【Event Information from Member University: Kobe University】

We are pleased to inform you of the symposium " Emerging Sciences and a Changing World: EU-Japan in Transition " to be held on 8 November 2016 at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). This is the 7th Kobe University Brussels European Centre and this year’s symposium is jointly organised with VUB. During the event, latest collaboration between Japan and EU in Data Science, Cultural Diversity, Migration and Security, and Particle Physics will be introduced by prominent researchers from Japanese and EU institutions.

Waseda University was founded in 1882 by Shigenobu Okuma, later Prime Minister of Japan. It comprises 13 undergraduate and 21 graduate schools covering most areas of social and natural sciences, liberal arts, and engineering, with over 52,000 students. This private university promotes internationalization proactively such as implementing English-based degree programs, having the largest international student body among Japanese universities, with more than 5,000, and so on.
Over 600,000 Waseda graduates are actively taking leading roles in various fields around the world.

Tokai University European Center (TUEC), located in Denmark since 1970, is Tokai University’s liason office in Europe. In line with the overarching mission of Tokai University, TUEC works to promote global peace and intercultural understanding via academic and cultural exchange.

TUEC’s primary functions are to support Tokai University academic staff and students on research and study-related trips to Europe, organize conferences, seminars and workshops within various academic fields, establish and maintain exchange programs with relevant educational counterparts in Europe, and to expand Tokai University’s network in Europe.

Osaka University is a comprehensive national university corporation founded in 1931 that has traditionally valued liberal ways of thinking, novelty, advancement and academic research. The university now comprises 11 schools/faculties, 16 graduate schools, 5 research institutes, 3 national joint-use facilities, 19 joint-use facilities, 36 research facilities, 2 hospitals, and 4 libraries. There are 3 campuses located in the northern part of Osaka prefecture, and a total of 23,000 students and 6,000 stuffs, including 2000 and 900 people from oversea, respectively, are working in an ideal location for education and research.

The Japan Cultural Institute in Cologne opened in 1969.
Since 1972, as an overseas office of Japan Foundation, the institute has been introducing Japan's culture in German-speaking countries.
The three main areas of activity are: "Arts and Cultural Exchange", "Japanese Language Education "," Japanese Studies and Intellectual Exchange".
The institute also offers a broad program of language courses for an immediate access to Japanese culture, information on Japan, and supports projects of other institutions related to Japan.
The primary goal is to increase knowledge about Japan broadly and enhance the friendship between the countries through introducing a wide range of Japanese culture.
