Sustainability Assurance Engagements

New article by the ACCA - therefore a new current issue for the AAA exams!!

There are lots of regulations coming out regarding sustainability (eg IFRS S1 and IFRS S2), so it was a matter of time for a corresponding standard from the audit/assurance side of things - ISSA5000 (exposure draft) - coming into our AAA exam...

Summary:

Nothing new really. There is emphasis on Ethics in relation to such engagements so make sure you are OK with this section of the article. Make sure you are OK with the term "Greenwashing" (=when an organisation makes false or misleading statements about sustainability information) in case you see it in a requirement. But other than that, we have already covered the required knowledge in our courses, and have already seen and practiced relevant past exam questions.

And obviously with this article, there is now a much higher % of getting this topic in the exams in the next couple of exam sittings!

ACCA exam dates for March 2024 are different than normal!!! They then resume their normal days for June 2024...

AA/AAA exams are on the Thursday instead of the Monday
SBR is on the Monday instead of the Thursday

The new-format SBL exam took place yesterday...

So what did we learn???

1) The exam was generally more difficult than other times, with a negligible number of students saying they found it easy, and the majority of students being very disappointed with how the exam went

2) The pre-seen materials were not useful at all, other than for having a basic background idea - the requirements were totally unpredictable (with the exception of one or two) and wholly based on the new exhibits given in the exam

3) There were huge differences between the papers sat by students! One had Culture, NEDs, investment appraisal for a new training system, risks, and financial/KPI analysis. Another had Leadership, evaluating proposals (a new route and having a business class), financing options, Big Data, Disruption technologies... Others had CSR in Q1... All the students I talked to in Cyprus seem to have sat the first one...

The overall feeling is that the new changes have resulted in a more difficult exam.... Saying that, the pass-rates are expected to stay the same so the students that would have passed previously should still be passing with the new structure...

Upcoming changes to SBL exam From the September 23 exam session we'll be making some changes to the SBL exam.

Answering Section A questions in the Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) exam The Section A question in the AAA exam is worth 50 marks, therefore gaining a strong mark in this question is key to passing the exam.
