In this interview Sarah Wilson talks openly about axiety and bipolar. A subject many people are often quite anxious (!!!) to talk about.
π "We've grown up with this notion that anxiety is a disorder, it's a problem."
π "We've grown up with this idea that anxiety is something we should shut down, we should tame, we should really eliminate."
She talks about being a "high functioning anxious person". Sarah wants to "create a conversation about not just LIVING wiht anxiety, but THRIVING - and thriving because of them" (~mental conditions).
She also talks about using your mental condition as a superpower.
π "We lack resilience... We can't sit in our s**t long enough to pass through it."
π "How can anxiety be something that you can really use as a force of good? ... Excitement and anxiety stimulate the same chemical response in the brain... When I'm anxious I often CHOOSE to see it as excitement - and quite often it is."
π "The worst thing about axiety is that we get anxious about being anxious and then we get anxious about being anxious about being anxious, and so on... With hunger we can eat. Most of our pain can be satiated with something else. With anxiety there doesn't seem to be something that is the satiation point."
π A panic attack only ever lasts 20 to 30 minutes!!! If you know this, you can say "hang on, this is only gonna last 20 to 30 minutes. I can sit through this. I'm sure that I can be resilient enough to last 20 to 30 minutes of agony. I'll come out that other end and be all cool".
π π π "I DO think meditation as discipline, as a practice, for that kind of thing, that ability to stop, find a space between all the words and all the stuff, to regroup, refocus and be vigilant is non-negotiable" π π π
π "The crappier you are at meditating, the more benefits you get from it... Everybody in mediation is instructed to come back - to the breath, to the mantra... Your thoughts go off... you gently come back. When you are a good meditater you might have to do that a handful of times, but when you're a crap meditater you are constantly gently coming back, gently coming back... You're retraining synapses in your brain - keep coming back. You have slowly reprogrammed your brain to do that in the rest of your life. I don't care about being a crap meditater, I care about the impacts for the rest of my life."
π "Exercise is an amazing (?) for anxiety, because it's an opportunity to express all of those hormones out. Get them expressed so that you don't do anxiety more that once. You don't get anxious about being anxious about being anxious.
π£ Sarah talks about the benefits of walking. That the part of the brain that controls walking is the same part of the brain that controls the fight or flight response. Walking shuts down the fight or flight response. So walking is non-negotiable when you have a panic attack.
π Another non-negotiable hack is quitting SUGAR - "quitting sugar had an immediate impact on both my hashimotos and my bipolar. TWO WEEKS. In two weeks I noticed a discernable difference.
She refers to a study i Switzerland, where pipolar patients were put on a sugar-free diet, and how much they improved.
π "If you have to make too many decisions in a day it will actually trigger anxiety, and when you're anxious you can't make decisions".
So the less decisions you have to make in the morning - e.g. by having a morning routine frees up capacity for the rest of the day.
π Practice resilience - sit through it when your nose scratches, a fly is bothering you or the like. Practice resilience on a daily basis.
I think she has so many good points in this interview. I have tried to mention the ones that I noticed the most, but there are more. There are no fancy hacks or tricks - just down to earth, pretty logical (my own opinion) things to do to calm your anxiety and be a high functioning person living with a mental condition.

β€οΈ It tears your soul apart again and again and hinders you from knowing your true self, from listening deeply to your true, loving inner voice - the voice that KNOWS that you are a perfect, loving, smart & beautiful creation β€οΈ

At the Himba of Namibia in Southern Africa, the date of birth of a child is fixed, not at the time of its arrival in the world, nor in its design, but much earlier: since the day the child is thought in His Mother's mind.β
When a woman decides she's going to have a child, she settles down and rests under a tree, and she listens until she can hear the song of the child who wants to be born. And after she's heard this child's song, she comes back to the man who will be the father of the child to teach him that song. And then, when they make love to physically design the child, they sing the song of the child, to invite him.β
When the mother is pregnant, she teaches the singing of this child to the midwives and older women of the village. So, when the child is born, old women and people around him sing his song to welcome him.β
As the child grows, the other villagers learn his song. So if the child falls, or gets hurt, he always finds someone to pick him up and sing his song. Similarly, if the child does something wonderful, or successfully passes through the rites of passage, the people of the village sing his song to honor him.β
In the tribe, there is another opportunity where villagers sing for the child. If, at any time during his life, the person commits an aberrant crime or social act, the individual is called in the center of the village and the people of the community form a circle around him.
Then they sing his song.β
The tribe recognizes that the correction of antisocial behavior does not pass through punishment, it is by love and reminder of identity. When you recognize your own song, you don't want or need to do anything that would harm the other.β
And the same way through their lives. In marriage, songs are sung together.β
And when, getting old, this kid is lying in his bed, ready to die, all the villagers know his song, and they sing, for the last time, his song.

I can add that water can heal our bodies, emotions, minds and souls if we let it.

True healing is not just the abscence of physical pain. It is healing - as in becoming whole - of your entire being. Not just your physical body.
π¦ Clean, fresh water - preferably from a natural source - is highly vibrant and contains exactly what your body needs. Nothing else.
Before you drink your water, you can send love and gratitude to it and wish that it may contain the exact vibrations that your body needs. You don't need to know which vibrations that is.
There are lots of different ways to cleanse your water. E.g. store it in a container made of copper or add a little silver water to it. You can easily taste the difference.
There lies an enormous power in your words, thoughts and actions, so why not use them with a purpose to heal yourself so that you feel nourished instead of drained?

The cycles of life.
Are you aware of the different cycles that you inevitably interact with in your daily life - throughout the year, throughout the day and during your menstrual cycle?
The energies vary depending on the time of year, and that affects your energy. Therefore you can use it to your advantage to be aware of the seasons and plan according to the annual cycle.
πΏπ³ During SPRING the sun is shining more and more, the temperature rises and the trees blossom. It's a time when you have the opportunity to blossom too. Nourish and fertilize the seeds you have sown and let them sprout. It's a time for unfolding your ideas, be creative and create frameworks for what you wish to see grow.
π¦π In SUMMER the energy peaks. There's love in the air, you have more energy, less need for sleep and rest. It's the optimal time for being productive. Complete the projects you started in the spring. There are fresh, local foods that will nourish your body, mind and soul. It's time to swim in the ocean, walk barefoot in the grass, look at the stars and feel the heat and energy of the sun pe*****te you.
ππ AUTUMN is a time for harvesting the fruits of your efforts. Time to gather supplies and to evaluate. The trees fade, they shed their leaves and nature prepares for the coming winter. It's time for you to pay attention to and notice what felt good and what maybe did not feel so good in the previous seasons. It's time to slow down.
βοΈβοΈ When WINTER is approaching, the energy is at it's lowest. It's time to rest and hibernate. It's at good time for vision seeking, go deep, feel yourself and listen to your inner voice. What's your vision for the coming year, the coming seasons? Now is the time to charge your batteries, so that they are ready for what's coming your way.
No matter if you menstruate or not, you can benefit from paying attention to your own cycle as well.
πΏπ³ The time from menstruation to ovulation (follicular period) corresponds with SPRING. You now have the opportunity to nourish yourself, be creative and plan.
π¦π Ovulation corresponds with SUMMER. It's a good time of the month to be productive, create and celebrate life.
ππ The time from ovulation to me**es (luteal period) corresponds with AUTUMN. Be sure to slow down. feel yourself and pay attention to you boundaries.
βοΈβοΈ The days with me**es corresponds with WINTER. During those days it will be good for you to withdraw, minimize your workload or if possible not work at all, be quiet, alone and move slowly.
By following the seasons, the cycles you will get a better understanding of yourself, and notice that somtimes you might cross your own boundaries just because the timing is not right.
Speak with a loving voice to yourself. Allow yourself to withdraw and rest when you need it. Allow yourself to sing and dance and express yourself when you feel the power within you is longing for expressing itself.

The latter choice might require an immense amount of courage.
Facing everything is often the last thing we want to do when life gets complicated, scary or otherwise difficult.
But facing the realities of life often gives us the insight(s) that we most need π (but we often don't want to get them right at that moment).
"Why now? Couldn't it come at a more convenient time?"
Honestly - when is more convenient than now? There is NEVER a better time than NOW!!!
So be brave, be curious, be vulnerable and face your fear and rise from it.

"Just because a decision hurts it does not mean that it was the wrong decision"
The decision to heal yourself might hurt.
π The longing for being healed might hurt because you don't think it's possible or because you don't know how to do it.
You have two options NOW:
π 1. You can decide to heal yourself.
π 2. You can decide NOT to heal yourself.
When you have made the decision, notice how it feels in your body. Where can you feel that you have honestly made the decision?
π₯ Do you feel doubt?
π₯ Do you feel fear?
π₯ Do you feel loneliness?
Decide now, that in everything you do for the rest of this day - today - you notice whether you move towards the decision you have made or whether you move away from it.
One decision is no better than the other. One decision is no more right than the other. But one of the decisions feels more true for you than the other.
π Notice it right NOW!
Thoughts can turn up that make you doubt - notice if the thought moves you towards your decision or away from your decision.
A self-critical voice can turn up telling you that you're not able to do it, that you are not doing it in the right way or that you don't have the time for it. Notice where this voice comes from. Is it your own voice? And does it support your decision or does it try to sabotage your decision?
Fatigue can turn up. Feel the fatigue. Is it an old fatige or one that just turned up now that you made that decision? Can you use the fatigue to move you towards your decision?
