👉 Probably you have learned a foreign language in the past. Have you noticed that when you don't practice it for a while, suddenly you feel "rusty"? You don't remember words you are sure you knew, and speaking feels more difficult.

On 1st of April 1955, the EOKA started their 4 year guerilla campaign against Britain by which Cyprus was annexed after the 1st world war. Their original aim was a unification with Greece, but after agreements between Britain, Greece, and Turkey, Cyprus received its independence in 1960.

There are many reasons why someone's learning a new language - work, travel, love, interest in the culture, a move... It's important to know your goal in order to stay motivated, even when new grammar or a never ending vocab list keep challenging you.

Some people might be happy with learning the basics to get by, others want to become fluent. Some want to focus on conversation, others might want to understand the ins and outs of the foreign grammar.

It's always great to be able to understand and communicate in another language, but we are curious:)

In Cyprus, we call it "Καθαρά Δευτέρα", literally "clean Monday". From today, the fasting period before Easter starts, usually with a big fish meze. Afterwards and until Easter, you will find lots of "nistisimi" products in the shops as many people will observe the fasting.

Today is also the day for picknicks and flying kites, and as it's a public holiday, enjoying time with family and friends.

👉 The day commemorates the students killed when the N***s attacked the University of Prague on 17th of November 1939. Subsequently many students were sent to concentration camps and all universities in Czech Republic were closed by the N***s.

👉 Later on, the purpose of the day was widened to promote the European Student Rights Charter and discuss the role of students and student unions against human rights violations.

👉 It's also a day to celebrate the multiculturalism of students in today's universities. Learning new languages has a big role in enabling students to move abroad for studying, and we're thrilled to accompany you a bit on the way!

👉 October, 28th, is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus, to commemorate Metaxa, Greece's prime minister in 1940, and his "Oxi" (no) towards Mussolini.

🧐 Italy had put forward an ultimatum requesting Greece to allow army forces to enter Greek territory during World War II. After Metaxa's "no", troops attacked the Greek borders, which led to the beginning of Greece's participation in the war. On the morning of October, 28th, Greeks went to the streets shouting "oxi" as a response.

👉 Nowadays, the public holiday is celebrated with military and student parades, businesses remain closed.
