Sabrina’s POV
“You look perfect, dear.”
The sound of my dad’s compliment makes me smile at my own reflection in the mirror. My blonde hair is up in elaborate braids, and I put makeup on my face for the first time ever. Dad is right. I do look perfect. My blue eyes twinkle with joy.
And how can they not? Tonight is my eighteenth birthday.
Tonight is also the night where Klaus, the Alpha heir of the Dark Howl Pack, will claim me as his Luna.
“Thank you, Dad,” I beam at him, dabbing on more lipstick. “I want things to be perfect when I go join the Moonshine Ceremony.”
Mom smiles at me and straightens my dress as I face my parents. I still have an hour to go but I want to go out now and get claimed by Klaus.
It’s the tradition for werewolves to find their mates when they turn eighteen, but Klaus and I already had a connection since we were kids. He’s from the leading family and I had to keep my distance then, but we knew early on that we were mates. He’s distant by default, though, but maybe things will change between us.
And everything will be official tonight.
“Do you think he will propose to me?” I ask suddenly.
Dad chokes on his drink. Mom drops the clothes in her hand. I giggle at their reaction, but I can’t help but voice out all the happy thoughts in my head.
“Well, we would be married someday, I’m sure--”
“Um, Sabrina?”
I ignore Dad. “Probably when Alpha Amos passes down the title to him, right? That’s usually when Alpha’s marry their mates--”
“Sabrina, he is--”
“Mom, I know it’s too soon but think about it. Your daughter is going to be the Luna and--”
“Sabrina.”
This time, the voice makes me stop talking. I whip around and my heart almost stops. Standing by the door of my bedroom is no other than Klaus.
He’s already in a suit for tonight’s event. His black hair is slicked back, drawing more attention to his handsome face, particularly his golden eyes. My heart flutters at the sight of him and I smile as wide as I can, but he just looks at my parents and says, “Please, Mr. and Mrs. Carver, give us a moment to talk.”
Mom and Dad exchange glances and bow, nodding at me before exiting the room.
Once alone, I open my arms to invite Klaus for a hug, but he doesn’t move. “Klaus? What’s wrong?”
He turns his cool gaze on me. “I can’t take you as my Luna.”
My blood turns cold. Everything seems to have gone black for a moment. I try to smile and play it off as a joke, but he’s as serious as ever. “But . . . Klaus, we are mates--”
“No,” he simply stated, cutting me off with a calm look.
For some reason, his calm and defeated gaze makes me feel worse than I already do. I would have preferred it if he screamed at me or pushed me. I don’t think I can bear the disappointment emanating from him, especially since I don’t understand.
“Tell me why, then,” I urge him, my desperation making my voice crack. “We’ve always been close. We knew we were mates for four years, Klaus. You can’t just take it back. Did your dad--”
“He has nothing to do with this,” Klaus states, and once again I’m chilled by his tone. “Yes, I knew for four years that we were mates. I tried to understand, believe me. I hoped I was wrong, but that didn’t mean I knew everything about you, about who you are. About what you are.”
I step closer to him. “What am I, then?”
His jaw clenches. “It’s best if you ask your parents or your brother Dylan that question. I’m in no place to answer. Just accept the rejection and I shall let this go.”
“No.” I shake my head, blinking hard to keep my tears at bay. “You’re the one who came here. You explain it to me!”
Klaus stares at me as though considering it, but then he nods briefly and turned around. “Good night, Sabrina.”
That’s it for me, the breaking point. The pain in my chest reaches its crescendo, and I find myself in a daze, marching towards him and pulling him by the arm. He tries to pry my hand off but I hold on and make him face me.
“Look at me and tell me what is going on,” I demand. “Tell me why you’re . . . why you’re rejecting me.”
“I reject you. . . .” Klaus pauses meaningfully. “Because you’re human.”
My hand falls to my side. “What?”
“Mr. and Mrs. Carver found you in a forest because your real parents have abandoned you,” he says simply, his voice emotionless. Careless. “For four years, I have doubted this. I observed you. And I hoped against hope that I was wrong, but I wasn’t. You are a human, and I can never have a human mate.”
Tears flow down my cheeks. I swallow hard, looking at him imploringly, struggling to even beg him to stay. I try to take his hand, but he turns away, his face set.
“But . . . I can make things work.” I feel hot. Delirious. “I can still be a good mate to you. I can still be your partner--”
“You don’t understand,” he interrupts. “I need a Luna more than I need a mate. My father is counting on me to find someone strong and . . . fitting for the title. I’m sorry, Sabrina.”
My heart breaks. One quick snap. I watch in complete utter silence as he walks out of my room and leaves me lying on the floor. My entire body is numb. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how it happened. . . .
He called me a human.
He said my real parents tossed me out.
But Mom and Dad are my real parents. They have to be.
I’m shaking all over. I’m half expecting everything to be a dream, but the sudden burst of happy sounds from outside tells me that everything that happened is real.
Everything seems to be in slow motion as I get up, but then the door opens and my parents enter. My chest tightens. I don’t even know if I should call them that.
“Sabrina?” Mom rushes towards me and touches my face. “We . . . we heard what happened and we want to explain--”
I jerk away from her touch. “So you mean to say that what Klaus said is true? I’m human and you’re not my real parents?”
The look of shame on their faces is enough to tell me the truth.
“So I’m not your child?” I ask them in a quivering voice. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you are ours!” Dad insists. He tries to hold me. “You are ours, Sabrina, we don’t care what everyone thinks!”
That draws the line for me. I push past them and leave my room, our house, and head into the woods. The sounds and the lights from the ceremony are still reaching me, and for a second I think about making my way there and announcing to everyone how Klaus treated me.
Then again, who will take my word against his?
I should just count myself lucky that he didn’t reject me publicly.
But he still broke my heart, and he did it by simply stating a simple fact: I’m a human and I’ve been lied to my entire life.
And that explains a lot.
I don’t have a wolf. I’ve always been told that I would eventually hear a voice in my head and take on its form, but that never came to me. No wonder trainings are useless for me. No wonder I can never keep up with Klaus and his group, even with my friends.
I never belonged here, and Klaus made that clear.
With tears flooding my eyes, I run as fast as I can, scaling low hills and pushing away low-hanging branches. I know I have to stop eventually because this part of the woods leads to a cliff, but I don’t stop until I reach the edge.
Maybe it would be better if I just leave it all.
Mom and Dad won’t have to deal with the embarrassment of having a human, rejected child. My friends won’t have to be laughed at for being associated with me.
And I won’t have to deal with the pain of knowing that Klaus never loved me. He just wants a strong, respectable Luna.
I stare at the yawning emptiness beyond the edge of the cliff, hearing it calling to me. Feeling it pulling me.
So I take a deep breath and jump.
Klaus’s POV
It was the right thing to do, rejecting Sabrina. But why does it feel like I made a huge mistake?
I begin to second-guess myself the moment I step out of her room. A part of me wants to go back and apologize more, but a bigger part of me is relieved that the job is done. I’ve been dreading this night since I found out, but I can’t have it hovering above me any longer, so I just walk back to our palace.
“Master Klaus,” our maids greet as I enter the doors, and I really wish they didn’t do that because that alerts my dad.
My dad. The great Alpha Amos.
“Klaus,” he calls out to me, appearing at the hallway. He’s also in his suit but his hair looks undone yet. The scar on his left eyebrow is shining under the light. “Where have you been? I was looking for you.”
“What for?” I ask. “I was just out to check the ceremony.”
He and I always had a strained relationship. He wants a strong heir, and a strong Luna to come with it. That is exactly why I had to break it off with Sabrina. He would consider me an outcast if he finds out that my mate is a mere human.
I might not even be crowned as the next Alpha.
Alpha Amos nods and scans me as though trying to detect a lie, but I’m used to this scrutiny so I just stand straight and meet his eyes.
“Well, that is what I wanted to talk to you about, checking the crowd for the ceremony,” he says. “Have you found your mate yet? Tonight should be the night.”
That makes me freeze. Once again my mind flies to the scene where I rejected Sabrina. The hurt in her eyes seems to be embedded in my mind.
“I don’t know her yet,” I tell Dad.
What a lie. I knew from the beginning that Sabrina is my mate before we were even teenagers
But as we grew older, I began to have some doubts.
Every training, she always gets injured. She can’t heal herself. She can’t fight. Her strength and her endurance are almost nonexistent. She can’t outrun any of us, and her parents are supposed to be Betas.
Because of that, I was pushed to observe and investigate. Four years ago, I found out that she was human.
It was a night of camping in the seaside of San Jose. It was she and I, and a couple of our friends. It was supposed to be a fun night filled with laughter and stories around a fire, but then Rogues attacked.
All of us were forced to take on our wolf forms and fight back. We were all supposed to have our wolves then. All of us, except Sabrina, who stood there in fright and almost got mauled by a Rogue because she just wasn’t able to save herself.
And that event was what prompted me to look more closely at her. I found out that her Beta parents just adopted her after finding her in the woods as a baby.
My father will disown me if he found out that that weak orphan is my mate.
I need a mate like my mom. Strong, ferocious, can defend an entire pack all by herself without relying on her Alpha.
Sabrina just isn’t that person.
“I will talk to all the young women in the ceremony tonight, don’t worry,” I assure Alpha Amos, and he smiles tightly at me.
“Well then, if you wish to do that, it would be best to start early,” he tells me, taking my arm and leading me towards the door.
Together, we go out into the courtyard where the ceremony is happening. The moon is already up and bright above us, and my peers are all claiming their mates by asking them for a dance. Still, there are a handful of boys and girls who are standing in the sides, looking confused.
But of course, once we enter, all the girls perk up. They all wave and flash me winks, which I respond to with a polite bow, but my dad shakes his head.
“You can’t expect to find someone in that attitude of yours. Go talk to them.”
With that, he pushes me into a crowd of girls. I force a smile on my face and try to listen as they introduce themselves to me, but I can’t shake off the unsettling feeling in my stomach.
And it doesn’t take me long to find out why I’m feeling like that.
I look up and see Mr. and Mrs. Carver in the distance, both with desperate looks, searching the courtyard. Our eyes meet, and something tells me that things aren’t right.
“Excuse me, ladies,” I say, then I hurry towards them.
“We can’t find her, Master,” Mrs. Carver tells me almost pleadingly. “We’ve been searching the whole house and the whole pack, but we haven’t found her.”
I open my mouth to say something, but then I see Alpha Amos appearing at my side. “What’s wrong?” he asks the couple.
“Our daughter is missing, Alpha.”
My dad nods, and wasting no time, he turns to the crowd and announces, “Has anyone seen Sabrina Carver?” When no one responds, he claps his hands together for attention. “Gather in groups. We shall sweep the woods and find out where the young lady is. There have been rumors about Rogues, so be vigilant.”
My skin grows cold. Rogues? Around this pack? Why haven’t I heard about this before?
I want to confront dad about this, but we have no time for that. Instead, I use the trace of Sabrina’s scent on my suit to follow my own path into the woods.
The others have scattered in groups, and although I know I should be there for her parents, I opt to search alone to avoid any kind of suspicion. I don’t want anyone to find out that Sabrina is my mate.
But this grows to be more and more irrelevant as the night wears on.
Hours and hours. I spend all my time and sharpen my senses to get even a small trace of her, but the path I’m following is faint, almost gone.
With my heart sinking lower every moment, I continue my search until I find the end of her scent at the cliff.
And there at the very edge, caught in one of the sharp shards of stone, is a sliver of blue fabric.
The fabric of the dress Sabrina wore tonight.
No. This can't be.
I blink a couple of times to make sure I'm seeing the fabric correctly. My pulse is racing so fast that I have to pant just to catch my breath. I want to reach down and take the strip of fabric, but it's too far down.
Which only means one thing.
Sabrina jumped off this cliff.
My hands start to shake. I fall to my knees, the pain in my chest too much to bear.
This is all my fault. She jumped because I didn't take it easy. Because I didn't bother to explain. I just told her what I thought she needed to hear, with no regard to her feelings. Even though she's been my friend for the longest time. Even though she's my mate.
But maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe she's still here somewhere and my human form isn't doing its best in tracking her scent.
I step away from the cliff and take a deep breath, channeling my wolf, Thunder. Slowly, he takes over, transforming my body into a majestic black wolf with golden eyes.
We can track scents better as wolves, and we have the ability to know where the scents end. I sniff around in my wolf form, trying to track the scent, and it goes all the way down to the bottom of the cliff.
"She's gone," Thunder whispers in my head. "I can't smell her scent any farther. She's dead."
"She can't be. . . ."
Pain racks up my body in the most intense way I never knew before. I want to let it out and scream at the top of my lungs, but the thing that escapes my lips is a long and mournful howl.
Soon enough, the whole forest is echoing with howls. They heard my message and they know now that we have lost a member.
But it’s incomparable to the pain I have knowing I lost my mate.
Heavy footfalls suddenly appear behind me. I turn around and immediately recognize the wolf form of Sabrina’s brother, Mr. and Mrs. Carver’s real son, Dylan. He doesn’t speak to me, but I can feel his pain.
Mr. and Mrs. Carver soon appear as well, including Sabrina’s friends, Cindy and Riley. They all look at me for answers, but I can only look at the cliff to signal what they probably already know.
“Is the girl nowhere to be found?”
The booming authoritative voice shakes up the forest. It’s Alpha Amos. He is in his human form, but everyone bows at his presence.
“Everyone, please return to your homes for safety,” he announces. “We will be updating you about the status of Sabrina Carver.”
Everybody leaves, their footsteps shaking the ground until I’m left standing face to face with my father.
“Are you sure you don’t know what happened to this girl?” he asks in a low voice.
I shift back into my human form. “No. I have no clue.”
“Very well.” Alpha Amos stares at me meaningfully. “We should find Sabrina Carver if we are not to delay your crowning ceremony. If not, I’m afraid you will have to wait.”
* * *
Sabrina’s POV
The moment my feet leave the ground, I feel free. Free from bad thoughts. Free from pain.
All I can feel is the rushing wind in my ears as gravity takes hold of me and begins to pull me down. I close my eyes, waiting for the thud and the greatest pain that will end it all. I feel myself getting closer and closer to the water. I wait for the impact. Any moment now. . . .
But the impact doesn’t come.
Splash. My body sinks into the bottom of the river as I expected, but I feel no type of pain. It seems that my body isn’t even here. I just hear the water splashing around me, and I gasp, which causes the water to pool in my mouth.
Maybe this is how I’m going to die. Not by the impact of falling, but by drowning.
But I do have to wonder why I wasn’t hurt by falling at all.
Still, that’s something I don’t have to worry about now. The raging waters in this river will surely finish the job.
Another massive push from the water hits my body and pushes me farther under. My feet are now touching the riverbed. I let go and let myself get carried under, but then a strange wave hits and suddenly I’m starting to float.
What’s happening? Why am I being carried to the surface?
Panic seizes me and I start to thrash around, but that only propels me closer to the surface of the water until I find myself washed on the side of the river.
I cough, letting all the murky water flow out of me. I look around and find that I’m so far away from camp. I don’t even know where I am now.
But I’m still alive.
Shaking my head and spitting out the rest of the dirty water, I lift myself on the ground and start to head to the woods, but then I stop in my tracks.
There are men approaching me. I can hear more behind me, at the other side of the river, and even farther inland. It seems that they are all hiding behind the big trees, scouting, and it just so happened that they found me. I can see their eyes glinting under the moonlight, smart and sharp.
My legs are jelly. I don’t know what to do. I want to run or maybe jump back in the river and get carried by the current, but I know that one wrong move will get me in trouble.
Swallowing hard even with the grit in my mouth, I raise my hands in surrender. But before I can even lift my arms, the men before me bust out of the woods and press their spears against my neck.
“NO!” I yell in fright. “Please don’t kill me!”
“Silence, Rogue!” the man in front commands. “What are you doing in our territory?”
“Wh-what?” I stammer. “No, you must be mistaken. I’m not a Rogue, I just fell into the river. Please, please don’t hurt me. I can go. I’ll leave, please. . . .”
That doesn’t take any effect. They press the spears closer, and I can feel the cold tip poking at my skin, an ounce of force away from decapitating me.
The man huffs, lighting up a torch and bringing it close to examine my face. I flinch and close my eyes because of the sudden brightness. I hear him gasp.
“This is impossible,” he whispers, then he turns to the other warriors. “Lower your weapons!”
The spears get brought away from my neck, and relief floods me. I open my eyes to see if they backed away, but I only end up face to face with the man in the middle.
And he looks astounded. Almost horrified. I want to ask what’s wrong but I don’t want to risk it.
He turns back to his men. “Call the King. Tell them we found her.”
“Found who?” I blurt out, my fear coming back in full force. “Who?”
He doesn’t say anything, but one of them runs as fast as he can. I’m shivering full on now, and something strange is happening with my body. I don’t know if it’s just the fear, but I feel feverish and anxious, like something horrible is about to happen.
I step back, hoping to get carried down by the river but the man grabs my arm and puts me in place. I whimper, opening my mouth to plead with him to let me go, but then a really tall man suddenly bursts out of the clearing. His face gets illuminated by the fire.
And my heart stops.
He looks like . . . me.
Same blond hair. Same blue eyes. Even the same frown line between our eyebrows.
I start to shake in my spot. My body is starting to get weak. Am I dreaming? Has this day finally taken its toll on me and given me hallucinations?
Shaking from head to toe, I back away from him. He holds out his hand and signals the men to stay behind, but he himself continues to walk closer to me.
“Leave me alone,” I tell him, but my voice is so shaky that it’s no use. Nausea is rising up my throat and my vision is starting to spin. “Stay back and don’t come any closer.”
He doesn’t listen to me. He keeps getting closer. “Don’t fret. I will never hurt you. I’m just happy I finally found you. The scent . . . it tells me everything I need to know. You finally made it back to me.”
“No.” Black spots begin to dance in my eyes. I stumble back, and a wave of weakness overcomes my body. “I don’t. . . .”
The rest of my words vanish when my entire body goes slack. I’m fainting, and I know I will lose any kind of sensation any second now.
But the last thing I feel is the man catching me.
“Welcome home,” he whispers. “My daughter.”

"Bethany, Beth wake up baby!"
"Momma, what's wrong?"
"Rogues, we're under attack. I need you to take Bella to the safe room and don't come out until I come and get you, ok? Promise me you won't come out until it's safe Beth!"
"Ok momma, I won't I promise!"
"Good girl, now run and don't stop, protect Bella. I love you, Bethany."
"I love you too momma."
I take a sleeping Bella from my mom's arms and run out of my bedroom, down the hallway, down the stairs, through the living room, and finally reach the kitchen. I pop open the door as the growls and pain-filled howls start to get louder and I'm just grateful that Bella is sleeping through all of this.
Finally, we reach the safe room. I lock the door once we're inside and lay Bella on the mattress on the floor. This room has everything we need, there are two mattresses on the floor with blankets and pillows, torches within reach just in case the power goes out or we need to keep the main light off, and a cupboard with drinks and food that doesn't need to be cooked.
I lay down on the mattress and cuddle into Bella. I'm sure we'll be fine, we're not a big pack, there are only 250 members but we have some very strong warriors and have done well when under attacks before. I can't fight because I don't have my wolf yet, I'll get my wolf when I'm 18 but right now I'm only 14.
Bella is 6 months old, she's my niece, my brother Josh's daughter. He and his mate Harley are warriors so after she was born it was agreed that if there was ever an attack, I would take her to the safe room while they fight. My dad Tom is the top warrior here at moonshine and while my mother Helen isn't a warrior, she is one hell of a fighter. She used to be a warrior but quit, choosing to work in the nursery instead. Josh is the 2nd top male warrior and Harley is the 10th top female warrior.
My older sister Brooke was the 2nd top female warrior here which is a great achievement at 18 years old but she met her mate 3 weeks ago at the annual blue moon ball and moved to his pack 6 hours away to be with him. Calvin is the Alpha of the claw moon pack, he's 20 and seems like a really good Alpha and mate to my sister.
I've not met him yet or anyone from the pack as I can't attend the ball until I'm 18 but we are going there in 1 week for the Luna ceremony and I can't wait. I'm super proud of my sister becoming Luna, she's such a lovely person and I know she'll be a great Luna.
I'm slowly waking up and suddenly remembering where I am. I jump up with a start and see we are still in the safe room.
I don't know what time it is but I know it's been hours and I've started getting a sinking feeling in my stomach, I've never been in this room this long before. I don't want to think it but I know deep down in my heart I know this attack hasn't gone our way. I know my family and pack are dead because If anyone had survived, they would have come for us.
What if they're laying outside now injured and need me? I have to know; I have to see for myself if there are any survivors. I grab the backpack in the corner which has supplies for me and Bella for a few days.
I throw it over my shoulder, pick up Bella and put her in the baby carrier I've put on, and pray to the moon goddess that if the worst has happened, I can get us out of here.
Here we go!
I slowly open the door, peaking out I can't see or hear anyone. I slowly make my way up the stairs into the kitchen and the sight before me doesn't give me any hope, the place has been trashed. I make my way through the house and every room is the same.
I head to my bedroom and pray they didn't find my emergency box, Josh and I both have them. They contain a bank card to my parent's savings account, a few hundred dollars in cash, a new phone, and a photo album just in case there's no return. Thankfully it's still there, I put everything in my bag and make my way to the front door.
I get out of the front door and I feel like I've walked onto the set of a horror film. Everything is trashed, there are dead bodies littered everywhere, blood and even body parts sprawled out on the ground.
I feel sick! I'm so glad Bella is sleeping, baby or not she should never see something like this. I take deep breaths to try and calm myself and slowly make my way forwards, as much as I want to run away from this right now, I have to be sure, I have to know if my family is dead.
Making my way around the bodies I want to break down, all these people are just gone, the people I knew, the people I was talking with Just yesterday. Why did this happen? After a few more steps I find Josh and Harley next to each other... they're both dead... their throats have been torn out. My heart breaks for Bella, of course, it breaks for me too but they were her parents and she'll never remember them. I kiss them both on the head and keep walking.
I'm almost to the packhouse when I see my beautiful mom, her hearts torn out and as much as I try, I can't stop my tears from falling. I tell her I love her, kiss her on the head and go look for my dad the only one left I can hope is still alive.
I finally find him with the Beta and Alpha... he's dead his throat has been torn apart and his legs have been bitten off. It's all too much, I can't breathe, I crumble to the floor and quietly sob my heart out while cuddling a sleeping, Bella. It takes me some time to finally calm myself, I look around to see if anyone's coming but no one is, then I remember something...
The safe room in the packhouse. The women, children, and elderly will still be there. I take a few more minutes to say goodbye to my family then I take both my parent's wedding rings and place them on my neckless.
My mom made me, Josh, and Brooke promise a long time ago that if something happened to both of them and any of us was able to, we were to take their rings and keep them with us and I will keep that promise.
Harley and Josh weren't married yet but were engaged so I take Harley's engagement ring and also place it on my neckless, I will keep it safe until Bella is old enough to have it. I can't bear to see my family in pieces anymore so I say my final goodbyes and start walking away. That's not how I want to remember them and they wouldn't want that either.
I make my way to the packhouse on high alert. I still don't know if any Rogues are hanging around. I make it inside the house and it's all clear so far thank moon goddess. This place has been trashed too, everything in ruins and more bodies on the ground.
Arriving in the kitchen I head straight for the pantry, the door to the safe room is inside there.
I call out quietly begging someone to answer me and someone does, I can't believe it. I move quickly to where the sound is coming from to find Mrs Thompson my best friend Carly's mom.
"Mrs Thompson, are you ok?"
"Beth dear hi, no sweetheart I'm bleeding pretty bad!"
"Oh Mrs Thompson we need to get you help now; do you know where Carly is?"
"No, it's too late for me Beth, as soon as I stand, I'll bleed out, I don't have much longer left. Beth sweetheart Carly... she's... gone... She's dead!"
I knew in my heart that she was gone but hearing it out loud still feels like a knife tearing my heart apart, we've been best friends since we were 3 years old.
"Beth is there anyone else out there?"
"No... I've not found anyone alive yet. I don't understand how the Rogues got in here, it's never happened before." My voice is barely above a whisper as I try not to break down again.
"Beth... I need you to listen to me, I don't have long and you need to hear this." I nod my head "Beth this was an inside job. One of our own was working with the Rogues. He showed a group of them this place, he let them in." I'm floored, I sit back on my bum in complete shock.
"I don't understand, who would do that? Why?" Mrs Thompson suddenly breaks down sobbing her heart out and I move in to cuddle her while she continues.
"Beth it was... Marcus who brought the Rogues in here he was a part of it, he doesn't want to have an Alpha anymore he wants to be one so he made a deal with a group of Rogues, they help him wipe out the pack, he'll be the new Alpha and he'll take them in."
"Marcus... as in your SON Marcus?"
"Sadly yes, Beth he killed Carly himself. I don't know who he is but he's not the son I raised!"
I'm so stunned I can't move, can barely form any words. He killed his own sister, he destroyed our pack, F**K!
"Bethany... I need you to listen to me, he said for his plan to work everyone must die. He must be the only survivor to claim the lands. Beth, take Bella and run now sweetheart, and don't look back!"
"I won't leave you alone Joan, I can't!"
"Sweetheart there's nothing that can be done for me. You know I've always loved you like my own, I couldn't save Carly please let me save you and that sweet baby girl!" She's begging me and my heart is torn.
"But... I can't, how do I live without everyone?"
"Beth you are so much stronger than you know. You need to get off the pack lands before they come back, get into town amongst the humans. Have you got a phone on you?"
"Yes, I do bu-"
"Beth get you and Bella into town and call Brooke, she'll help you both, please promise me you'll get away from here before they come back?"
Brooke, how hadn't I thought of that? I've been so consumed by anger and grief that I didn't think about my sister, she's still alive and she'll help us.
"Ok, Joan I promise I will!"
I don't know if I'll be able to do all she wants but I'm not going to tell her that, she doesn't need to hear different when she's minutes from dying so instead I promise her that I'll do it all, I kiss her on the forehead and my heart breaks as I run from her and out of the packhouse.
I make my way off of the pack lands finally accepting that there are no other survivors and head for town. I stick to the roads as I need to avoid the woods, they could be anywhere in there. I can't run at my normal speed because of Bella but I jog as fast as I can, making sure to stay in the shadows as much as possible.
20 minutes later and I'm Finally in town not that I feel any safer. Bella woke up about 5 minutes ago and is whiny so I walk to the local baby shop they have a baby room, it's public and safe. Once she's all fed, burped, and changed I make my way outside to a quiet corner, and with a lump in my throat, I call Brooke.
*Ring ring* ring ring* ring ring* ring...
No answer ugh! she always answers her phone. I try her again and again but still no answer, Shiit! I shoot her a text to phone me ASAP and head for the local Diner I know; I'll hide out there until she calls. I head into Danny's Diner and take a seat in a booth at the back out of the way and order a BLT and coffee. I'm really not hungry but I have to keep my strength up for Bella who's fallen back to sleep again snuggled into my chest.
4 hours later and still no call from Brooke and I've lost count of the number of times I've called her. Why is she not answering? It's 8 pm and I know I need to find somewhere to spend the night, somewhere for Bella to safely sleep. I ask the waitress for a local hotel and she sends me in the right direction.
It's only a 5-minute walk and thankfully they have a room for me.
I Wash up, brush my teeth and get into my pj's before crawling into bed. I try calling Brooke again but no answer ugh! The day slowly catches up with me and I fall into a nightmare-filled sleep...
*Ring ring* *ring ring* ring ring*
I'm dragged out of another nightmare by my phone ringing, I dive out of bed, it's Brooke Oh, thank moon goddess.
"Brooke, where have you been? I've called you about 30 times, why didn't you answer?" I'm speaking so fast I'm struggling to breathe in between.
"Whoa whoa, calm down sweetheart, I'm sorry I didn't answer we had a BBQ last night and I left my phone in my bedroom, what's wrong? Are you ok?"
"No Brooke I'm not, nothing's going to be ok again, I can't do this!" I'm back to holding the tears in.
"I need you to take a deep breath, ok sweetheart? And tell me what's wrong?"
"Tuesday night Rogues attacked the pack lands... the... they killed everyone, Brooke... Mom, Dad, Josh, Harley, Carly... everyone's gone!" My sobs are back and I feel so broken.
"Oh, goddess no!" I can hear the sheer terror in Brooke's voice as she realizes what's happened.
"How did you... what about Isabella?"
"Bella's fine I've got her but it's just us two now."
The phone goes quiet before I hear shuffling from the other end of the phone.
"Bethany, this is Alpha Calvin, are you safe? Where are you?"
"I'm safe, I have my niece Bella with me. We're at a hotel in the human town called the tree line in room 319."
"Ok Beth, don't worry you won't be on your own much longer I am sending my Gamma and a few warriors to come and get you both straight away, they will bring you here to Brooke, to us, ok?"
"Thank you so much, Alpha... but how will I know they are your warriors?"
"Smart girl. Gamma Jack will be there with my warriors John, Callum, Jake, Scott, and David. I will give them the password of Brooke how's that work for you?"
"That sounds ok." I quickly write down the names he gave me.
"Good now it will take them roughly 6 hours to get there, they will be driving straight through to get you both so they should be with you around twelve, ok? In the meantime, I'd prefer it if you didn't leave the room so anything you need order through room service and Gamma Jack will settle the bill when he arrives, please don't worry about the cost!"
"Thank you, Alpha Calvin thank you so much, I don't want to be alone anymore!" My voice breaks as the tears keep falling.
"There's no need to thank me, Beth we are family and you won't be alone for much longer, ok? I know you've lost your home and nothing can replace that but there's a place here with me and Brooke waiting for you both ok?"
"Ok thank you Alpha that means more than you'll ever know, how's Brooke doing?" Bella starts waking up as I'm waiting for his reply.
"She's not doing great but I imagine you are the same?"
"I am, Bella's waking up so I need to make her bottle, please look after Brooke Alpha Calvin."
He assures me he will and that he'll call back soon to check on me. I pop my phone on charge and make a start on Bella’s morning routine... six more hours on our own... we can do this.
*Knock knock knock knock*
My heart picks up pace at the sound of someone knocking on the door.
"Bethany, it's Gamma Jack, we're here to take you and little Isabella home."
"Gamma Jack... who else is with you?" I have to be sure.
"Bethany, I have 5 warriors with me John, Callum, Jake, Scott, and David." As he says the names, they all say hi to me one by one.
"Ok, and what's the password?" Better to be safe than sorry.
"It's Brooke."
I decide I'm happy to believe it's them and I slowly open the door to a huge guy standing there he's at least 6ft3 short jet black hair, bright blue eyes, and very muscular, the power coming off him tells me he's of a high rank. The other 5 guys are also incredibly tall and muscular and I know Bella and I will be safe with them.
He gives me a kind smile as I open the door more so they can come inside. Bella is babbling away in her travel cot while sucking on one of her teddy bunny ears and I swear I see every single one of the guys soften looking at her.
We make quick work of gathering mine and Bella's stuff and leave the room. Gamma Jack offers to carry Bella but I want her with me. I'm not saying he's a bad guy but I don't know him well enough yet and until I get to Brooke, she's all I have.
I go to pay the bill for our room and room service but Gamma Jack stops me and insists he pays and I'm too lost in myself to argue it. We make our way to the SUV they brought, strap Bella in the car seat and all pile in ready to leave this place behind, to leave my family behind.
BETA LIAM
I'm sitting in the Alpha's office running through everything that needs doing today. Our poor Luna Brooke is understandably devastated after the news she received this morning and as always, she can rely on Alpha being at her side. We can all rely on him, he is an incredible Alpha and mate. It may only have been 3 weeks since he met our Luna but he honestly treats her like a queen.
I've not found my mate yet but honestly, I can't wait. It's been 1 year since I turned 18 and could find her but so far, no luck but I'm not giving up hope not yet after all Cal is 20 and only recently met his mate.
I can't believe out of the whole pack there are only 2 known survivors from moonshine and best of all it's Brooke's 14-year-old sister and 6-month-old niece. I know Brooke said she was one hell of a fighter but the fact that she got herself and a baby out of there is insane. I've got to admit Brooke's sister is a strong brave girl she not only got her and the baby away from the pack lands but she's also been on her own for over 24 hours keeping them both safe.
That reminds me I need to make sure the bedrooms are ready for their arrival. Calvin has already asked me to have two of the bedrooms on his floor arranged for them so I quickly link Ashley and he's more than happy to help with getting them ready. Next, I click on the list on the laptop and the first 3 jobs involve the Luna ceremony next week. I leave them for Cal to sort as I'm not sure what's going to happen with that now and move on to the next job on the list.
Morning training, Jack, Calvin, and myself train these groups among others, and luckily for me, I am able to train all 3 classes as it looks like that's what I'll be doing today. I leave a phone message for the Elders informing them of the attack and asking them to call me once they know anything. I want all the details.
Almost 4 hours later all the training sessions are done and I'm heading back to my floor to take a quick shower. My room is on the floor below the Alpha's, as a Beta, I get a whole floor to myself same as the Gamma.
My parents still live on the Beta floor with me but once I find my mate, they will move to a house on the pack lands so we have privacy. They have offered to move out since I took over the Beta position from my dad but I honestly don't see the point, I'm happy for them to live here.
It's not like I bring any she-wolfs there, no I'm not a virgin but there also haven't been many women very few in fact, and I don't sleep with anyone from my pack. I've seen more than once the trouble that can cause and I don't want that for my mate.
I jump in the shower under the hot water and relax, the water is doing a great job of soothing my aching muscles, 3 back-to-back training sessions are enough to make anyone sore. I make quick work of washing up and getting dry before walking into my bedroom in just a towel only to be greeted with the worst sight possible right now.
"Sarah, what are you doing in here?" She's sprawled out on my bed completely naked. This isn't the first time she's tried this but today is not the day for her and her games.
"I heard you're having a hard day and saw you coming to your floor so I thought I could help you relax." She purrs at me making my balls fight to climb back up inside me.
"Sarah we've been over this too many times." I pride myself on respecting women but honestly, this girl is really starting to test my patience. This has been going on since she turned 18, 7 months ago and it has to stop. She's the daughter of our top warrior Richard and a massive pain in my ass.
"Hand over control to me, I'll make sure she doesn't come back!" My wolf Jonah is on the same page as me clearly.
"No Jonah, you know you don't want to hurt her."
"No of course not, I won't hurt her but I can still scare her off."
"No Jonah!" He huffs at me and retreats to the back of my mind.
"Liam, are you even listening to me?" I swear her voice reminds me of nails going down a chalkboard.
"Sarah please leave my room and don't come back!" I'm so pi**ed right now!
"Come on baby we both know you want this; no one needs to know."
"I would know and that is enough but that's beside the point I have told you it's not going to happen and I'm sorry ok but that's just how it is. I am trying to be respectful towards you Sarah but you are really testing my patience, now I have work to do so please leave!"
She pouts her lips and I roll my eyes at her; she finally gives up and wraps her dressing gown around her, and leaves my room thank fck. I don't have time for her bull today. I quickly dress in my dark blue jeans, white shirt with the sleeves folded up to my elbows, and black shoes.
Just as I finish up my lunch Alpha links me to let me know Jack and the guys have got Beth and Bella and are on their way here and I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding and thank the moon goddess for keeping them safe until we could get to them.
What she has been through, the things she must have seen doesn't bear thinking about, the sooner they are here the better. I check my messages and there's one off Timothy one of the Elders.
"Hello, Beta Liam, sorry I missed your call. So we were made aware of the attack on the moonshine pack just a couple of hours ago by a surviving member and we are currently still investigating what has happened. I myself am at the pack lands now, as soon as we are able to establish somewhat what happened there, we will be in contact with you, Alpha Calvin, and Luna Brooke. Please send my deepest condolences to Luna Brooke and I will speak to you soon. Bye Beta Liam."
A surviving member huh? Cal hasn't mentioned Beth calling the Elders, I get a strange feeling in my gut and decide to mention this to Cal.
"Alpha, have you got a moment?" Mind link is so handy sometimes.
"Of course, Beta what's up?"
"Are you able to come to the office? If not it's no problem I'll talk over the link."
"Actually, Ashley is calling to our floor in 30 minutes to help Brooke with Beth's birthday once he's here I can call down. Can the matter wait 30 minutes, or is it urgent?"
"No, it's not urgent Cal, 30 minutes is fine."
"Great see you then." He cuts off the link and I go back to my work. I'm up to my eyes in jobs today between making sure all the Alpha duties are completed and my own Beta duties I honestly haven't got a minute to myself not that I mind. The only problem I have is I can't get the Elder's message out of my head, a survivor informed them, but Who is it?
"You ok there Liam?" I'm pulled out of my thoughts by Alpha Calvin. I didn't even hear the door going never mind him sitting down across the desk from me. This guy is amazing this is his office, his desk and yet when I'm covering, he doesn't ask me to move from his seat instead he sits across the desk from me as if he's in my own office, not his.
"Sorry Cal I was somewhere else then."
"I hope she was at least pretty, distracting you like that."He shoots me a wink and I can't help but laugh.
"Haha no no Cal that's not it believe me."
"Ok, Liam so what's up?" He's quickly back to his all-business tone.
"Ok so this morning I called the Elders to inform them about moonshine but there wasn't any answer so I left a message informing them of the attack and asked for someone to call me back. I left the office shortly after to get breakfast and take the training sessions and when I came back Elder Timothy had left a message for me." I press play on the machine and let Cal listen to the message.
"A survivor informed them? Beth never mentioned she spoke to them. I wouldn't have thought she would think to call them but then again she has surpassed all my thoughts on what a 14-year-old would do in her situation so maybe she did. I'll call her and ask." He calls Beth but she is adamant that she never made the call says she doesn't have a number for any of them and she definitely couldn't find any survivors when she looked.
"Shiit!" Alpha shouts out loud.
"What is it, Cal?"
"What if we've left another survivor there alone?"
"Well, if Beth didn't make the call, then that is a possibility, maybe they got out before Beth did it would explain why she didn't see anyone but... I've got a strange feeling about this Cal."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know what it is. I can't put my finger on it but I got the same strange feeling when I first listened to the message earlier."
"Ok well you know I trust you and your judgment so how about we wait to hear from the Elders before we go any further? The Elders are on the pack lands now so whoever it is isn't alone and Beth will be here soon so we'll be able to find out more then."
I agree with him and he heads back to be with Luna while I make a start on the pack's finances. 20 minutes later Ashley links me letting me know both Beth's and Bella's rooms are ready for them and it's great timing as they should be here soon.
A few hours later and I've managed to finish all the paperwork and everything's in place for Beth and Bella's arrival. I'm chatting with Ashley in the kitchen waiting for dinner to be ready when we both get a link of Calvin letting us know Jack will be arriving with everyone in a few minutes.
We leave the kitchen and head for the front door where Calvin and Brooke are already waiting, I give Brooke a hug and she shares a grateful smile with me but I can tell she's struggling to hold herself together... poor girl.
We all step outside as the SUV is making its way down the driveway. It pulls up in front of us and the guys start making their way out and at the same time, Jonah starts prancing around in my head and whining.
"What's wrong Jonah?"
"I don't know Liam; I think something's about to happen!"
I tell him to try and relax and he goes to the back of my mind, the guys start piling up the steps and into the house then Jack walks around from the other side of the SUV with a young girl. She's looking towards the ground while holding a baby, of course I know it's Beth and Bella but for some reason, I've got a strange feeling in my stomach that won't shift.
Suddenly she looks up and our eyes connect for a moment and I swear my heart skips a beat and just before she looks away Jonah rushes to the front of my mind and utters the one sentence that will change my life forever "MATE"... "LIAM BETH'S OUR MATE!"... OH hel!
