In September and October, we were in Rome for another campaign at the Villa of Sette Bassi. After the floor plans of the central main building had already been drawn up in the spring, the building remains was now recorded in sections and elevations at a scale of 1:50, in true-to-scale photomaps and photographs. The northern main building was completely recorded by means of 3D scanners. We had a great time and thank the Parco Archeologico dell'Appia Antica and DE MARCO SRL very much for their support and cooperation.

What's going on in the Sette Bassi project? It's been a long social media break, but of course we haven't been idle…

After our first big campaign, we spent the winter analyzing the collected data. Based on the scan data, we were finally able to start modelling a digital model on which Building Information Modelling methods for building research are being tested. The building research documentation was digitized and the first analyses of the spatial development of the southern main building could be carried out.

In March and April, another major campaign took place, which now focused on the central main building. This time, the building research team was supported by three students from the Historical Building Research program at the TU Berlin, who were able to participate in both the scanning work and the drawing documentation.

To our great delight, two of the students from the Master's program were persuaded to take on their own object of study, which they are now investigating independently as part of their Master's thesis. Madleena Brunken and Marco Rossini have been investigating the so-called garden portico of the villa since May 2022.

Archaeological activities in the area of the Villa of Sette Bassi 🤩

Last week we finished our first big campaign in the villa of Sette Bassi. In the past 6 weeks, two of the three main buildings and the so-called temple could be completely scanned. Using the Structure from Motion method, image plans of almost all walls of the main builing A were created. These helped to create the building research documentation in the form of sections, views and mapping on a scale of 1:50. Furthermore, all rooms and walls were photographically documented and described.

We are satisfied and happy with what we have achieved! Now it's time to process and rework the data at home!

We thank the Parco Archeologico dell'Appia Antica and the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut Rom - Istituto Archeologico Germanico for their support and look forward to seeing them again soon.

Yeah, we are in Rome for our first big campaign! Today we first had to look for fixed points. Great fun after a 3 year break 😀 Then we scanned the freshly cleaned temple and started with the documentation of the main building A.
