Ironically, LGBT+ has gotten the reputation in Ghana of being a Western import.

This is looking away from the fact that the existing anti-gay law was imported by the Brits, and the religion that fuels the homophobic climate was imported by the Danes. Meanwhile, US evangelical groups have channelled millions of dollars into Africa, funding homophobic legislation.

We have collectively forgotten our colonial past in Ghana. The hundreds of thousands of people we sold as slaves, the religion we exported, and the consequences we left behind.

According to many q***rs in Ghana, homophobia is colonial residue. It was the colonisers that first outlawed existing q***r identities. And we cannot deny part of the blame!

But what exactly is it that we left behind in Ghana? Join us as we explore this question after a screening of Joewackle’s new film, Nyame Mma, which was featured at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Thank you so much for showing up to protest on behalf of the LGBTQ community in Ghana.

My name is Papa kojo Ampofo, I am an intersex and gender nonconforming activist in Ghana and I am also one of the people who coordinated this event.

Since the introduction of the draconian anti-lgbt bill in 2021, the LGBTIQ community continue to face harm and violence sanctioned by the government of Ghana and perpetuated by homophobic citizens without punishment. Each day we record a new case of either a gay man being beaten or a le***an being r***d, among others. This has been predicted to increase with the passage of the bill and its signing into law. What this means is that once this bill is signed into law by the President of Ghana, activists and the LGBTIQ community are going to have a human rights abuse crisis.

Again, not only has this draconian bill increased abuse of the members in our community, it also bans organizations working to provide needed services to the LGBTIQ community. It also completely prohibits advocacy of any kind, infringing on several fundamental human rights including the right to organize, expression, and privacy.

As defenders, it falls on us to ensure that we do all we can to fight this evil and I want to thank you once again for supporting us in this fight. The message we seek to get across to the President of Ghana is that any attempt to sign this bill is a death sentence on members of the LGBTIQ community!

Thank and remember to sign our petition urging the President to not assent to the bill, as well as donating to our Community Support Fund to support community members.

We’re so sorry to inform that the anti-LGBT bill has just been passed in the Parliament of Ghana this week 😢

The bill will punish identifying with LGBTQ with up to 3 years’ imprisonment, and supporting LGBTQ rights in any way - for example by speaking against the bill - with up to 5 years’ imprisonment. It will also implement a duty to report q***r persons to the authorities, even if this is friends and family.

The bill has received so much support from far right American Christian organisations such as World Congress of Families who have invested over $54 million in Africa between 2007 and 2018 to push for anti-LGBT legislation in Africa. It was after a conference they held in Accra that the bill came into being.

Thankfully, the president hasn’t signed it into law yet, so there is still a bit of hope. But it is therefore important right now to spread the news and create international awareness. The president needs to know that the whole world cares!

So please share this post with everyone!

If the anti-LGBT+ bill gets passed into law, it would be illegal to argue for its repeal - outrageous! 😡😡
