Year of the Wood DragonNew year begins today in Tibet and other parts of the Himalayas. It’s in the sign of the wooden dragon and that only happens every 60 years. But why is it like that?First let's see the dragon. He is one of the 12 symbols mouse/rat, bull/buffalo, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep/goat, monkey, bird/rooster, dog and pig. They form the smaller cycle, the 12 year cycle. The dragon stands for strong energy, creativity but also discipline.The 5 elements of Tibetan astrologyWood is one of the five elements of Tibetan astrology, the other four are fire, earth, iron/metal and water. These elements originate from the combination of the two ancient categories of good and evil of the bön with the Chinese ying and Yang (Tibetan astrology by Luciana Marinangeli). This is a bit different than in Tibetan medicine, where instead of the element wood, it is the element wind and instead of iron, it is the elements space.
