Pick of the day: Beatrix Potter books - The perfect first classics

Back in my home country, there is a bunch of Beatrix Potter books in my old bedroom that are practically in tatters, a clear testimony to how often they were chosen at bedtime.

However, it's only while reading the stories to my little ones that I realized why Beatrix Potter books are timeless classics - the stories grow with you!

The exciting adventures of the cutesy bunnies accompanied by beautiful illustrations are enough to make these stories bedtime favorites for any child.

However, as you grow older and more worldly-wise, hidden layers of the stories start unraveling themselves as if by magic. Deep themes of class struggle, politics, the dilemmas and challenges of the working class, feminism and the constant struggle for survival hide behind deceptively simple, sweet tales. In other words, the stories are what you want them to be.

There is also a simple message that is the basis of all Beatrix Potter books - in spite of harrowing experiences and disappointments, disasters and accidents, life must go on.

Every time you come back to these books, you can expect to discover a little nugget of wisdom that you missed before, or see it from a completely different angle. Such is the magic of Beatrix Potter books, even 120 years after her first book was published.

What is it about the fuzzy, honey-obsessed, slightly neurotic Winnie The Pooh that resonates with us almost 100 years after author A.A.Milne introduced him to us? The answer to that is not really difficult to gauge. While the red t-shirt-clad bear captures little hearts with his mere cuteness, deeper layers of his unique personality unravel as we grow older, and he emerges as a figure of comfort and even inspiration. Every time I read a Pooh story to my kids, I find a new reason to love him:

Pooh is the friend we all need: Pooh has had the same squad of friends forever - a narcissistic owl, a depressed donkey, an anxiety-prone pig, a jumpy tiger, a sulking bunny - each uniquely imperfect and adorable in their own way. They always have each other's back and have the best time together. Pooh teaches us that it's OK to be you and there is no such thing as a perfect friend, only perfect friendship. There are so many wonderful things about Tigger, but what’s the MOST wonderful thing? That he’s the only one!

Pooh loves himself: We could all learn a lesson or two from Pooh's body-positive attitude and the ability to be comfortable in his own skin. When he looks in the mirror, he sees a happy bear that he is proud of, and he sees no reason to deny himself the simple pleasure of a pawful of honey every now and then. I am short and fat, and proud of that - he reminds himself.

Pooh lives in the moment: He composes songs at the drop of a hat, he dances when he wants to. When someone says nothing is impossible, Pooh does nothing the whole day to prove him wrong. And he also teaches how to do nothing - “It means just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”

Pooh is wise: Pooh's simple but profound philosophies of life and love that I loved reading as a child, simply blew my mind when I revisited them as an adult. He wraps up deep ponderings in bite-sized nuggets of wisdom that prove he is anything but what he calls himself- "A Bear Of Very Little Brain.”
