a love letter to Costa Rica 💌 from student . i had the most amazing opportunity to attend a sustainable development and social justice service trip through in northern costa rica. During our trip, we spent our time engaging with communities and learning a lot about Costa Rican Culture. In Caño Negro we learned how to make tortillas with a nicaraguan refugee family, play soccer with local children and practice our spanish. In Los Chiles, I was blessed to be able to cook and serve transnational migrants moving through south and central america to the US. In Bijagua, we got to experience the rainforest first hand and learn about the importance of the environment. In Playa Hermosa, we had the opportunity to dig up sea turtle nests and release baby turtles to the ocean. This trip had left me with many life lessons and friendships that I plan to take with me back to the US. I am forever grateful for this experience and all the people I got to learn from along the way 🇨🇷🫶🏼
It's so much more than a line.
On a visit to the Nicaragua 🇳🇮 Costa Rica 🇨🇷 border with the OUCCAS team, we discussed the contrasts and connections between Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
The border -an invisible line- marks the difference between freedom and persecution; between economic opportunities and extreme poverty; between respect for human rights and indiscriminate violations of all basic rights.
In discussions about diversity and cultural humility, it is important to include and recognize national and ethnic identities, histories, and cultures. There is no one Latinx or Central American experience - and making the effort understand that is key to building cultural humility.
