルの向上により、ユーザーにとってより大きな価値を創造する
3. リーンマインドと管理ツールを学び、自分を改善し続ける

森松大学の学員はある新エネルギー車企業の商業化生産ラインを実地見学した。同社は中国で最も自動化されたプル型の高柔軟性生産ラインを持ち、すでに「ブラックライトワークショップ」の生産モードを実現し、自動化、知能化、少人化、高度自動化溶接の特徴を持ち、同時に効率的な目視化管理とSPSロジスティクスモードを備えており、各プロセスの接続に間違いがない。

研修道場はトヨタ生産モードの真髄であり、リーン研修道場は本物のオリジナルのトヨタシミュレーション道場を復元し、道場とは何か、道場の役割を認識した。 その中で、道場研修課程は、「優良現場管理制度」、「TPS制度」、「TQM制度」、「TPM制度」の大きく4つの制度に分けられ、理論と実践を結合する方式を通じて、企業が真にリーンオフを実現し、自主的に改善を維持できる人材を育成するとともに、管理ツール及び安全システム方法論を紹介した。

最後に、2 つの講義は、訪問から得られた成果を統合および拡大し、リーン生産方式に対して深いコミュニケーションと交流を行い、トヨタ生産方式の紹介を通じて、企業のリーン転換変革には、現状の認識、ベンチマークの検索、方法の把握 , 誤解の識別、障害の克服、行動を実行する必要があることを認識した。

今回の課外見学はすでに終了し、学生たちは短い時間の中で収穫が豊かで、本から得た知識は簡単であり、物事の根本や道理の本質を認識するには、自分自身の実践を用い、発見を探求しなければならない、絶えず着地実践を改善する。森松の学生たちはそれぞれの業務で活躍し、リーン生産のプロセスから森松の特徴を備えた発展路線を創造し、業界のベンチマークになると信じている。

Morimatsu Dialog (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. provided nine sets of stainless steel SB & WB Pressure Vessels for an internationally renowned fine chemical company and delivered successfully on the 22nd November 2022.

The product delivered this time is 3m in diameter, 11m in height, and 63tons in weight. During the ex*****on of this first project in Morimatsu Dialog (Malaysia) Plant, the team formed efficiently in a short period of time, quickly integrated the international supply chain, and ensured quality and quantity in terms of design, procurement, manufacturing, logistics and on-site support. The tasks of each stage were successfully completed and was finally delivered on schedule.

The successful delivery of the first project of Morimatsu Dialog marks a substantial milestone for Morimatsu International's overseas development. Based in Southeast Asia, serving to North America, Middle East, Morimatsu Dialog will further strengthen its ability to provide customers with one-stop solution from design, procurement, construction to delivery, and meet the needs of core equipment and engineering solutions in related countries and various industries (EV battery raw materials, bio-pharmaceuticals, energy and chemical industries, etc.)

Adhering to the market strategy of both internal and external consideration and balanced development, Morimatsu will continue to strengthen the international teams, build a safe and reliable transnational supply chain and expand the construction base in Malaysia as planned, improve the independent function of overseas production capacity, and provide global customers with more diverse service and product options.

Morimatsu Dialog (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. is a subsidiary company of Morimatsu International Holdings Limited, jointly established by Morimatsu and Dialog Fabricators Sdn Bhd on September 14, 2021, and has been established at the end of June 2022. It was officially put into operation in July 2022.

Successful Delivery of Super Large Molten Salt Reactor

The molten salt reactor provided by Morimatsu is for a well-known domestic enterprise was successfully delivered on September 20, 2022.

The molten salt reactor is a knid of acrolein reactor, which is used to oxidize propylene to acrolein, and is the core reactor for the raw materials of methionine. The molten salt reactor delivered has a diameter of 8m, total height of 18m, 32,000 heat exchange tubes, and weight of 600t.

Covestro's Lotus Project Product Release was held in Morimatsu Nantong Plant

"Concentrating the Recycle, Creating the Sustainable Future", on the morning of October 18th, the product release of Covestro's Lotus project was grandly held at Morimatsu Nantong Plant. Mr. Gao Zuomin, Director of Asia-Pacific Engineering Department of Covestro, Ms. Luo Wen, Director of Asia-Pacific Project Procurement of Covestro, Mr. Sheng Ye, General Manager of Morimatsu, and Mr. Meng Lei, Deputy General Manager of Morimatsu, total 50 people attended the event.

The waterborne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) production plant project is the first modular facility among all Covestro production bases around the world. Morimatsu participated in the modular feasibility study, modular conceptual design and basic design of the project, marking new strategic cooperation between Covestro and Morimatsu.

The meeting started with a speech by Mr. Sheng Ye, GM of Morimatsu. On behalf of Morimatsu, Mr. Sheng Ye extended a warm welcome to the guests present. In his speech, Mr. Sheng Ye said that Morimatus as the creator of the PUD Lotus modular facility, look forward to deeper cooperation with Covestro in the future. Mr. Gao Zuomin, Director of Covestro's Asia-Pacific Engineering Department, delivered a speech to express his gratitude to Morimatsu for the thoughtful arrangement. He expressed that he was of great honor to be invited with Covestro engineering project team to Morimatsu Nantong Plant to visit the installation and manufacturing of the Lotus Project, and to unveil the modular facility.

Then, Mr. He Wenxing, Director of the Module Technology Department of Morimatsu, presented the feasibility study, detailed design, manufacturing and factory testing process of the PUD Lotus project. He also reported the design concept, technical difficulties and solutions and provided suggestions for the future intelligent operation and maintenance of the modular facility.

The successful delivery of this project will benefit Covestro by satisfying the growing need for more environmentally friendly coatings and adhesives in global market, further enhancing the scale and strength of Covestro's integrated base in Shanghai, and contributing to high quality and sustainable development in multiple markets. Morimatsu provided the super-large HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leaching) autoclave for Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co., Ltd. on June 14, 2022. HPAL autoclave is the core equipment for manufacturing raw materials in the upstream of EV battery industry.

This project invested by Huayou is located in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The autoclave delivered by Morimatsu has a diameter of more than 5.9 meters and a total length of 45 meters. This equipment is not only super thick and heavy, but also has a complex structure, which has created unprecedented challenges for design, manufacturing, inspection and heat treatment. Morimatsu team worked with the Huayou project team to overcome difficulties, and finally successfully achieved the smooth delivery of the first autoclave. Morimatsu made the most of its vast experience and once again proved it has strong technical capabilities.
