Costa Rica has long been famous among serious bird watchers and many people who never before had an interest change their mind when they encounter the country's spectacular avian diversity. With almost 900 species of birds – more than all of North America – concentrated into an area half the size of Kentucky, it is hard not to become an instant fan of the beautifully feathered creatures one encounters in Costa Rica.
Diversity: One of the reasons for Costa Rica's extraordinary bird life is the country's great variety of habitats: rain forests; mangrove swamps; beaches; cloud forest; rivers and more. Any two of those ecosystems, with their resident bird species, are often only a short distance apart. Birders from North America who visit Costa Rica during the northern winter invariably recognize familiar faces in the forest, since many species of warblers, flycatchers, vireos, orioles, etc. migrate to Costa Rica every winter.
Preservation: The country's exemplary system of National Parks and Protected Areas provides more than ample stomping grounds for birders, but just about anywhere in Costa Rica interesting avian species are spotted. Colorful varieties like the blue-grey tanagers, great kiskadees and crimson-fronted parakeets can be seen twittering and hopping around the gardens of San Jose hotels. True bird watching enthusiasts will want to see the resplendent quetzal, which lives in the cloud forests of Monteverde, Los Santos region and the Central Volcanic Mountain Range. The equally spectacular scarlet macaw can be seen on the Osa Peninsula and around the Carara Biological Reserve.
Inside the Cerro Dantas Wildlife Reserve!
Nestled in the mountains of Heredia and very close to the boundary of Braulio Carrillo National Park, there is a nature-filled adventure waiting for you.
Put on comfortable shoes and some warm clothes bring your camera and get ready for a hike filled with fresh air and good memories.
Cerro Dantas is located 20 km northeast of the Universidad Nacional. It consists of 57 ha of primary and secondary cloud forest.
It’s important to note that the hike might start much earlier depending on the type of vehicle you’re using.
You can leave your vehicle about 3.7 km from the refuge in a private property with a security guard. If you want to keep going, you can park 1.9 km from the park, though this spot doesn’t have any security. There is another place 1.2 km from the entrance, but only 4x4 vehicles will be able to make it there, since the road is not in the best shape. The last parking area also has no security.
Once you reach the refuge, you can choose from between two trails: one that’s 3.5 km long and another that’s 6.5 km. Just a few meters from the reception area, you can visit the Velo de Novia waterfall, where you can go for a (very cold) dip. The waterfall is the perfect place to rest and take some nice photos.
On the trails, you’ll be able to see a variety of trees, orchids, birds, creeks and more waterfalls.
There are options to stay at the refuge, either in rooms inside the refuge or by camping; a meal service is also available. If you’re thinking of staying the night, do bring good jackets as the temperature drops at night.
Now that you know that an incredible day or weekend awaits you in Heredia, you can plan on visiting this refuge.
Live the experience of enjoying a dream destination for its spectacular biodiversity. Receive a warm welcome from the Costa Ricans, contemplate landscapes that allow you to reflect and dive into activities charged with adrenaline in nature. All this and more is what our services are capable of offering before, during and after your customers' trip.

THE FORTUNA WATERFALL
The Fortuna River Waterfall is a natural area managed sustainably by Integral Development Association of La Fortuna (ADIFORT), a non-profit organization founded since August 31, 1969, having as its main objective to ensure the well-being and growth of La Fortuna community, through the work ex*****on of road infrastructure, environment, education, promotion of sport and culture, community beautification and strengthening of public safety; projects that are possible to run thanks to funds raised by the visit of each tourist to this natural space.
The Fortuna River waterfall is located in a biological reserve with an area of 210 acres of transition premontane tropical wet forest, part of the Arenal Volcano National Park and is located at 520 meters over the sea level, where there are sources of our mountains and the waters of the Fortuna River. Within this sector is the Cerro de los Perdidos, Placas de Mayo and Cerro Chato, which are based on rocky foundations of great geological value, causing in turn a lush and scenic beauty.
To observe this splendid 70 meters high waterfall, visitors must pass a path of approximately 530 steps, which offers greater security to its passage and comfortable areas for rest and hydration through a forest with native trees of the area. Once in front of the waterfall, you will find a spacious and comfortable vantage point from which you can freeze your memories using unique and previously unpublished photographs, and finally take a refreshing swim in the clear waters of the Fortuna River, with an only witness (the River Fortune waterfall).
Los Quetzales National Park Los Quetzales National Park is located in the district of Copey and canton of Dota, San José province, 76.5 kilometers south of the capital. It is a special area for birdwatching, particularly the quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), a near-endangered species according to the UICN list. The type of cloud forest generated by different climatic conditions includes trees covered with a wide variety of plant species, which makes them attractive to birds and animals that inhabit the area. It is home to many endemic species of flora and fauna. The areas of most endemic vegetation are high, subalpine and alpine montane floors, which include more than 50% of the 53 endemic species registered in the Savegre basin. In addition, the park is located at the head of the Savegre River Basin, a catchment and feeding area for aquifers. It is bordered to the north by La Amistad-Pacífico Conservation Area (separated by the Pan-American Highway), and to the northwest by Cerro Las Vueltas Biological Reserve. On one end, it borders the Pirris River Basin and the Reventazón-Parismina River Basin. The park's maximum elevation is 3,190 meters above sea level, and the minimum is 1,240. Temperatures range between 5-14° C, with annual average rainfall of 2,648 mm.
Coronado: Locos por el Bosque
Looking for something to do in your day off in San José?
The highlands of the Central Valley of Costa Rica hide one of the greatest treasures of the country: The Braulio Carrillo National Park. Coronado’s town holds about 60% of that park and, traditionally, it is a region with large protected areas and dairy farming. Here, the biological reserve Locos por el Bosque offers different hikes that can be enjoyed in a day.
Costa Rica´s territory is so small that it encompasses only 0.03 percent of the planet´s surface but is still within the top 20 richest countries in biodiversity on Earth in terms of species density. That means that it is possible to find more species in 1,000 km2 in Costa Rica as in the same area in huge countries like Brazil or Colombia.
Let´s use Brazil as an example. Despite being 166.6 times bigger than Costa Rica, Brazil averages 6.5 plant species, 0.2 bird species and 0.05 mammal species per 1,000 km2. Meanwhile, Costa Rica averages 234.8 plant species, 16.9 bird species and 4.6 mammal species in that same 1,000 km2.
In fact, with only 51,100 km2 of total territory, Costa Rica has nearly half a million species, representing 6% of the planet´s biodiversity. We hope all the world is ready to discover it.
