What you eat and drink affects your diabetes. Different foods can help you stay healthy and prevent complications. But some foods can make it harder to control your blood sugar and increase your risk of heart problems and other diseases.
A healthy diet is about balance and variety. You need to eat different foods from each food group every day. And you need to eat more of some foods and less of others.
You also need to watch your portion sizes. They have grown bigger over the years, which can make you gain weight. Being overweight can make your diabetes worse.
Here are the main food groups and how they can help you:
Fruit and veg They are low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals and fibre. They also add flavour and colour to your meals.
They can protect you from stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers. These are more common when you have diabetes.
You should eat at least five portions a day. A portion is about the size of your palm. You can have fresh, frozen, dried or canned fruit and veg. But avoid fruit juices and smoothies as they have less fibre.
