The artwork for Mike Sheridan’s album ATMOSPHERICS is a photogram, an image made without a camera, which has been photographed hereby creating a so-called moiré pattern. In line with the album’s title and Sheridan’s sonic universe, it is an artwork that vibrates like visual atmospheric waves.
Moiré is both an optical and acoustic phenomenon that occurs when two nearly identical patterns, or sound waves, are superimposed and interfere with each other. Through this interference, a new, vibrating, and almost three-dimensional pattern is created in optics, while in acoustics, a new third sound wave is produced.
“An album artwork serves as both a visual anchor and transforms the atmospheric intangibility of the music into something physical and manageable. This dynamic is emphasized in the artwork of ATMOSPHERICS, where I use the moiré phenomenon to create a visual space that is simultaneously concrete, yet only sensed in its entirety through the optical interaction of the patterns in the viewer’s eyes.
It shivers, undulates, and crackles in the eyes, just like the musical atmosphere of the album is created by sound waves orchestrated by Sheridan, merging, interacting, and interfering in the listener’s ears.
The idea behind the cover is not just to create an illustration for the music but to mirror, through a related visual phenomenon, the sonic interactions and collisions that flow out of the speakers when the stylus on the record player, quite literally, translates the zig-zagged grooves of the LP into sound vibrations.”

ATMOSPHERICS by Mike Sheridan will be released on the 17th November 2023 via hfn music and Playground Music Denmark.
It is produced, composed, recorded and mixed by Mike Sheridan at artFREQ., and in his personal studio in Copenhagen.
It is his first solo release in 11 years.
The album plays though it’s 50 minutes as a collection of 10 sonic essays, each bearing Mike Sheridan’s sonic signature; a fluid motion of electronic ambience, rhythm, and acoustic sources. Features includes a variety of Danish and international guests such as Agnes Aldén, Indra Rios-Moore, BYLJA and Janus Rasmussen.
ATMOSPHERICS embraces its credo - drawing directly from the ambient feeling of Sheridan's landmark debut album I Syv Sind (2008) and his later works. The 10 new compositions channel themes and fascinations such as orphaned stars, plasma outbursts hurtling toward earth, mirror images in the digital realm, palimpsestic revelations and robotic manufacturing.
The albums artwork is created by Nicolai Howalt and designed by Studio Rasmus Koch
